Deuteronomy 8

GNT 1 "Obey faithfully all the laws that I have given you today, so that you may live, increase in number, and occupy the land that the Lord promised to your ancestors. NIV 1 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors. GNT 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you on this long journey through the desert these past forty years, sending hardships to test you, so that he might know what you intended to do and whether you would obey his commands. NIV 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. GNT 3 He made you go hungry, and then he gave you manna to eat, food that you and your ancestors had never eaten before. He did this to teach you that you must not depend on bread alone to sustain you, but on everything that the Lord says. NIV 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. GNT 4 During these forty years your clothes have not worn out, nor have your feet swollen up. NIV 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. GNT 5 Remember that the Lord your God corrects and punishes you just as parents discipline their children. NIV 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. GNT 6 So then, do as the Lord has commanded you: live according to his laws and obey him. NIV 6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. GNT 7 The Lord your God is bringing you into a fertile land - a land that has rivers and springs, and underground streams gushing out into the valleys and hills; NIV 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; GNT 8 a land that produces wheat and barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and honey. NIV 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; GNT 9 There you will never go hungry or ever be in need. Its rocks have iron in them, and from its hills you can mine copper. NIV 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills. GNT 10 You will have all you want to eat, and you will give thanks to the Lord your God for the fertile land that he has given you. NIV 10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. GNT 11 "Make certain that you do not forget the Lord your God; do not fail to obey any of his laws that I am giving you today. NIV 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. GNT 12 When you have all you want to eat and have built good houses to live in NIV 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, GNT 13 and when your cattle and sheep, your silver and gold, and all your other possessions have increased, NIV 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, GNT 14 be sure that you do not become proud and forget the Lord your God who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves. NIV 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. GNT 15 He led you through that vast and terrifying desert where there were poisonous snakes and scorpions. In that dry and waterless land he made water flow out of solid rock for you. NIV 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. GNT 16 In the desert he gave you manna to eat, food that your ancestors had never eaten. He sent hardships on you to test you, so that in the end he could bless you with good things. NIV 16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. GNT 17 So then, you must never think that you have made yourselves wealthy by your own power and strength. NIV 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” GNT 18 Remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the power to become rich. He does this because he is still faithful today to the covenant that he made with your ancestors. NIV 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. GNT 19 Never forget the Lord your God or turn to other gods to worship and serve them. If you do, then I warn you today that you will certainly be destroyed. NIV 19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. GNT 20 If you do not obey the Lord, then you will be destroyed just like those nations that he is going to destroy as you advance. NIV 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
