2 En un caso así, los ancianos y los jueces tendrán que medir la distancia que hay desde el lugar del crimen hasta las ciudades cercanas.

3 Una vez que hayan determinado cuál es la ciudad más cercana, los ancianos de esa ciudad tendrán que elegir una novilla de la manada que nunca haya sido entrenada para el arado ni usado el yugo.

4 La llevarán hasta un valle que no haya sido arado ni cultivado y que tenga un arroyo donde siempre fluye el agua. Allí, en el valle, le quebrarán el cuello al animal.

5 Después se acercarán los sacerdotes levitas, pues el Señor<br /> tu Dios los ha elegido para que sirvan delante de él y pronuncien bendiciones en el nombre del Señor<br />. Ellos son los responsables de resolver todos los casos legales y criminales.

6 »Los ancianos del pueblo tendrán que lavarse las manos sobre la novilla a la cual le quebraron el cuello.

7 Luego dirán: “Nuestras manos no derramaron la sangre de esta persona ni vimos cómo sucedió.

8 Oh Señor<br />, perdona a tu pueblo Israel, al cual has redimido. No culpes a tu pueblo de asesinar a un inocente”. Así quedarán absueltos de la culpa por la sangre de esa persona.

9 Si sigues estas instrucciones, harás lo correcto a los ojos del Señor<br /> y purificarás a tu comunidad de la culpa por homicidio.

10 Matrimonio con una prisionera de guerra<br />»Supongamos que sales a la guerra contra tus enemigos, y el Señor<br /> tu Dios los entrega en tus manos, y tú tomas cautivos a algunos de ellos.

11 Y supongamos que, entre los cautivos, ves a una mujer hermosa a la cual te sientes atraído y deseas casarte con ella.

12 Si tal cosa sucediera, podrás llevarla a tu casa, donde ella tendrá que raparse la cabeza, cortarse las uñas

13 y cambiarse la ropa que llevaba puesta cuando la tomaron prisionera. Ella se quedará en tu casa, pero deberás permitirle hacer duelo por su padre y su madre durante todo un mes. Después de ese tiempo, podrán unirse, y tú serás su marido y ella será tu esposa.

14 Sin embargo, si una vez ya unidos resulta que ella no te agrada, tendrás que dejarla en libertad. No podrás venderla ni tratarla como a una esclava, porque la has humillado.

15 Derechos del primer hijo varón<br />»Supongamos que un hombre tiene dos esposas y solamente ama a una de ellas, pero ambas le han dado hijos varones. Y supongamos que el primer varón lo haya tenido con la mujer que no ama.

16 Cuando el hombre divida su herencia, no dará la mayor parte al hijo menor —el que tuvo con la esposa que ama— como si fuera el primer hijo varón.

17 Deberá reconocer los derechos del hijo mayor —el que tuvo con la esposa que no ama— al darle la parte doble que le corresponde. Ese hijo es el primer fruto del vigor de su padre, y a él le corresponden los derechos del primer hijo varón.

18 Cómo tratar con un hijo rebelde<br />»Supongamos que un hombre tiene un hijo terco y rebelde, que no quiere obedecer ni a su padre ni a su madre, a pesar de que ellos lo disciplinan.

19 En un caso así, el padre y la madre tendrán que llevarlo ante los ancianos mientras estén juzgando en las puertas de la ciudad.

20 Ambos padres les dirán a los ancianos: “Este hijo nuestro es terco y rebelde y se niega a obedecer. Es glotón y borracho”.

21 Entonces todos los hombres de esa ciudad lo matarán a pedradas. De ese modo limpiarás esa maldad que hay en medio de ti, y todo Israel se enterará y tendrá miedo.

22 Ordenanzas varias<br />»Si alguien cometió un delito digno de muerte, y por eso lo ejecutan y luego lo cuelgan de un árbol,

23 el cuerpo no debe quedar allí colgado toda la noche. Habrá que enterrarlo ese mismo día, porque todo el que ha sido colgado<br /> es maldito a los ojos de Dios. De esa manera, evitarás que se contamine la tierra que el Señor<br /> tu Dios te da como preciada posesión.

1 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,

2 your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance from the body to the neighboring towns.

3 Then the elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke

4 and lead it down to a valley that has not been plowed or planted and where there is a flowing stream. There in the valley they are to break the heifer’s neck.

5 The Levitical priests shall step forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to minister and to pronounce blessings in the name of the LORD and to decide all cases of dispute and assault.

6 Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley,

7 and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done.

8 Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, LORD, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent person.” Then the bloodshed will be atoned for,

9 and you will have purged from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

10 When you go to war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives,

11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife.

12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nails

13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife.

14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.

15 If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,

16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.

17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength. The right of the firstborn belongs to him.

18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him,

19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town.

20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.”

21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole,

23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
