1 En el año segundo del reinado de Nabucodonosor, éste tuvo sueños, y se turbó su espíritu y no podía dormir.

2 Mandó llamar el rey a los magos, los encantadores, los hechiceros y a los caldeos , para que le explicaran al rey sus sueños. Vinieron, pues, y se presentaron ante el rey.

3 Y el rey les dijo: He tenido un sueño, y mi espíritu se ha turbado por el deseo de entender el sueño.

4 Y hablaron los caldeos al rey en arameo : ¡Oh rey, vive para siempre! Cuenta el sueño a tus siervos, y nosotros te declararemos la interpretación.

5 El rey respondió y dijo a los caldeos: Mis órdenes son firmes: si no me dais a conocer el sueño y su interpretación, seréis descuartizados y vuestras casas serán reducidas a escombros.

6 Pero si me declaráis el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí regalos, recompensas y grandes honores; por tanto, declaradme el sueño y su interpretación.

7 Respondieron ellos por segunda vez, y dijeron: Refiera el rey su sueño a sus siervos, y declararemos la interpretación.

8 Respondió el rey, y dijo: Ciertamente sé que queréis ganar tiempo, porque veis que mis órdenes son firmes,

9 que si no me declaráis el sueño, hay una sola sentencia para vosotros. Porque os habéis concertado para hablar delante de mí palabras falsas y perversas hasta que cambie la situación. Por tanto, decidme el sueño para que yo sepa que me podéis dar su interpretación.

10 Los caldeos respondieron al rey, y dijeron: No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el asunto al rey, puesto que ningún gran rey o gobernante jamás ha pedido cosa semejante a ningún mago, encantador o caldeo.

11 Lo que el rey demanda es difícil y no hay nadie que lo pueda declarar al rey sino los dioses cuya morada no está entre los hombres.

12 A causa de esto el rey se indignó y se enfureció en gran manera y mandó matar a todos los sabios de Babilonia.

13 Y se publicó el decreto de que mataran a todos los sabios; buscaron también a Daniel y a sus amigos para matarlos.

14 Entonces Daniel habló con discreción y sensatez a Arioc, capitán de la guardia del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia;

15 habló y dijo a Arioc, capitán del rey: ¿Por qué es tan riguroso el decreto del rey? Entonces Arioc informó a Daniel sobre el asunto.

16 Y Daniel fue a pedirle al rey que le diera tiempo para declarar la interpretación al rey.

17 Entonces Daniel fue a su casa e informó el asunto a sus amigos Ananías, Misael y Azarías,

18 para que pidieran misericordia del Dios del cielo acerca de este misterio, a fin de que no perecieran Daniel y sus amigos con el resto de los sabios de Babilonia.

19 Entonces el misterio fue revelado a Daniel en una visión de noche. Daniel entonces bendijo al Dios del cielo.

20 Daniel habló, y dijo: Sea el nombre de Dios bendito por los siglos de los siglos, porque la sabiduría y el poder son de El.

21 El es quien cambia los tiempos y las edades; quita reyes y pone reyes; da sabiduría a los sabios, y conocimiento a los entendidos.

22 El es quien revela lo profundo y lo escondido; conoce lo que está en tinieblas, y la luz mora con El.

23 A ti, Dios de mis padres, doy yo gracias y alabo, porque me has dado sabiduría y poder, y ahora me has revelado lo que te habíamos pedido, pues el asunto del rey nos has dado a conocer.

24 Después fue Daniel adonde estaba Arioc, a quien el rey había designado para dar muerte a los sabios de Babilonia. Fue y le habló así: No des muerte a los sabios de Babilonia; llévame ante el rey, y declararé al rey la interpretación.

25 Entonces Arioc se apresuró a llevar a Daniel ante el rey, y le dijo así: He hallado a un hombre entre los deportados de Judá que dará a conocer al rey la interpretación.

26 El rey respondió, y dijo a Daniel, a quien llamaban Beltsasar: ¿Eres tú capaz de darme a conocer el sueño que he visto y su interpretación?

27 Respondió Daniel ante el rey, y dijo: En cuanto al misterio que el rey quiere saber, no hay sabios, encantadores, magos ni adivinos que puedan declararlo al rey.

28 Pero hay un Dios en el cielo que revela los misterios, y El ha dado a conocer al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá al fin de los días. Tu sueño y las visiones que has tenido en tu cama eran éstos:

29 A ti, oh rey, en tu cama te surgieron pensamientos sobre lo que habrá de suceder en el futuro, y el que revela los misterios te ha dado a conocer lo que sucederá.

30 En cuanto a mí, me ha sido revelado este misterio, no porque yo tenga más sabiduría que cualquier otro viviente, sino con el fin de dar a conocer al rey la interpretación, y para que tú entiendas los pensamientos de tu corazón.

31 Tú, oh rey, tuviste una visión, y he aquí, había una gran estatua; esa estatua era enorme y su brillo extraordinario; estaba en pie delante de ti y su aspecto era terrible.

32 La cabeza de esta estatua era de oro puro, su pecho y sus brazos de plata, y su vientre y sus muslos de bronce,

33 sus piernas de hierro, sus pies en parte de hierro y en parte de barro.

34 Estuviste mirando hasta que una piedra fue cortada sin ayuda de manos, y golpeó la estatua en sus pies de hierro y de barro, y los desmenuzó.

35 Entonces fueron desmenuzados, todos a la vez, el hierro, el barro, el bronce, la plata y el oro; quedaron como el tamo de las eras en verano, y el viento se los llevó sin que quedara rastro alguno de ellos. Y la piedra que había golpeado la estatua se convirtió en un gran monte que llenó toda la tierra.

36 Este es el sueño; ahora diremos ante el rey su interpretación.

37 Tú, oh rey, eres rey de reyes, a quien el Dios del cielo ha dado el reino, el poder, la fuerza y la gloria;

38 y dondequiera que habiten los hijos de los hombres, las bestias del campo o las aves del cielo, El los ha entregado en tu mano y te ha hecho soberano de todos ellos; tú eres la cabeza de oro.

39 Después de ti se levantará otro reino, inferior a ti, y luego un tercer reino, de bronce, que gobernará sobre toda la tierra.

40 Y habrá un cuarto reino, tan fuerte como el hierro; y así como el hierro desmenuza y destroza todas las cosas, como el hierro que tritura, así él desmenuzará y triturará a todos éstos.

41 Y lo que viste, los pies y los dedos, parte de barro de alfarero y parte de hierro, será un reino dividido; pero tendrá la solidez del hierro, ya que viste el hierro mezclado con barro corriente.

42 Y así como los dedos de los pies eran parte de hierro y parte de barro cocido, así parte del reino será fuerte y parte será frágil.

43 En cuanto al hierro mezclado con barro corriente que has visto, se mezclarán mediante simiente humana; pero no se unirán el uno con el otro, como no se mezcla el hierro con el barro.

44 En los días de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo levantará un reino que jamás será destruido, y este reino no será entregado a otro pueblo; desmenuzará y pondrá fin a todos aquellos reinos, y él permanecerá para siempre,

45 tal como viste que una piedra fue cortada del monte sin ayuda de manos y que desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro, la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha hecho saber al rey lo que sucederá en el futuro. Así, pues, el sueño es verdadero y la interpretación fiel.

46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó sobre su rostro, se postró ante Daniel, y ordenó que le ofrecieran presentes e incienso.

47 El rey habló a Daniel, y dijo: En verdad que vuestro Dios es Dios de dioses, Señor de reyes y revelador de misterios, ya que tú has podido revelar este misterio.

48 Entonces el rey engrandeció a Daniel y le dio muchos y espléndidos regalos, y le hizo gobernador sobre toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo sobre todos los sabios de Babilonia.

49 Por solicitud de Daniel, el rey puso sobre la administración de la provincia de Babilonia a Sadrac, Mesac y a Abed-nego, mientras que Daniel quedó en la corte del rey.

The Message Bible MSG

1 In the second year of his reign, King Nebuchadnezzar started having dreams that disturbed him deeply. He couldn't sleep.

2 He called in all the Babylonian magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and fortunetellers to interpret his dreams for him. When they came and lined up before the king,

3 he said to them, "I had a dream that I can't get out of my mind. I can't sleep until I know what it means."

4 The fortunetellers, speaking in the Aramaic language, said, "Long live the king! Tell us the dream and we will interpret it."

5 The king answered the fortunetellers, "This is my decree: If you can't tell me both the dream itself and its interpretation, I'll have you ripped to pieces, limb from limb, and your homes torn down.

6 But if you tell me both the dream and its interpretation, I'll lavish you with gifts and honors. So go to it: Tell me the dream and its interpretation."

7 They answered, "If it please your majesty, tell us the dream. We'll give the interpretation."

8 But the king said, "I know what you're up to - you're just playing for time. You know you're up a tree.

9 You know that if you can't tell me my dream, you're doomed. I see right through you - you're going to cook up some fancy stories and confuse the issue until I change my mind. Nothing doing! First tell me the dream, then I'll know that you're on the up and up with the interpretation and not just blowing smoke in my eyes."

10 The fortunetellers said, "Nobody anywhere can do what you ask. And no king, great or small, has ever demanded anything like this from any magician, enchanter, or fortuneteller.

11 What you're asking is impossible unless some god or goddess should reveal it - and they don't hang around with people like us."

12 That set the king off. He lost his temper and ordered the whole company of Babylonian wise men killed.

13 When the death warrant was issued, Daniel and his companions were included. They also were marked for execution.

14 When Arioch, chief of the royal guards, was making arrangements for the execution, Daniel wisely took him aside

15 and quietly asked what was going on: "Why this all of a sudden?"

16 Daniel went to the king and asked for a little time so that he could interpret the dream.

17 Daniel then went home and told his companions Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what was going on.

18 He asked them to pray to the God of heaven for mercy in solving this mystery so that the four of them wouldn't be killed along with the whole company of Babylonian wise men.

19 That night the answer to the mystery was given to Daniel in a vision. Daniel blessed the God of heaven,

20 saying, "Blessed be the name of God, forever and ever. He knows all, does all:

21 He changes the seasons and guides history, He raises up kings and also brings them down, he provides both intelligence and discernment,

22 He opens up the depths, tells secrets, sees in the dark - light spills out of him!

23 God of all my ancestors, all thanks! all praise! You made me wise and strong. And now you've shown us what we asked for. You've solved the king's mystery."

24 So Daniel went back to Arioch, who had been put in charge of the execution. He said, "Call off the execution! Take me to the king and I'll interpret his dream."

25 Arioch didn't lose a minute. He ran to the king, bringing Daniel with him, and said, "I've found a man from the exiles of Judah who can interpret the king's dream!"

26 The king asked Daniel (renamed in Babylonian, Belteshazzar), "Are you sure you can do this - tell me the dream I had and interpret it for me?"

27 Daniel answered the king, "No mere human can solve the king's mystery, I don't care who it is - no wise man, enchanter, magician, diviner.

28 But there is a God in heaven who solves mysteries, and he has solved this one. He is letting King Nebuchadnezzar in on what is going to happen in the days ahead. This is the dream you had when you were lying on your bed, the vision that filled your mind:

29 "While you were stretched out on your bed, O king, thoughts came to you regarding what is coming in the days ahead. The Revealer of Mysteries showed you what will happen.

30 But the interpretation is given through me, not because I'm any smarter than anyone else in the country, but so that you will know what it means, so that you will understand what you dreamed.

31 "What you saw, O king, was a huge statue standing before you, striking in appearance. And terrifying.

32 The head of the statue was pure gold, the chest and arms were silver, the belly and hips were bronze,

33 the legs were iron, and the feet were an iron-ceramic mixture.

34 While you were looking at this statue, a stone cut out of a mountain by an invisible hand hit the statue, smashing its iron-ceramic feet.

35 Then the whole thing fell to pieces - iron, tile, bronze, silver, and gold, smashed to bits. It was like scraps of old newspapers in a vacant lot in a hot dry summer, blown every which way by the wind, scattered to oblivion. But the stone that hit the statue became a huge mountain, dominating the horizon.

36 This was your dream.

37 You, O king, are the most powerful king on earth. The God of heaven has given you the works: rule, power, strength, and glory.

38 He has put you in charge of men and women, wild animals and birds, all over the world - you're the head ruler, you are the head of gold.

39 But your rule will be taken over by another kingdom, inferior to yours, and that one by a third, a bronze kingdom, but still ruling the whole land,

40 and after that by a fourth kingdom, iron-like in strength. Just as iron smashes things to bits, breaking and pulverizing, it will bust up the previous kingdoms.

41 "But then the feet and toes that ended up as a mixture of ceramic and iron will deteriorate into a mongrel kingdom with some remains of iron in it. Just as the toes of the feet were part ceramic and part iron,

42 it will end up a mixed bag of the breakable and unbreakable.

43 That kingdom won't bond, won't hold together any more than iron and clay hold together.

44 "But throughout the history of these kingdoms, the God of heaven will be building a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will this kingdom ever fall under the domination of another. In the end it will crush the other kingdoms and finish them off and come through it all standing strong and eternal.

45 It will be like the stone cut from the mountain by the invisible hand that crushed the iron, the bronze, the ceramic, the silver, and the gold. "The great God has let the king know what will happen in the years to come. This is an accurate telling of the dream, and the interpretation is also accurate."

46 When Daniel finished, King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face in awe before Daniel. He ordered the offering of sacrifices and burning of incense in Daniel's honor.

47 He said to Daniel, "Your God is beyond question the God of all gods, the Master of all kings. And he solves all mysteries, I know, because you've solved this mystery."

48 Then the king promoted Daniel to a high position in the kingdom, lavished him with gifts, and made him governor over the entire province of Babylon and the chief in charge of all the Babylonian wise men.

49 At Daniel's request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to administrative posts throughout Babylon, while Daniel governed from the royal headquarters.
