1 IO ho detto nel cuor mio: Va’ ora, io ti proverò con allegrezza, e tu goderai del bene; ma ecco, questo ancora è vanità.

2 Io ho detto al riso: Tu sei insensato; ed all’allegrezza: Che cosa è quel che tu fai?

3 Io ho nel mio cuore ricercato il modo di passar dolcemente la vita mia in continui conviti; e, reggendo il mio cuore con sapienza, di attenermi a stoltizia; finchè vedessi che cosa fosse bene a’ figliuoli degli uomini di fare sotto il cielo, tutti i giorni della vita loro.

4 Io ho fatte dell’opere magnifiche; io mi ho edificate delle case; io mi ho piantate delle vigne.

5 Io mi ho fatti degli orti e de’ giardini; ed ho piantati in essi degli alberi fruttiferi di ogni maniera.

6 Io mi ho fatte delle pescine d’acqua, per adacquar con esse il bosco ove crescono gli alberi.

7 Io ho acquistati de’ servi e delle serve, ed ho avuti de’ servi nati ed allevati in casa; ho eziandio avuto molto grosso e minuto bestiame, più che tutti quelli che sono stati innanzi a me in Gerusalemme.

8 Io mi ho eziandio adunato dell’argento, e dell’oro, e delle cose le più care dei re, e delle provincie; io mi ho acquistato de’ cantori e delle cantatrici; ed ho avute delle delizie degli uomini, d’ogni maniera: musica semplice, e musica di concerto.

9 E mi sono aggrandito ed accresciuto più che tutti quelli che sono stati innanzi a me in Gerusalemme; la mia sapienza eziandio mi è restata.

10 E non ho sottratta agli occhi miei cosa alcuna che abbiano chiesta; e non ho divietato il mio cuore da niuna allegrezza; anzi il mio cuore si è rallegrato d’ogni mia fatica; e questo è stato quello che mi è tocco in parte d’ogni mia fatica.

11 Ma, avendo considerate tutte le mie opere che le mie mani aveano fatte; e la fatica che io avea durata a farle, ecco, tutto ciò era vanità, e tormento di spirito; e non vi è di ciò profitto alcuno sotto il sole.

12 Laonde mi son rivolto a vedere la sapienza, e le follie, e la stoltizia; perciocchè, che cosa sono gli altri uomini, per poter seguitare il re? essi fanno ciò che hanno già fatto.

13 Ed ho veduto che la sapienza è più eccellente che la stoltizia; siccome la luce è più eccellente che le tenebre.

14 Il savio ha i suoi occhi nel capo, e lo stolto cammina in tenebre; ma pure eziandio ho conosciuto che un medesimo avvenimento avviene ad essi tutti.

15 Laonde ho detto nel cuor mio: Egli avverrà anche a me il medesimo avvenimento che allo stolto; che mi gioverà egli adunque allora d’essere stato più savio? perciò ho detto nel cuor mio che ciò ancora è vanità.

16 Perciocchè non vi sarà giammai più memoria del savio, come nè anche dello stolto; conciossiachè nei giorni vegnenti ogni cosa sarà già dimenticata. E come muore il savio così muore anche lo stolto.

17 Perciò ho odiata questa vita; imperocchè le opere che si fanno sotto il sole mi son dispiaciute; perchè ogni cosa è vanità, e tormento di spirito.

18 Ho eziando odiata ogni mia fatica che io ho durata sotto il sole, la quale io lascerò a colui che sarà dopo di me.

19 E chi sa s’egli sarà savio, o stolto? e pure egli sarà signore d’ogni mia fatica, intorno alla quale mi sarò affaticato, ed avrò adoperata la mia sapienza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità.

20 Perciò, mi son rivolto a far perdere al mio cuore la speranza d’ogni fatica, intorno alla quale io mi sono affaticato sotto il sole.

21 Perciocchè vi è tale uomo, la cui fatica sarà stata con sapienza, con conoscimento, e con dirittura; il quale pur la lascia per parte a chi non s’è affaticato intorno. Anche questo è vanità, e gran molestia.

22 Perciocchè, che cosa ha un tale uomo di tutta la sua fatica, e del tormento del suo spirito, con che egli si affatica sotto il sole?

23 Conciossiachè tutti i suoi giorni non sieno altro che dolori, e le sue occupazioni altro che molestia; anche non pur di notte il cuor suo non riposa. Questo ancora è vanità.

24 Non è egli cosa buona nell’uomo, ch’egli mangi e beva, e faccia goder di beni l’anima sua, con la sua fatica? Anche questo ho veduto esser dalla mano di Dio.

25 Perciocchè, chi mangerebbe, e chi goderebbe, se io nol facessi?

26 Conciossiachè Iddio dia all’uomo, che gli è grato, sapienza, conoscimento ed allegrezza; ed al peccatore, egli dà occupazione di adunare e di ammassare, per dare a colui che è grato a Dio. Questo ancora è vanità, e tormento di spirito.

1 I thought to myself, "Now I want to experiment with pleasure and enjoy myself." But even this was pointless.

2 I thought, "Laughter doesn't make any sense. What does pleasure accomplish?"

3 I explored ways to make myself feel better by drinking wine. I also explored ways to do [some] foolish things. During all that time, wisdom continued to control my mind. I was able to determine whether this was good for mortals to do during their brief lives under heaven.

4 I accomplished some great things: I built houses for myself. I planted vineyards for myself.

5 I made gardens and parks for myself. I planted every kind of fruit tree in them.

6 I made pools to water the forest of growing trees.

7 I bought male and female slaves. In addition, slaves were born in my household. I owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.

8 I also gathered silver and gold for myself. I gathered the treasures of kings and provinces. I provided myself with male and female singers and the pleasures men have with one concubine after another.

9 So I grew richer than anyone in Jerusalem before me. Yet, my wisdom remained with me.

10 If something appealed to me, I did it. I allowed myself to have any pleasure I wanted, since I found pleasure in my work. This was my reward for all my hard work.

11 But when I turned to look at all that I had accomplished and all the hard work I had put into it, I saw that it was all pointless. [It was like] trying to catch the wind. I gained nothing [from any of my accomplishments] under the sun.

12 Then I turned [my attention] to experience wisdom, madness, and foolishness. For instance, what can the man who replaces the king do? Only what has already been done.

13 But I saw that wisdom has an advantage over foolishness as light has an advantage over darkness.

14 A wise person uses the eyes in his head, but a fool walks in the dark. But I have also come to realize that the same destiny waits for both of them.

15 I thought to myself, "[If] the destiny that waits for the fool waits for me as well, then what is the advantage in being wise?" So I thought that even this is pointless.

16 Neither the wise person nor the fool will be remembered for long, since both will be forgotten in the days to come. Both the wise person and the fool will die.

17 So I came to hate life because everything done under the sun seemed wrong to me. Everything was pointless. [It was like] trying to catch the wind.

18 I came to hate everything for which I had worked so hard under the sun, because I will have to leave it to the person who replaces me.

19 Who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? He will still have control over everything under the sun for which I worked so hard and used my wisdom. Even this is pointless.

20 Then I fell into despair over everything for which I had worked so hard under the sun.

21 Here is someone who had worked hard with wisdom, knowledge, and skill. Yet, he must turn over his estate to someone else, who didn't work for it. Even this is pointless and a terrible tragedy.

22 What do people get from all of their hard work and struggles under the sun?

23 Their entire life is filled with pain, and their work is unbearable. Even at night their minds don't rest. Even this is pointless.

24 There is nothing better for people to do than to eat, drink, and find satisfaction in their work. I saw that even this comes from the hand of God.

25 Who can eat or enjoy themselves without God?

26 God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to anyone who pleases him. But to the person who continues to sin, he gives the job of gathering and collecting [wealth]. The sinner must turn his wealth over to the person who pleases God. Even this is pointless. [It's like] trying to catch the wind.
