Deuteronomy 24

CJB

GW

1 "Suppose a man marries a woman and consummates the marriage but later finds her displeasing, because he has found her offensive in some respect. He writes her a divorce document, gives it to her and sends her away from his house.
1 This is what you must do if a husband writes out a certificate of divorce, gives it to his wife, and makes her leave his house. (He divorced her because he found out something indecent about her and she no longer pleased him.)
2 She leaves his house, goes and becomes another man's wife;
2 She might marry another man after she leaves his house.
3 but the second husband dislikes her and writes her a get, gives it to her and sends her away from his house; or the second husband whom she married dies.
3 If her second husband doesn't love her and divorces her, or if he dies,
4 In such a case her first husband, who sent her away, may not take her again as his wife, because she is now defiled. It would be detestable to ADONAI, and you are not to bring about sin in the land ADONAI your God is giving you as your inheritance.
4 her first husband is not allowed to marry her again. She has become unclean. This would be disgusting in the LORD's presence. Don't pollute with sin the land that the LORD your God is giving you as your property.
5 "If a man has recently married his wife, he is not to be subject to military service; he is to be free of external obligations and left at home for one year to make his new wife happy.
5 A man who has recently been married will be free from military duty or any other public service. For one year he is free to stay at home and make his new wife happy.
6 "No one may take a mill or even an upper millstone as collateral for a loan, because that would be taking as collateral the debtor's very means of sustenance.
6 Never let a family's handmill for grinding flour--or even part of a handmill--be taken to guarantee a loan. The family wouldn't be able to prepare food in order to stay alive.
7 "If a man kidnaps any of his brothers, fellow members of the community of Isra'el, and makes him his slave or sells him, that kidnapper must die; in this way you will put an end to such wickedness among you.
7 Whoever kidnaps another Israelite must die. The kidnapper must die, whether he treated the other person like a slave or sold him. You must get rid of this evil.
8 "When there is an outbreak of tzara'at, be careful to observe and do just what the cohanim, who are L'vi'im, teach you. Take care to do as I ordered them.
8 Guard against outbreaks of serious skin diseases. Be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical priests instruct you. Make sure you do what I commanded them.
9 Remember what ADONAI your God did to Miryam on the road after you left Egypt.
9 Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on your trip from Egypt.
10 "When you make any kind of loan to your neighbor, you are not to enter his house to take his collateral.
10 When you make a loan to your neighbor, don't go into his house to take a security deposit.
11 You must stand outside, and the borrower will bring the collateral outside to you.
11 Wait outside, and the person to whom you're making the loan will bring the deposit out to you.
12 If he is poor, you are not to go to bed with what he gave as collateral in your possession;
12 If the person is poor, don't keep the coat you took as a deposit overnight.
13 rather, you must restore the pledged item at sunset; then he will go to sleep wearing his garment and bless you. This will be an upright deed of yours before ADONAI your God.
13 Make sure you bring it back to him at sunset. When he wears his coat to bed [that night], he'll bless you. You will have done the right thing in the presence of the LORD your God.
14 "You are not to exploit a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or a foreigner living in your land in your town.
14 Don't withhold pay from hired workers who are poor and needy, whether they are Israelites or foreigners living in one of your cities.
15 You are to pay him his wages the day he earns them, before sunset; for he is poor and looks forward to being paid. Otherwise he will cry out against you to ADONAI, and it will be your sin.
15 Pay them each day before sunset because they are poor and need their pay. Otherwise, they will complain to the LORD about you, and you will be condemned for your sin.
16 "Fathers are not to be executed for the children, nor are children to be executed for the fathers; every person will be executed for his own sin.
16 Parents must never be put to death for the crimes of their children, and children must never be put to death for the crimes of their parents. Each person must be put to death for his own crime.
17 "You are not to deprive the foreigner or the orphan of the justice which is his due, and you are not to take a widow's clothing as collateral for a loan.
17 Never deprive foreigners and orphans of justice. And never take widows' clothes to guarantee a loan.
18 Rather, remember that you were a slave in Egypt; and ADONAI your God redeemed you from there. That is why I am ordering you to do this.
18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God freed you from slavery. So I'm commanding you to do this.
19 "When harvesting the grain in your field, if you forgot a sheaf of grain there, you are not to go back and get it; it will remain there for the foreigner, the orphan and the widow, so that ADONAI your God will bless you in all the work you do.
19 This is what you must do when you're harvesting wheat in your field. If you forget to bring in one of the bundles of wheat, don't go back to get it. Leave it there for foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in everything you do.
20 When you beat your olive tree, you are not to go back over the branches again; the olives that are left will be for the foreigner, the orphan and the widow.
20 When you harvest olives from your trees, never knock down all of them. Leave some for foreigners, orphans, and widows.
21 When you gather the grapes from your vineyard, you are not to return and pick grapes a second time; what is left will be for the foreigner, the orphan and the widow.
21 When you pick the grapes in your vineyard, don't pick all of them. Leave some for foreigners, orphans, and widows.
22 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. That is why I am ordering you to do this.
22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. So I'm commanding you to do this.
