GOD'S WORD Translation GW
1 "Now this is the mitzvah, the laws and rulings which ADONAI your God ordered me to teach you for you to obey in the land you are crossing over to possess,
1
These are the commands, laws, and rules the LORD your God commanded me to teach you. Obey them after you enter the land and take possession of it.
2 so that you will fear ADONAI your God and observe all his regulations and mitzvot that I am giving you - you, your child and your grandchild - as long as you live, and so that you will have long life.
2
As long as you live, you, your children, and your grandchildren must fear the LORD your God. All of you must obey all his laws and commands that I'm giving you, and you will live a long time.
3 Therefore listen, Isra'el, and take care to obey, so that things will go well with you, and so that you will increase greatly, as ADONAI, the God of your ancestors, promised you by giving you a land flowing with milk and honey.
3
Listen, Israel, and be careful to obey these laws. Then things will go well for you and your population will increase in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD God of your ancestors promised you.
4 "Sh'ma, Yisra'el! ADONAI Eloheinu, ADONAI echad [Hear, Isra'el! ADONAI our God, ADONAI is one];
4
Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God. The LORD is the only God.
5 and you are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources.
5
Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart;
6
Take to heart these words that I give you today.
7 and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
7
Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you're at home or away, when you lie down or get up.
8 Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead,
8
[Write them down, and] tie them around your wrist, and wear them as headbands as a reminder.
9 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.
9
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
10 "When ADONAI your God has brought you into the land he swore to your ancestors Avraham, Yitz'chak and Ya'akov that he would give you - cities great and prosperous, which you didn't build;
10
The LORD your God will bring you into the land and give it to you, as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This land will have large, prosperous cities that you didn't build.
11 houses full of all sorts of good things, which you didn't fill; water cisterns dug out, which you didn't dig; vineyards and olive trees, which you didn't plant - and you have eaten your fill;
11
Your houses will be filled with all kinds of things that you didn't put there. You will have cisterns that you didn't dig and vineyards and olive trees that you didn't plant. After you have eaten all that you want,
12 then be careful not to forget ADONAI, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you lived as slaves.
12
be careful that you don't forget the LORD, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.
13 You are to fear ADONAI your God, serve him and swear by his name.
13
You must fear the LORD your God, serve him, and take your oaths only in his name.
14 You are not to follow other gods, chosen from the gods of the peoples around you;
14
Never worship any of the gods worshiped by the people around you.
15 because ADONAI, your God, who is here with you, is a jealous God. If you do, the anger of ADONAI your God will flare up against you and he will destroy you from the face of the earth.
15
If you do, the LORD your God will become very angry with you and will wipe you off the face of the earth, because the LORD your God, who is with you, is a God who does not tolerate rivals.
16 Do not put ADONAI your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah [testing].
16
Never test the LORD your God as you did at Massah.
17 Observe diligently the mitzvot of ADONAI your God, and his instructions and laws which he has given you.
17
Be sure to obey the commands of the LORD your God and the regulations and laws he has given you.
18 You are to do what is right and good in the sight of ADONAI, so that things will go well with you, and you will enter and possess the good land ADONAI swore to your ancestors,
18
Do what the LORD considers right and good. Then things will go well for you, and you will enter and take possession of that good land which the LORD promised to your ancestors with an oath.
19 expelling all your enemies ahead of you, as ADONAI said.
19
You will see the LORD expel your enemies as he said he would.
20 "Some day your child will ask you, 'What is the meaning of the instructions, laws and rulings which ADONAI our God has laid down for you?'
20
In the future your children will ask you, "What do these regulations, laws, and rules which the LORD our God commanded you mean to you?"
21 Then you will tell your child, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and ADONAI brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand.
21
Tell them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD used his mighty hand to bring us out of there.
22 ADONAI worked great and terrible signs and wonders against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household, before our very eyes.
22
Right before our eyes the LORD did miraculous signs and amazing things that were spectacular but terrible for Egypt, Pharaoh, and his whole family.
23 He brought us out from there in order to bring us to the land he had sworn to our ancestors that he would give us.
23
The LORD led us out of there to bring us here and give us this land he promised to our ancestors with an oath.
24 ADONAI ordered us to observe all these laws, to fear ADONAI our God, always for our own good, so that he might keep us alive, as we are today.
24
The LORD our God commanded us to obey all these laws and to fear him. These laws are for our own good as long as we live so that he will preserve our lives. It's still true today.
25 It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to obey all these mitzvot before ADONAI our God, just as he ordered us to do.'"
25
This is how we'll have the LORD's approval: If we faithfully obey all these laws in the presence of the LORD our God, as he has commanded us."
