1 Or questi sono i comandamenti, le leggi e le prescrizioni che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha ordinato d’insegnarvi, perché li mettiate in pratica nel paese nel quale state per passare per prenderne possesso;

2 affinché tu tema l’Iddio tuo, l’Eterno, osservando, tutti i giorni della tua vita, tu, il tuo figliuolo e il figliuolo del tuo figliuolo, tutte le sue leggi e tutti i suoi comandamenti che io ti do, e affinché i tuoi giorni siano prolungati.

3 Ascolta dunque, Israele, e abbi cura di metterli in pratica, affinché tu sii felice e moltiplichiate grandemente nel paese ove scorre il latte e il miele, come l’Eterno, l’Iddio de’ tuoi padri, ti ha detto.

4 Ascolta, Israele: l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, è l’unico Eterno.

5 Tu amerai dunque l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, con tutto il cuore, con tutta l’anima tua e con tutte le tue forze.

6 E questi comandamenti che oggi ti do ti staranno nel cuore;

7 li inculcherai ai tuoi figliuoli, ne parlerai quando te ne starai seduto in casa tua, quando sarai per via, quando ti coricherai e quando ti alzerai.

8 Te li legherai alla mano come un segnale, ti saranno come frontali tra gli occhi,

9 e li scriverai sugli stipiti della tua casa e sulle tue porte.

10 E quando l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, t’avrà fatto entrare nel paese che giurò ai tuoi padri, Abrahamo, Isacco e Giacobbe, di darti; quando t’avrà menato alle grandi e buone città che tu non hai edificate,

11 alle case piene d’ogni bene che tu non hai riempite, alle cisterne scavate che tu non hai scavate, alle vigne e agli uliveti che tu non hai piantati, e quando mangerai e sarai satollo,

12 guardati dal dimenticare l’Eterno che ti ha tratto dal paese d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù.

13 Temerai l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, lo servirai e giurerai per il suo nome.

14 Non andrete dietro ad altri dèi, fra gli dèi dei popoli che vi staranno attorno,

15 perché l’Iddio tuo, l’Eterno, che sta in mezzo a te, è un Dio geloso; l’ira dell’Eterno, dell’Iddio tuo, s’accenderebbe contro a te e ti sterminerebbe di sulla terra.

16 Non tenterete l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, come lo tentaste a Massa.

17 Osserverete diligentemente i comandamenti dell’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio vostro, le sue istruzioni e le sue leggi che v’ha date.

18 E farai ciò ch’è affinché tu sii felice ed entri in possesso del buon paese che l’Eterno giurò ai tuoi padri di darti,

19 dopo ch’egli avrà tutti i tuoi nemici d’innanzi a te, come l’Eterno ha promesso.

20 Quando, in avvenire, il tuo figliuolo ti domanderà: "Che significano queste istruzioni, queste leggi e queste prescrizioni che l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, vi ha date?"

21 tu risponderai al tuo figliuolo: "Eravamo schiavi di Faraone in Egitto, e l’Eterno ci trasse dall’Egitto con mano potente.

22 E l’Eterno operò sotto i nostri occhi miracoli e prodigi grandi e disastrosi contro l’Egitto, contro Faraone e contro tutta la sua casa.

23 E ci trasse di là per condurci nel paese che avea giurato ai nostri padri di darci.

24 E l’Eterno ci ordinò di mettere in pratica tutte queste leggi, temendo l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, affinché fossimo sempre felici, ed egli ci conservasse in vita, come ha fatto finora.

25 E questa sarà la nostra giustizia: l’aver cura di mettere in pratica tutti questi comandamenti nel cospetto dell’Eterno, dell’Iddio nostro, com’egli ci ha ordinato".

1 Now these are the mitzvot, the chukkim, and the mishpatim, which Hashem Eloheichem commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in ha’aretz whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear Hashem Eloheicha, to be shomer over all His chukkim and His mitzvot, which I command thee, thou, and thy ben, and thy ben’s ben, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Shema therefore, Yisroel, and be shomer to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as Hashem Elohei Avoteicha hath promised thee, in Eretz Zavat Cholov uDevash.

4 Shema Yisroel Adonoi Eloheinu Adonoi Echad.

5 And thou shalt love Hashem Eloheicha b’chol l’vavcha u’vchol nafshcha uvechol modecha.

6 And these devarim, which I command thee today, shall be in thine lev;

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy banim, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine bais, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 And thou shalt bind them for an ot upon thine hand, and they shall be as totafos (ornaments [Shemot 13:16, Shabbos 57a]) between thine eyes.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the mezuzot of thy bais, and on thy she’arim.

10 And it shall be, when Hashem Eloheicha shall have brought thee into ha’aretz He swore unto Avoteicha, to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya’akov, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

11 And batim full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, kramim (vineyards) and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

12 Then beware lest thou forget Hashem, which brought thee forth out of Eretz Mitzrayim, from the bais avadim.

13 Thou shalt fear Hashem Eloheicha, and serve Him, and shalt swear by Shmo.

14 Ye shall not go after elohim acherim, of elohei ha’amim (the g-ds of the peoples) which are round about you;

15 (For Hashem Eloheicha is an El Kannah among you) lest the anger of Hashem Eloheicha be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of ha’adamah.

16 Ye shall not test Hashem Eloheichem, as ye tested Him in Massah.

17 Ye diligently shall be shomer mitzvot over the mitzvot Hashem Eloheichem and His edut, and His chukkim, which He hath commanded thee.

18 And thou shalt do that which is yashar (right, straight) and hatov in the eyes of Hashem; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess ha’aretz hatovah which Hashem swore unto Avotecha.

19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as Hashem hath spoken.

20 And when thy ben asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the edut, and the chukkim, and the mishpatim which Hashem Eloheinu hath commanded you?

21 Then thou shalt say unto thy ben, We were Pharaoh’s avadim in Mitzrayim; and Hashem brought us out of Mitzrayim with a yad chazakah;

22 And Hashem showed otot and mofetim, great and terrible, upon Mitzrayim, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

23 And He brought us out from thence, that He might bring us in, to give us ha’aretz which He promised on oath unto Avoteinu.

24 And Hashem commanded us to do all these chukkim, to fear Hashem Eloheinu, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at yom hazeh.

25 And tzedakah it shall be for us, if we are shomer to do all these mitzvot before Hashem Eloheinu, as He hath commanded us.
