Deuteronomy 6

GNTA

NIV

1 "These are all the laws that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you. Obey them in the land that you are about to enter and occupy.
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
2 As long as you live, you and your descendants are to honor the Lord your God and obey all his laws that I am giving you, so that you may live in that land a long time.
2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
3 Listen to them, people of Israel, and obey them! Then all will go well with you, and you will become a mighty nation and live in that rich and fertile land, just as the Lord, the God of our ancestors, has promised.
3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
4 "Israel, remember this! The Lord - and the Lord alone - is our God.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
6 Never forget these commands that I am giving you today.
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
7 Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.
7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8 Tie them on your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder.
8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
10 "Just as the Lord your God promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he will give you a land with large and prosperous cities which you did not build.
10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,
11 The houses will be full of good things which you did not put in them, and there will be wells that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant. When the Lord brings you into this land and you have all you want to eat,
11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,
12 make certain that you do not forget the Lord who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves.
12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
13 Honor the Lord your God, worship only him, and make your promises in his name alone.
13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.
14 Do not worship other gods, any of the gods of the peoples around you.
14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you;
15 If you do worship other gods, the Lord's anger will come against you like fire and will destroy you completely, because the Lord your God, who is present with you, tolerates no rivals.
15 for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.
16 "Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you did at Massah.
16 Do not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah.
17 Be sure that you obey all the laws that he has given you.
17 Be sure to keep the commands of the LORD your God and the stipulations and decrees he has given you.
18 Do what the Lord says is right and good, and all will go well with you. You will be able to take possession of the fertile land that the Lord promised your ancestors,
18 Do what is right and good in the LORD’s sight, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors,
19 and you will drive out your enemies, as he promised.
19 thrusting out all your enemies before you, as the LORD said.
20 "In times to come your children will ask you, "Why did the Lord our God command us to obey all these laws?'
20 In the future, when your son asks you, “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?”
21 Then tell them, "We were slaves of the king of Egypt, and the Lord rescued us by his great power.
21 tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
22 With our own eyes we saw him work miracles and do terrifying things to the Egyptians and to their king and to all his officials.
22 Before our eyes the LORD sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household.
23 He freed us from Egypt to bring us here and give us this land, as he had promised our ancestors he would.
23 But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors.
24 Then the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these laws and to honor him. If we do, he will always watch over our nation and keep it prosperous.
24 The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.
25 If we faithfully obey everything that God has commanded us, he will be pleased with us.'
25 And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.”
