Deuteronomy 20

HNV 1 When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Mitzrayim. NIV 1 When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. HNV 2 It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the Kohen shall approach and speak to the people, NIV 2 When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. HNV 3 and shall tell them, Hear, Yisra'el, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don't let your heart faint; don't be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; NIV 3 He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. HNV 4 for the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. NIV 4 For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” HNV 5 The officers shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. NIV 5 The officers shall say to the army: “Has anyone built a new house and not yet begun to live in it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may begin to live in it. HNV 6 What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used the fruit of it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit of it. NIV 6 Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it. HNV 7 What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. NIV 7 Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.” HNV 8 The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return to his house, lest his brother's heart melt as his heart. NIV 8 Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.” HNV 9 It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people. NIV 9 When the officers have finished speaking to the army, they shall appoint commanders over it. HNV 10 When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim shalom to it. NIV 10 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace. HNV 11 It shall be, if it make you answer of shalom, and open to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you. NIV 11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you. HNV 12 If it will make no shalom with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it: NIV 12 If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. HNV 13 and when the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword: NIV 13 When the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. HNV 14 but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil of it, shall you take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God has given you. NIV 14 As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. HNV 15 Thus shall you do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. NIV 15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby. HNV 16 But of the cities of these peoples, that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes; NIV 16 However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. HNV 17 but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amori, the Kana`ani, and the Perizzi, the Hivvi, and the Yevusi; as the LORD your God has commanded you; NIV 17 Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you. HNV 18 that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against the LORD your God. NIV 18 Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the LORD your God. HNV 19 When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees of it by wielding an ax against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you? NIV 19 When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can eat their fruit. Do not cut them down. Are the trees people, that you should besiege them? HNV 20 Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall. NIV 20 However, you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build siege works until the city at war with you falls.
