Deuteronomy 22

KJV 1 Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother. NIV 1 If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. KJV 2 And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again. NIV 2 If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. KJV 3 In like manner shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his raiment; and with all lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide thyself. NIV 3 Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it. KJV 4 Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. NIV 4 If you see your fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet. KJV 5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. NIV 5 A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this. KJV 6 If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young: NIV 6 If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young. KJV 7 But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days. NIV 7 You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life. KJV 8 When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence. NIV 8 When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof. KJV 9 Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of thy vineyard, be defiled. NIV 9 Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled. KJV 10 Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. NIV 10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together. KJV 11 Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together. NIV 11 Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together. KJV 12 Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself. NIV 12 Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear. KJV 13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, NIV 13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her KJV 14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: NIV 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” KJV 15 Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate: NIV 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. KJV 16 And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; NIV 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. KJV 17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. NIV 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, KJV 18 And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; NIV 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. KJV 19 And they shall amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. NIV 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives. KJV 20 But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: NIV 20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, KJV 21 Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. NIV 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you. KJV 22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. NIV 22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. KJV 23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; NIV 23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, KJV 24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you. NIV 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you. KJV 25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die: NIV 25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. KJV 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter: NIV 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, KJV 27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her. NIV 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her. KJV 28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; NIV 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, KJV 29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days. NIV 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. KJV 30 A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt. NIV 30 A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.
