1 Le parole del Predicatore, figliuolo di Davide, re in Gerusalemme.

2 VANITÀ delle vanità, dice il Predicatore; vanità delle vanità; ogni cosa è vanità.

3 Che profitto ha l’uomo di tutta la sua fatica nella quale egli si affatica sotto il sole?

4 Una età va via, un’altra età viene; e la terra resta in perpetuo.

5 Il sole si leva anch’esso, e poi tramonta; e, ansando, trae verso il luogo suo, ove egli si deve levare.

6 Il vento trae verso il Mezzodì, e poi gira verso il Settentrione; egli va sempre girando, e ritorna a’ suoi giri.

7 Tutti i fiumi corrono nel mare, e il mare non s’empie; i fiumi ritornano sempre a correre al luogo dove sogliono correre.

8 Ogni cosa si affatica più che l’uomo non può dire; l’occhio non si sazia giammai di vedere, e l’orecchio non si riempie di udire.

9 Quello che è stato è lo stesso che sarà; e quello che è stato fatto è lo stesso che si farà; e non vi è nulla di nuovo sotto il sole.

10 Evvi cosa alcuna, della quale altri possa dire: Vedi questo, egli è nuovo? già è stato ne’ secoli che sono stati avanti a noi.

11 Non vi è alcuna memoria delle cose che sono state innanzi; così ancora non vi sarà memoria delle cose che saranno nel tempo a venire, fra coloro che verranno appresso.

12 Io, il Predicatore, sono stato re sopra Israele, in Gerusalemme;

13 ed ho recato il mio cuore a ricercare, e ad investigare, con sapienza, tutto ciò che si fa sotto il cielo; il che è una occupazione molesta, la quale Iddio ha data a’ figliuoli degli uomini, per occuparvisi.

14 Io ho vedute tutte le cose che si fanno sotto il sole; ed ecco, tutto ciò è vanità, e tormento di spirito.

15 Le cose torte non si possono dirizzare; e i difetti non si possono annoverare.

16 Io parlava nel cuor mio, dicendo: Ecco, io mi sono aggrandito, ed accresciuto in sapienza, più che tutti quelli che sono stati innanzi a me sopra Gerusalemme; e il cuor mio ha veduta molta sapienza e scienza;

17 ed ho recato il mio cuore a conoscere la sapienza; ed anche a conoscere le pazzie e la stoltizia; ed ho riconosciuto che questo ancora è un tormento di spirito.

18 Perciocchè, dove è molta sapienza, vi è molta molestia; e chi accresce la scienza accresce il dolore.

1 The words of the spokesman, the son of David and the king in Jerusalem.

2 "Absolutely pointless!" says the spokesman. "Absolutely pointless! Everything is pointless."

3 What do people gain from all their hard work under the sun?

4 Generations come, and generations go, but the earth lasts forever.

5 The sun rises, and the sun sets, and then it rushes back to the place where it will rise [again].

6 The wind blows toward the south and shifts toward the north. Round and round it blows. It blows in a full circle.

7 All streams flow into the sea, but the sea is never full. The water goes back to the place where the streams began in order to [start] flowing again.

8 All of these sayings are worn-out phrases. They are more than anyone can express, comprehend, or understand.

9 Whatever has happened before will happen [again]. Whatever has been done before will be done [again]. There is nothing new under the sun.

10 Can you say that anything is new? It has already been here long before us.

11 Nothing from the past is remembered. Even in the future, nothing will be remembered by those who come after us.

12 I, the spokesman, have been king of Israel in Jerusalem.

13 With all my heart I used wisdom to study and explore everything done under heaven. Mortals are weighed down with a terrible burden that God has placed on them.

14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun. Look at it! It's all pointless. [It's like] trying to catch the wind.

15 No one can straighten what is bent. No one can count what is not there.

16 I thought to myself, "I have grown wiser than anyone who [has ruled] Jerusalem before me. I've had a lot of experience with wisdom and knowledge."

17 I've used my mind to understand wisdom and knowledge as well as madness and stupidity. [Now] I know that this is [like] trying to catch the wind.

18 With a lot of wisdom [comes] a lot of heartache. The greater [your] knowledge, the greater [your] pain.
