Deuteronomy 12

NCV 1 These are the commands and laws you must carefully obey in the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Obey them as long as you live in the land. NIV 1 These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess—as long as you live in the land. NCV 2 When you inherit the lands of these nations, you must completely destroy all the places where they serve their gods, on high mountains and hills and under every green tree. NIV 2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains, on the hills and under every spreading tree, where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods. NCV 3 Tear down their altars, smash their holy stone pillars, and burn their Asherah idols in the fire. Cut down their idols and destroy their names from those places. NIV 3 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places. NCV 4 Don't worship the Lord your God that way, NIV 4 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way. NCV 5 but look for the place the Lord your God will choose -- a place among your tribes where he is to be worshiped. Go there, NIV 5 But you are to seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. To that place you must go; NCV 6 and bring to that place your burnt offerings and sacrifices; bring a tenth of what you gain and your special gifts; bring what you have promised and the special gifts you want to give the Lord, and bring the first animals born to your herds and flocks. NIV 6 there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, what you have vowed to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks. NCV 7 There you will be together with the Lord your God. There you and your families will eat, and you will enjoy all the good things for which you have worked, because the Lord your God has blessed you. NIV 7 There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you. NCV 8 Do not worship the way we have been doing today, each person doing what he thinks is right. NIV 8 You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit, NCV 9 You have not yet come to a resting place, to the land the Lord your God will give you as your own. NIV 9 since you have not yet reached the resting place and the inheritance the LORD your God is giving you. NCV 10 But soon you will cross the Jordan River to live in the land the Lord your God is giving you as your own, where he will give you rest from all your enemies and you will live in safety. NIV 10 But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. NCV 11 Then the Lord your God will choose a place where he is to be worshiped. To that place you must bring everything I tell you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your offerings of a tenth of what you gain, your special gifts, and all your best things you promised to the Lord. NIV 11 Then to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name—there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the LORD. NCV 12 There rejoice before the Lord your God. Everyone should rejoice: you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns who have no land of their own. NIV 12 And there rejoice before the LORD your God—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns who have no allotment or inheritance of their own. NCV 13 Be careful that you don't sacrifice your burnt offerings just anywhere you please. NIV 13 Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings anywhere you please. NCV 14 Offer them only in the place the Lord will choose. He will choose a place in one of your tribes, and there you must do everything I am commanding you. NIV 14 Offer them only at the place the LORD will choose in one of your tribes, and there observe everything I command you. NCV 15 But you may kill your animals in any of your towns and eat as much of the meat as you want, as if it were a deer or a gazelle; this is the blessing the Lord your God is giving you. Anyone, clean or unclean, may eat this meat, NIV 15 Nevertheless, you may slaughter your animals in any of your towns and eat as much of the meat as you want, as if it were gazelle or deer, according to the blessing the LORD your God gives you. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it. NCV 16 but do not eat the blood. Pour it out on the ground like water. NIV 16 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water. NCV 17 Do not eat in your own towns what belongs to the Lord: one-tenth of your grain, new wine, or oil; the first animals born to your herds or flocks; whatever you have promised to give; the special gifts you want to give to the Lord, or any other gifts. NIV 17 You must not eat in your own towns the tithe of your grain and new wine and olive oil, or the firstborn of your herds and flocks, or whatever you have vowed to give, or your freewill offerings or special gifts. NCV 18 Eat these things when you are together with the Lord your God, in the place the Lord your God chooses to be worshiped. Everyone must do this: you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns. Rejoice in the Lord your God's presence about the things you have worked for. NIV 18 Instead, you are to eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God will choose—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns—and you are to rejoice before the LORD your God in everything you put your hand to. NCV 19 Be careful not to forget the Levites as long as you live in the land. NIV 19 Be careful not to neglect the Levites as long as you live in your land. NCV 20 When the Lord your God enlarges your country as he has promised, and you want some meat so you say, "I want some meat," you may eat as much meat as you want. NIV 20 When the LORD your God has enlarged your territory as he promised you, and you crave meat and say, “I would like some meat,” then you may eat as much of it as you want. NCV 21 If the Lord your God chooses a place where he is to be worshiped that is too far away from you, you may kill animals from your herds and flocks, which the Lord has given to you. I have commanded that you may do this. You may eat as much of them as you want in your own towns, NIV 21 If the place where the LORD your God chooses to put his Name is too far away from you, you may slaughter animals from the herds and flocks the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you, and in your own towns you may eat as much of them as you want. NCV 22 as you would eat gazelle or deer meat. Both clean and unclean people may eat this meat, NIV 22 Eat them as you would gazelle or deer. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat. NCV 23 but be sure you don't eat the blood, because the life is in the blood. Don't eat the life with the meat. NIV 23 But be sure you do not eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat. NCV 24 Don't eat the blood, but pour it out on the ground like water. NIV 24 You must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water. NCV 25 If you don't eat it, things will go well for you and your children, because you will be doing what the Lord says is right. NIV 25 Do not eat it, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD. NCV 26 Take your holy things and the things you have promised to give, and go to the place the Lord will choose. NIV 26 But take your consecrated things and whatever you have vowed to give, and go to the place the LORD will choose. NCV 27 Present your burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord your God, both the meat and the blood. The blood of your sacrifices should be poured beside the altar of the Lord your God, but you may eat the meat. NIV 27 Present your burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD your God, both the meat and the blood. The blood of your sacrifices must be poured beside the altar of the LORD your God, but you may eat the meat. NCV 28 Be careful to obey all the rules I am giving you so that things will always go well for you and your children, and you will be doing what the Lord your God says is good and right. NIV 28 Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God. NCV 29 You will enter the land and take it away from the nations that the Lord your God will destroy ahead of you. When you force them out and live in their land, NIV 29 The LORD your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land, NCV 30 they will be destroyed for you, but be careful not to be trapped by asking about their gods. Don't say, "How do these nations worship? I will do the same." NIV 30 and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.” NCV 31 Don't worship the Lord your God that way, because the Lord hates the evil ways they worship their gods. They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods! NIV 31 You must not worship the LORD your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the LORD hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods. NCV 32 Be sure to do everything I have commanded you. Do not add anything to it, and do not take anything away from it. NIV 32 See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.
