New Century Version NCV
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 The priests are from the tribe of Levi, and that tribe will not receive a share of the land with the Israelites. They will eat the offerings made to the Lord by fire, which is their share.
1
The cohanim, who are L'vi'im, and indeed the whole tribe of Levi, is not to have a share or an inheritance with Isra'el. Instead, their support will come from the food offered by fire to ADONAI and from whatever else becomes his.
2 They will not inherit any of the land like their brothers, but they will inherit the Lord himself, as he has promised them.
2
They will have no inheritance with their brothers, because ADONAI is their inheritance - as he has said to them.
3 When you offer a bull or sheep as a sacrifice, you must share with the priests, giving them the shoulder, the cheeks, and the inner organs.
3
"The cohanim will have the right to receive from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether ox or sheep, the shoulder, the jowls and the stomach.
4 Give them the first of your grain, new wine, and oil, as well as the first wool you cut from your sheep.
4
You will also give him the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep.
5 The Lord your God has chosen the priests and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and serve the Lord always.
5
For ADONAI your God has chosen him from all your tribes to stand and serve in the name of ADONAI, him and his sons forever.
6 If a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he lives and comes to the place the Lord will choose, because he wants to serve the Lord there,
6
"If a Levi from one of your towns anywhere in Isra'el where he is living comes, highly motivated, to the place which ADONAI will choose,
7 he may serve the Lord his God. He will be like his fellow Levites who serve there before the Lord.
7
then he will serve there in the name of ADONAI his God, just like his kinsmen the L'vi'im who stand and serve in the presence of ADONAI.
8 They all will have an equal share of the food. That is separate from what he has received from the sale of family possessions.
8
Such a Levi will receive the same share as they do, in addition to what he may receive from selling his inherited ancestral property.
9 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, don't learn to do the hateful things the other nations do.
9
"When you enter the land ADONAI your God is giving you, you are not to learn how to follow the abominable practices of those nations.
10 Don't let anyone among you offer a son or daughter as a sacrifice in the fire. Don't let anyone use magic or witchcraft, or try to explain the meaning of signs.
10
There must not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through fire, a diviner, a soothsayer, an enchanter, a sorcerer,
11 Don't let anyone try to control others with magic, and don't let them be mediums or try to talk with the spirits of dead people.
11
a spell-caster, a consulter of ghosts or spirits, or a necromancer.
12 The Lord hates anyone who does these things. Because the other nations do these things, the Lord your God will force them out of the land ahead of you.
12
For whoever does these things is detestable to ADONAI, and because of these abominations ADONAI your God is driving them out ahead of you.
13 But you must be innocent in the presence of the Lord your God.
13
You must be wholehearted with ADONAI your God.
14 The nations you will force out listen to people who use magic and witchcraft, but the Lord your God will not let you do those things.
14
For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to soothsayers and diviners; but you, ADONAI your God does not allow you to do this.
15 The Lord your God will give you a prophet like me, who is one of your own people. Listen to him.
15
"ADONAI will raise up for you a prophet like me from among yourselves, from your own kinsmen. You are to pay attention to him,
16 This is what you asked the Lord your God to do when you were gathered at Mount Sinai. You said, "Don't make us listen to the voice of the Lord our God again, and don't make us look at this terrible fire anymore, or we will die."
16
just as when you were assembled at Horev and requested ADONAI your God, 'Don't let me hear the voice of ADONAI my God any more, or let me see this great fire ever again; if I do, I will die!'
17 So the Lord said to me, "What they have said is good.
17
On that occasion ADONAI said to me, 'They are right in what they are saying.
18 So I will give them a prophet like you, who is one of their own people. I will tell him what to say, and he will tell them everything I command.
18
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I order him.
19 This prophet will speak for me; anyone who does not listen when he speaks will answer to me.
19
Whoever doesn't listen to my words, which he will speak in my name, will have to account for himself to me.
20 But if a prophet says something I did not tell him to say as though he were speaking for me, or if a prophet speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must be killed."
20
"'But if a prophet presumptuously speaks a word in my name which I didn't order him to say, or if he speaks in the name of other gods, then that prophet must die.'
21 You might be thinking, "How can we know if a message is not from the Lord?"
21
You may be wondering, 'How are we to know if a word has not been spoken by ADONAI?'
22 If what a prophet says in the name of the Lord does not happen, it is not the Lord's message. That prophet was speaking his own ideas. Don't be afraid of him.
22
When a prophet speaks in the name of ADONAI, and the prediction does not come true -that is, the word is not fulfilled -then ADONAI did not speak that word. The prophet who said it spoke presumptuously; you have nothing to fear from him.
