1 PERCIOCCHÈ io mi ho recate tutte queste cose al cuore, eziandio per chiarir tutto questo: come i giusti e i savi, e i fatti loro, essendo nella man di Dio, gli uomini non conoscono nè l’amore, nè l’odio: tutto è davanti a loro.

2 Tutte le cose avvengono simigliantemente a tutti; un medesimo avvenimento avviene al giusto, ed all’empio; al buono e puro, ed all’immondo; a chi sacrifica, ed a chi non sacrifica; quale è il buono, tale è il peccatore; tal chi giura, qual chi teme di giurare.

3 Quest’è una cosa molesta, fra tutte quelle che si fanno sotto il sole, che un medesimo avvenimento avviene a tutti; ed anche, che mentre i figliuoli degli uomini sono in vita, il cuor loro è pien di male, ed hanno delle follie al cuore; e dopo ciò, vanno a’ morti.

4 Perciocchè, chi è che faccia eccezione? Vi è qualche speranza per tutti quelli che sono in vita; conciossiachè la condizione d’un can vivo sia migliore che quella d’un leone morto.

5 Perciocchè i viventi sanno che morranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla, e non vi è più alcun premio per loro; perciocchè la lor memoria è dimenticata.

6 Già e il loro amore, e il loro odio, e la loro invidia è perita; e non hanno giammai più parte alcuna in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.

7 Va’, mangia il tuo pane allegramente, e bevi il tuo vino di cuore lieto; se pure Iddio gradisce le tue opere.

8 Sieno in ogni tempo i tuoi vestimenti bianchi; e l’olio odorifero non venga meno in sul tuo capo.

9 Godi della vita con la moglie che tu ami, tutti i giorni della vita della tua vanità, i quali Iddio ti ha dati sotto il sole, tutto il tempo della tua vanità; perciocchè questa è la tua parte nella tua vita, e il frutto della tua fatica, che tu duri sotto il sole.

10 Fa’ a tuo potere tutto quello che avrai modo di fare; perciocchè sotterra, ove tu vai, non vi è nè opera, nè ragione, nè conoscimento, nè sapienza alcuna.

11 DI nuovo, io ho veduto sotto il sole, che il correre non è in poter de’ leggieri, nè il far la guerra in poter de’ prodi, nè l’aver del pane in poter de’ savi, nè l’acquistar ricchezze in poter de’ prudenti, nè d’essere in grazia in poter degl’intendenti; conciossiachè ad essi tutti avvengano tempi e casi.

12 Perciocchè l’uomo non pur conosce il suo tempo. Come i pesci, che son presi con la mala rete; e come gli uccelli, che son colti col laccio; così sono allacciati i figliuoli degli uomini, al tempo dell’avversità, quando cade loro di subito addosso.

13 Pure ancora ho veduta questa sapienza sotto il sole, che mi è paruta grande:

14 vi era una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; ed un gran re venne contro ad essa, e l’intorniò, e fece di gran bastie contro ad essa;

15 e in essa si trovò un povero uomo savio, il qual liberò la città con la sua sapienza, benchè niuno si ricordasse di quel povero uomo.

16 Allora io dissi: Meglio val sapienza che forza; benchè la sapienza del povero sia sprezzata, e che le sue parole non sieno ascoltate.

17 Le parole de’ savi devono esser più quietamente ascoltate, che la grida d’un signore fra gli stolti.

18 La sapienza val meglio che gli strumenti bellici; ma un sol peccatore fa perire un gran bene.

GOD'S WORD Translation GW

1 Now, I have carefully thought about all this, and I explain it in this way: Righteous people and wise people, along with their accomplishments, are in God's hands. No one knows whether there will be love or hatred.

2 Everything turns out the same way for everyone. All people will share the same destiny, whether they are righteous, wicked, or good, clean or unclean, whether they offer sacrifices or don't offer sacrifices. Good people are treated like sinners. People who take oaths are treated like those who are afraid to take oaths.

3 This is the tragedy of everything that happens under the sun: Everyone shares the same destiny. Moreover, the hearts of mortals are full of evil. Madness is in their hearts while they are still alive. After that, they join the dead.

4 But all who are among the living have hope, because a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 The living know that they will die, but the dead don't know anything. There is no more reward for the dead when the memory of them has faded.

6 Their love, their hate, and their passions have already vanished. They will never again take part in anything that happens under the sun.

7 Go, enjoy eating your food, and drink your wine cheerfully, because God has already accepted what you've done.

8 Always wear clean clothes, and never go without lotion on your head.

9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, during all your brief, pointless life. God has given you your pointless life under the sun. This is your lot [in life] and what you get for the hard work that you do under the sun.

10 Whatever presents itself for you to do, do it with [all] your might, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or skill in the grave where you're going.

11 I saw something else under the sun. The race isn't [won] by fast runners, or the battle by heroes. Wise people don't necessarily have food. Intelligent people don't necessarily have riches, and skilled people don't necessarily receive special treatment. But time and unpredictable events overtake all of them.

12 No one knows when his time will come. Like fish that are caught in a cruel net or birds caught in a snare, humans are trapped by a disaster when it suddenly strikes them.

13 I also have seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it made a deep impression on me.

14 There was a small town with a few soldiers in it, and a powerful king came to attack it. He surrounded it and blockaded it.

15 A poor, wise person was found in that town. He saved the town using his wisdom. But no one remembered that poor person.

16 So I said, "Wisdom is better than strength," even though that poor person's wisdom was despised, and no one listened to what he said.

17 One should pay more attention to calm words from wise people than shouting from a ruler of fools.

18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much that is good.
