1 La escritura en la pared<br />Muchos años después, el rey Belsasar ofreció un gran banquete a mil de sus nobles y bebió vino con ellos.

2 Mientras Belsasar bebía, mandó traer las copas de oro y plata que su antecesor,<br /> Nabucodonosor, había sacado del templo de Jerusalén. Quería beber en ellas con sus nobles, sus esposas y sus concubinas.

3 Así que trajeron las copas de oro sacadas del templo —la casa de Dios en Jerusalén— y el rey y sus nobles, sus esposas y sus concubinas bebieron en ellas.

4 Mientras bebían en las copas, rindieron culto a sus ídolos de oro, plata, bronce, hierro, madera y piedra.

5 De pronto, vieron los dedos de una mano humana que escribía sobre la pared blanqueada del palacio del rey, cerca del candelabro. El propio rey vio la mano mientras escribía

6 y el rostro se le puso pálido del susto. Le temblaron las rodillas a causa del miedo y se le aflojaron las piernas.

7 El rey llamó a gritos que trajeran a los brujos, a los astrólogos<br /> y a los adivinos para que se presentaran ante él. Les dijo a esos sabios babilónicos: «El que pueda leer esta escritura y explicarme lo que significa será vestido con mantos púrpuras, propios de la realeza, y se le pondrá una cadena de oro alrededor del cuello. ¡Será el tercero en importancia en el reino!».

8 Entonces entraron todos los sabios del rey, pero ninguno pudo leer lo que estaba escrito ni decirle al rey lo que significaba.

9 Así que el rey se asustó aún más y se puso pálido. Sus nobles también estaban perturbados.

10 Cuando la reina madre oyó lo que estaba pasando, se dirigió apresuradamente a la sala del banquete y le dijo a Belsasar: «¡Que viva el rey! No se ponga tan pálido ni tenga miedo.

11 Hay un hombre en su reino en quien vive el espíritu de los dioses santos. Durante el reinado de Nabucodonosor, este hombre demostró percepción, entendimiento y sabiduría como la que tienen los dioses. El rey que precedió a usted, o sea su antecesor, el rey Nabucodonosor, lo nombró jefe de todos los magos, los brujos, los astrólogos y los adivinos de Babilonia.

12 Este hombre, Daniel, a quien el rey le dio por nombre Beltsasar, tiene un intelecto excepcional y rebosa de conocimiento y entendimiento divino. Puede interpretar sueños, explicar acertijos y resolver problemas difíciles. Mande llamar a Daniel y él le dirá el significado de lo que está escrito en la pared».

13 Daniel explica la escritura<br />Entonces trajeron a Daniel delante del rey y el rey le preguntó:<br />—¿Eres tú ese Daniel, uno de los cautivos traídos de Judá por mi antecesor, el rey Nabucodonosor?

14 He oído que el espíritu de los dioses vive en ti y que tienes mucha percepción, entendimiento y sabiduría.

15 Mis sabios y brujos han intentado leer las palabras escritas en la pared y explicarme su significado, pero no pueden.

16 Me dicen que tú puedes dar interpretaciones y resolver problemas difíciles. Si eres capaz de leer estas palabras y explicarme el significado, te haré vestir con mantos púrpuras, propios de la realeza, y recibirás una cadena de oro en el cuello. ¡Serás el tercero en importancia en el reino!

17 Daniel respondió al rey:<br />—Su Majestad, guarde sus regalos o déselos a otra persona, igual le diré el significado de lo que está escrito en la pared.

18 El Dios Altísimo le dio soberanía, majestad, gloria y honor a su antecesor, Nabucodonosor.

19 Lo hizo tan poderoso que gente de toda raza, nación y lengua temblaba de temor ante él. El rey mataba a quienes quería matar y perdonaba a quienes quería perdonar; honraba a quienes quería honrar y humillaba a quienes quería humillar.

20 Sin embargo, cuando su corazón y su mente se llenaron de arrogancia, le fue quitado el trono real y se le despojó de su gloria.

21 Fue expulsado de la sociedad humana. Se le dio la mente de un animal salvaje y vivió entre los burros salvajes. Comió pasto como el ganado y lo mojó el rocío del cielo, hasta que reconoció que el Dios Altísimo gobierna los reinos del mundo y designa a quien él quiere para que los gobierne.

22 »Oh Belsasar, usted es el sucesor<br /> del rey y sabía todo esto, pero aun así no se ha humillado.

23 Todo lo contrario, usted desafió con soberbia al Señor del cielo y mandó traer ante usted estas copas que pertenecían al templo. Usted, sus nobles, sus esposas y sus concubinas estuvieron bebiendo vino en estas copas mientras rendían culto a dioses de plata, oro, bronce, hierro, madera y piedra, dioses que no pueden ver ni oír, ni saben absolutamente nada. ¡Pero usted no honró al Dios que le da el aliento de vida y controla su destino!

24 Así que Dios envió esa mano para escribir el mensaje.

25 »Este es el mensaje que se escribió: M<br />, M<br />, T<br /> y P<br />.

26 Y el significado de las palabras es el siguiente:<br /> significa “contado”: Dios ha contado los días de su reinado y le ha puesto fin.

27 significa “pesado”: usted ha sido pesado en la balanza y no dio la medida.

28 significa “dividido”: su reino ha sido dividido y dado a los medos y a los persas.

29 Entonces por orden del rey Belsasar, vistieron a Daniel con mantos púrpuras, le pusieron una cadena de oro en el cuello y lo proclamaron el tercero en importancia en el reino.

30 Esa misma noche mataron<br /> a Belsasar, rey de Babilonia.

31 Y Darío el medo se apoderó del reino a los sesenta y dos años de edad.

1 King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them.

2 While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them.

3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them.

4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote.

6 His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.

7 The king summoned the enchanters, astrologers and diviners. Then he said to these wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”

8 Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.

9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.

10 The queen, hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!” she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale!

11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.

12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar, was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.”

13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?

14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.

15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.

16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”

17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.

19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.

20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory.

21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.

22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this.

23 Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways.

24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

25 “This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN

26 “Here is what these words mean: Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.

27 Tekel : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.

28 Peres : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.

30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain,

31 and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
