1 NELL’anno terzo del regno di Gioiachim, re di Giuda, Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, venne contro a Gerusalemme, e l’assediò.

2 E il Signore diede in man sua Gioiachim, re di Giuda, ed una parte degli arredi della Casa di Dio; ed egli li condusse nel paese di Sinear, nella casa de’ suoi dii; e portò quegli arredi nella casa del tesoro de’ suoi dii.

3 E il re disse ad Aspenaz, capo de’ suoi eunuchi, che, d’infra i figliuoli d’Israele, e del sangue reale, e de’ principi,

4 ne menasse de’ fanciulli, in cui non fosse alcun difetto, belli d’aspetto, e intendenti in ogni sapienza, e saputi in iscienza, e dotati d’avvedimento, e di conoscimento, e prodi della persona, per istare nel palazzo del re; e che s’insegnassero loro le lettere, e la lingua de’ Caldei.

5 E il re assegnò loro una certa provvisione per giorno, delle vivande reali, e del vino del suo bere; e ordinò ancora che si allevassero lo spazio di tre anni, in capo de’ quali stessero davanti al re.

6 Or fra essi furono, de’ figliuoli di Giuda, Daniele, Anania, Misael, ed Azaria.

7 Ma il capo degli eunuchi pose loro altri nomi: a Daniele pose nome Beltsasar; e ad Anania, Sadrac; ed a Misael, Mesac; e ad Azaria, Abed-nego.

8 Or Daniele si mise in cuore di non contaminarsi con le vivande del re, nè col vino del suo bere; e richiese il capo degli eunuchi che gli fosse permesso di non contaminarsi.

9 E Iddio fece trovare a Daniele grazia, e pietà appresso il capo degli eunuchi.

10 Ma il capo degli eunuchi disse a Daniele: Io temo il re, mio signore, il quale ha ordinato il vostro cibo, e le vostre bevande; imperocchè, perchè s’egli vedesse le vostre facce più triste di quelle degli altri fanciulli, pari vostri, vorreste voi rendermi colpevole di fallo capitale inverso il re?

11 Ma Daniele disse al Melsar, il quale il capo degli eunuchi avea costituito sopra Daniele, Anania, Misael, ed Azaria:

12 Deh! fa’ prova dei tuoi servitori lo spazio di dieci giorni; e sienci dati de’ legumi da mangiare, e dell’acqua da bere.

13 E poi sieno riguardate in presenza tua le nostre facce, e quelle de’ fanciulli che mangiano delle vivande reali; e allora fa’ co’ tuoi servitori, come tu avviserai.

14 Ed egli acconsentì loro, e fece prova di essi per dieci giorni.

15 E in capo de’ dieci giorni, le lor facce apparvero più belle, e più piene di carne, che quelle di tutti gli altri fanciulli che mangiavano le vivande reali.

16 Laonde il Melsar da quel dì innanzi prendeva le lor vivande, e il vino del lor bere, e dava lor de’ legumi.

17 E Iddio donò a tutti e quattro quei fanciulli conoscimento, e intendimento in ogni letteratura e sapienza; e rendette Daniele intendente in ogni visione, ed in sogni.

18 E in capo del tempo, che il re avea detto che que’ fanciulli gli fosser menati, il capo degli eunuchi li menò nel cospetto di Nebucadnesar.

19 E il re parlò con loro; ma fra essi tutti non si trovò alcuno simile a Daniele, ad Anania, a Misael, e ad Azaria; ed essi stettero nella presenza del re.

20 E in ogni affare di sapienza, e d’intendimento, del quale il re li domandasse, li trovò sopravanzar per dieci volte tutti i magi, e gli astrologi, ch’erano in tutto il suo regno.

21 E Daniele fu così fino all’anno primo del re Ciro.

1 In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and attacked it.

2 The Lord handed King Jehoiakim of Judah and some utensils from God's temple over to Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar took the utensils to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put them in the temple treasury.

3 The king told Ashpenaz, the chief-of-staff, to bring some of the Israelites, the royal family, and the nobility.

4 They were to be young men who were healthy, good-looking, knowledgeable in all subjects, well-informed, intelligent, and able to serve in the king's palace. They were to be taught the language and literature of the Babylonians.

5 The king arranged for them to get a daily allowance of the king's rich food and wine. They were to be trained for three years. After that, they were to serve the king.

6 Among these young men were some Judeans: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

7 The chief-of-staff gave them [Babylonian] names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar. To Hananiah he gave the name Shadrach. To Mishael he gave the name Meshach. And to Azariah he gave the name Abednego.

8 Daniel made up his mind not to harm himself by eating the king's rich food and drinking the king's wine. So he asked the chief-of-staff for permission not to harm himself in this way.

9 God made the chief-of-staff kind and compassionate toward Daniel.

10 The chief-of-staff told Daniel, "I'm afraid of my master, the king. The king determined what you should eat and drink. If he sees that you look worse than the other young men your age, he would have my head cut off."

11 The chief-of-staff put a supervisor in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Daniel said to the supervisor,

12 "Please test us for ten days. Give us only vegetables to eat and water to drink.

13 Then compare us to the young men who are eating the king's rich food. Decide how to treat us on the basis of how we look."

14 The supervisor listened to them about this matter and tested them for ten days.

15 After ten days they looked healthier and stronger than the young men who had been eating the king's rich food.

16 So the supervisor took away the king's rich food and wine and gave them vegetables.

17 God gave these four men knowledge, wisdom, and the ability to understand all kinds of literature. Daniel could also understand all kinds of visions and dreams.

18 At the end of the three-year training period, the chief-of-staff brought all the young men to Nebuchadnezzar.

19 The king talked to them and found no one like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah among all of them. So these four men served the king.

20 Whenever the king asked them about things that required wisdom and insight, he found that they knew ten times more than all the magicians and psychics in his whole kingdom.

21 Daniel served the royal palace until the first year of King Cyrus [of Persia].
