Deuteronomy 14

CJB

GW

1 "You are the people of ADONAI your God. You are not to gash yourselves or shave the hair above your foreheads in mourning for the dead,
1 You are the children of the LORD your God. So when someone dies, don't [mourn] by cutting yourselves or shaving bald spots on your head.
2 because you are a people set apart as holy for ADONAI your God. ADONAI your God has chosen you to be his own unique treasure out of all the peoples on the face of the earth.
2 You are people who are holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the people who live on earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his own special possession.

6 You may eat all animals that have completely divided hoofs and that also chew their cud.
7 But you are not to eat those that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof. For example, the camel, the hare and the coney are unclean for you because they chew the cud but don't have a separate hoof;
7 But some animals chew their cud, while others have completely divided hoofs. You may not eat these [kinds of] animals. They include camels, rabbits, and rock badgers. (Although they chew their cud, they don't have divided hoofs. They are unclean for you.)
8 while the pig is unclean for you because, although it has a separate hoof, it doesn't chew the cud. You are not to eat meat from these or touch their carcasses.
8 Also, you may not eat pigs. (Although their hoofs are divided, they don't chew their cud.) Never eat their meat or touch their dead bodies.

11 You may eat any clean bird.
12 but these you are not to eat: eagles, vultures, ospreys,
12 But here are the birds that you should never eat: eagles, bearded vultures, black vultures,
13 kites, any kind of buzzard,
13 buzzards, all types of kites,
14 any kind of raven,
14 all types of crows,
15 ostriches, screech-owls, seagulls, any kind of hawk,

21 "You are not to eat any animal that dies naturally; although you may let a stranger staying with you eat it, or sell it to a foreigner; because you are a holy people for ADONAI your God. "You are not to boil a young animal in its mother's milk.
21 Never eat any creature that dies naturally. You may give it to the foreigners who live in your cities, and they may eat it. You may also sell it to foreigners who are visiting. But you are people who are holy to the LORD your God. Never cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
22 "Every year you must take one tenth of everything your seed produces in the field,
22 Every year be sure to save a tenth of the crops harvested from whatever you plant in your fields.
23 and eat it in the presence of ADONAI your God. In the place where he chooses to have his name live you will eat the tenth of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your cattle and sheep, so that you will learn to fear ADONAI your God always.
23 Eat the tenth of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, and eat the firstborn of your cattle, sheep, and goats in the presence of the LORD your God in the place he will choose to put his name. Then you will learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live.
24 But if the distance is too great for you, so that you are unable to transport it, because the place where ADONAI chooses to put his name is too far away from you; then, when ADONAI your God prospers you,
24 But the place the LORD your God will choose to put his name may be too far away. He may bless you with so much that you can't carry a tenth of your income that far.
25 you are to convert it into money, take the money with you, go to the place which ADONAI your God will choose,
25 If so, exchange the tenth part of your income for silver. Take the silver with you, and go to the place the LORD your God will choose.
26 and exchange the money for anything you want - cattle, sheep, wine, other intoxicating liquor, or anything you please - and you are to eat there in the presence of ADONAI your God, and enjoy yourselves, you and your household.
26 Use the silver to buy whatever you want: cattle, sheep, goats, wine, liquor--whatever you choose. Then you and your family will eat and enjoy yourselves there in the presence of the LORD your God.
27 "But don't neglect the Levi staying with you, because he has no share or inheritance like yours.
27 Never forget to take care of the Levites who live in your cities. They have no land of their own as you have.
28 At the end of every three years you are to take all the tenths of your produce from that year and store it in your towns.
28 At the end of every third year bring a tenth of that year's crop, and store it in your cities.
29 Then the Levi, because he has no share or inheritance like yours, along with the foreigner, the orphan and the widow living in your towns, will come, eat and be satisfied - so that ADONAI your God will bless you in everything your hands produce.
29 Foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in your cities may come to eat all they want. The Levites may also come because they have no land of their own as you have. Then the LORD your God will bless you in whatever work you do.
