1 CHI è come il savio? e chi conosce la dichiarazione delle cose? la sapienza dell’uomo gli rischiara il volto, e la durezza della sua faccia ne è mutata.

2 Io ti ammonisco che tu osservi il comandamento del re; eziandio per cagione del giuramento fatto nel Nome di Dio.

3 Non affrettarti a partirti dal suo cospetto; ed anche non presentarti a lui con qualche cosa malvagia; perciocchè egli farà tutto quello che gli piacerà.

4 Perciocchè la parola del re è con imperio; e chi gli dirà: Che fai?

5 Chi osserva il comandamento non proverà alcun malvagio accidente; e il cuor dell’uomo savio conosce il tempo e il buon modo, che si deve tenere.

6 Conciossiachè a qual si voglia affare vi sia tempo e modo; perciocchè gran mali soprastanno all’uomo.

7 Perchè egli non sa quello che avverrà; imperocchè, chi gli dichiarerà come le cose saranno?

8 Niun uomo ha potere sopra il vento, per rattenere il vento; e non vi è potere alcuno contro al giorno della morte, e nella battaglia non vi è licenza; così l’empietà non lascerà scampar quelli ne’ quali ella si trova.

9 Io ho veduto tutto questo; e ponendo mente a tutte le cose che si fanno sotto il sole, ho veduto che vi è tal tempo, che l’uomo signoreggia sopra l’uomo, a danno di esso.

10 Ed allora ho veduto degli empi, esser sepolti, e venire al loro riposo; e di quelli che s’erano portati con dirittura, andarsene dal luogo santo, ed esser dimenticati nella città. Anche questo è vanità.

11 PERCIOCCHÈ la sentenza non è prontamente data contro alle opere malvage, però il cuor de’ figliuoli degli uomini è pieno dentro di loro di voglia di mal fare.

12 Conciossiachè il peccatore faccia male cento volte, e pur la pena gli è prolungata; ma pure ancora so io che bene sarà a coloro che temono Iddio, perchè riveriscono la sua faccia.

13 E che bene non sarà all’empio, e ch’egli non prolungherà i suoi giorni, che se ne andranno come l’ombra; perciocchè egli non riverisce la faccia di Dio.

14 Vi è una vanità che avviene sopra la terra; cioè: che vi son de’ giusti, a’ quali avviene secondo l’opera degli empi; e vi son degli empi, a’ quali avviene secondo l’opera de’ giusti. Io ho detto che anche questo è vanità.

15 Perciò, io ho lodata l’allegrezza; conciossiachè l’uomo non abbia altro bene sotto il sole, se non di mangiare, e di bere, e di gioire, e questo è quello ch’egli, con la sua fatica, ha in presto a’ dì della sua vita, che Iddio gli ha dati sotto il sole.

16 Quando io ho recato il cuor mio a conoscer la sapienza, ed a veder gli affari che si fanno sopra la terra perciocchè nè giorno nè notte esso mio cuore non vede sonno degli occhi suoi;

17 io ho veduto, quant’è a tutte le opere di Dio, che l’uomo non può rinvenir le opere che si fanno sotto il sole; intorno alle quali egli si affatica, cercandole, e non le trova; ed avvegnachè il savio dica di aver conoscimento, non però le può trovare.

GOD'S WORD Translation GW

1 Who is really wise? Who knows how to explain things? Wisdom makes one's face shine, and it changes one's grim look.

2 I [advise] you to obey the king's commands because of the oath you took in God's presence.

3 Don't be in a hurry to leave the king's service. Don't take part in something evil, because he can do whatever he pleases.

4 Since a king's word has such power, no one can ask him what he is doing.

5 Whoever obeys his commands will avoid trouble. The mind of a wise person will know the right time and the right way [to act].

6 There is a right time and a right way [to act] in every situation. Yet, a terrible human tragedy hangs over people.

7 They don't know what the future will bring. So who can tell them how things will turn out?

8 No one has the power to prevent the spirit of life from leaving. No one has control over the day of his own death. There is no way to avoid the war [against death]. Wickedness will not save wicked people [from dying].

9 I have seen all of this, and I have carefully considered all that is done under the sun whenever one person has authority to hurt others.

10 Then I saw wicked people given an [honorable] burial. They used to go in and out of the holy place. They were praised in the city for doing such things. Even this is pointless.

11 When a sentence against a crime isn't carried out quickly, people are encouraged to commit crimes.

12 A sinner may commit a hundred crimes and yet live a long life. Still, I know with certainty that it will go well for those who fear God, because they fear him.

13 But it will not go well for the wicked. They will not live any longer. Their lives are like shadows, because they don't fear God.

14 There is something being done on earth that is pointless. Righteous people suffer for what the wicked do, and wicked people get what the righteous deserve. I say that even this is pointless.

15 So I recommend the enjoyment [of life]. People have nothing better to do under the sun than to eat, drink, and enjoy themselves. This joy will stay with them while they work hard during their brief lives which God has given them under the sun.

16 When I carefully considered how to study wisdom and how to look at the work that is done on earth (even going without sleep day and night),

17 then I saw everything that God has done. No one is able to grasp the work that is done under the sun. However hard a person may search for it, he will not find [its meaning]. Even though a wise person claims to know, he is not able to grasp it.
