4 de’ figliuoli di Pahat-Moab, Elioenai, figliuolo di Zerahia, e con lui dugento maschi;

5 de’ figliuoli di Secania, il figliuolo di Iahaziel, e con lui trecento maschi;

6 e de’ figliuoli di Adin, Ebed, figliuolo di Gionatan, e con lui cinquanta maschi;

7 e de’ figliuoli di Elam, Isaia, figliuolo di Atalia, e con lui settanta maschi;

8 e de’ figliuoli di Sefatia, Zebadia, figliuolo di Micael, e con lui ottanta maschi;

9 de’ figliuoli di Ioab, Obadia, figliuolo di Iehiel, e con lui dugendiciotto maschi;

10 e de’ figliuoli di Selomit, il figliuolo di Iosifia, e con lui censessanta maschi;

11 e de’ figliuoli di Bebai, Zaccaria, figliuolo di Bebai, e con lui ventotto maschi;

12 e de’ figliuoli di Azgad, Iohanan, figliuolo di Catan, e con lui cendieci maschi;

13 e de’ figliuoli di Adonicam, gli ultimi, i cui nomi son questi: Elifelet, Iehiel, e Semaia, e con loro sessanta maschi;

14 e de’ figliuoli di Bigvai: Utai, e Zabbud, e con loro sessanta maschi.

15 Ed io li adunai presso del fiume, che corre in Ahava; e quivi stemmo accampati lo spazio di tre giorni. Ed avendo fatta la rassegna del popolo e de’ sacerdoti, non vi trovai alcuno de’ figliuoli di Levi.

16 Perciò, mandai Eliezer, Ariel, Semaia, Elnatan, Iarib, Elnatan, Natan, Zaccaria, e Mesullam, ch’erano capi; e Ioiarib, ed Elnatan, dottori;

17 e comandai loro che andassero ad Iddo, capo nel luogo detto Casifia; ed ordinai loro quello che aveano a dire ad Iddo ed al suo fratello, Netinei, nel luogo di Casifia, per menarci de’ ministri per la Casa dell’Iddio nostro.

18 Ed essi ci menarono, secondo che la mano dell’Iddio nostro era buona sopra noi, un uomo intendente, de’ figliuoli di Mahali, figliuolo di Levi, figliuolo d’Israele, cioè Serebia, insieme co’ suoi figliuoli, e fratelli, in numero di diciotto persone;

19 ed Hasabia, e con lui, Isaia, d’infra i figliuoli di Merari, co’ suoi fratelli, e i lor figliuoli, in numero di venti persone;

20 e de’ Netinei, i quali Davide, ed i capi del popolo aveano costituiti al ministerio de’ Leviti, dugenventi Netinei, che furono tutti nominati per li nomi loro.

21 Ed io bandii quivi il digiuno presso del fiume di Ahava, per umiliarci nel cospetto dell’Iddio nostro, per chiedergli prospero viaggio per noi, per le nostre famiglie, e per tutte le nostre facoltà.

22 Perciocchè io mi vergognava di chiedere al re gente d’arme, o cavalieri, per difenderci da’ nemici per lo cammino; conciossiachè noi avessimo detto al re: La mano dell’Iddio nostro è in bene sopra tutti quelli che lo cercano; ma la sua potenza, e la sua ira, è contro a tutti quelli che l’abbandonano.

23 Così noi digiunammo, e facemmo richiesta all’Iddio nostro intorno a ciò, ed egli ci esaudì.

24 Allora io misi da parte dodici de’ principali sacerdoti, con Serebia, Hasabia, e dieci de’ lor fratelli.

25 E pesai loro l’argento, e l’oro, ed i vasellamenti, ch’era l’offerta ch’era stata fatta per la Casa dell’Iddio nostro, dal re, da’ suoi consiglieri, e da’ suoi principi, e da tutti gli Israeliti che si ritrovarono.

26 Io adunque pesai loro in mano seicencinquanta talenti d’argento, e di vasellamenti di argento cento talenti, e cento talenti d’oro;

27 e venti coppe d’oro, che pesavano mille dramme; e due vasi d’oricalco fino, preziosi come d’oro.

28 Ed io dissi loro: Voi siete persone sacre al Signore; questi vasellamenti sono anch’essi cosa sacra; e quest’argento, e quest’oro, è una offerta volontaria fatta al Signore Iddio de’ vostri padri.

29 Guardateli vigilantemente, finchè voi li pesiate in presenza de’ principali d’infra i sacerdoti e Leviti; e de’ capi delle famiglie paterne d’Israele, in Gerusalemme, nelle camere della Casa del Signore.

30 I sacerdoti adunque ed i Leviti ricevettero quell’argento, e quell’oro, e quei vasellamenti, a peso, per portar tutto ciò in Gerusalemme, nella Casa dell’Iddio nostro.

31 E noi ci partimmo d’appresso al fiume di Ahava al duodecimo giorno del primo mese, per andare in Gerusalemme; e la mano dell’Iddio nostro fu sopra noi, ed egli ci liberò dalle mani dei nemici e degl’insidiatori, per lo cammino.

32 Ed arrivammo in Gerusalemme; e dopo che fummo quivi stati tre giorni,

33 al quarto giorno fu pesato quell’argento, e quell’oro, e que’ vasellamenti, nella Casa dell’Iddio nostro, nelle mani di Meremot, figliuolo di Uria sacerdote, col quale era Eleazaro, figliuolo di Finees; e con loro erano Iozabad, figliuolo di Iesua, e Noadia, figliuolo di Binnui, Leviti.

34 Tutto ciò fu loro dato a conto ed a peso; e il peso di tutto fu scritto in quello stesso tempo.

35 E quelli ch’erano stati in cattività, ed erano ritornati, offersero per olocausto all’Iddio d’Israele, dodici giovenchi per tutto Israele, novantasei montoni, settantasette agnelli, e dodici becchi per lo peccato; tutto ciò fu offerto in olocausto al Signore.

36 Poi diedero i decreti del re a’ satrapi del re, ed a’ governatori di qua dal fiume; ed essi presero a favoreggiare il popolo, e la Casa di Dio.

3 Zechariah, of the clan of Parosh, with 150 men of his clan (there were records of their ancestry)

4 Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, of the clan of Pahath Moab, with 200 men

5 Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, of the clan of Zattu, with 300 men

6 Ebed son of Jonathan, of the clan of Adin, with 50 men

7 Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, of the clan of Elam, with 70 men

8 Zebadiah son of Michael, of the clan of Shephatiah, with 80 men

9 Obadiah son of Jehiel, of the clan of Joab, with 218 men

10 Shelomith son of Josiphiah, of the clan of Bani, with 160 men

11 Zechariah son of Bebai, of the clan of Bebai, with 28 men

12 Johanan son of Hakkatan, of the clan of Azgad, with 110 men

13 Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah, of the clan of Adonikam, with 60 men (they returned at a later date)

14 Uthai and Zaccur, of the clan of Bigvai, with 70 men

15 I assembled the entire group by the canal that runs to the town of Ahava, and we camped there three days. I found that there were priests in the group, but no Levites.

16 I sent for nine of the leaders: Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, and for two teachers, Joiarib and Elnathan.

17 I sent them to Iddo, head of the community at Casiphia, to ask him and his associates, the Temple workers, to send us people to serve God in the Temple.

18 Through God's grace they sent us Sherebiah, an able man, a Levite from the clan of Mahli; and eighteen of his sons and brothers came with him.

19 They also sent Hashabiah and Jeshaiah of the clan of Merari, with twenty of their relatives.

20 In addition there were 220 Temple workers whose ancestors had been designated by King David and his officials to assist the Levites. They were all listed by name.

21 There by the Ahava Canal I gave orders for us all to fast and humble ourselves before our God and to ask him to lead us on our journey and protect us and our children and all our possessions.

22 I would have been ashamed to ask the emperor for a troop of cavalry to guard us from any enemies during our journey, because I had told him that our God blesses everyone who trusts him, but that he is displeased with and punishes anyone who turns away from him.

23 So we fasted and prayed for God to protect us, and he answered our prayers.

24 From among the leading priests I chose Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten others.

25 Then I weighed out the silver, the gold, and the utensils which the emperor, his advisers and officials, and the people of Israel had given to be used in the Temple, and I gave it to the priests.

26 This is what I gave them: silver - 22 tonnes, 100 silver utensils - 70 kilogrammes

27 gold - 3,400 kilogrammes, 20 gold bowls - 8.4 kilogrammes, 2 fine bronze bowls, equal in value to gold bowls

28 I said to them, "You are sacred to the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and so are all the silver and gold utensils brought to him as freewill offerings.

29 Guard them carefully until you reach the Temple. There in the priests' rooms weigh them and turn them over to the leaders of the priests and of the Levites, and to the leaders of the people of Israel in Jerusalem."

30 So the priests and the Levites took charge of the silver, the gold, and the utensils, to take them to the Temple in Jerusalem.

31 It was on the twelfth day of the first month that we left the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. Our God was with us and protected us from enemy attacks and from ambush as we traveled.

32 When we reached Jerusalem, we rested three days.

33 Then on the fourth day we went to the Temple, weighed the silver, the gold, and the utensils, and turned them over to Meremoth the priest, son of Uriah. With him were Eleazar son of Phinehas and two Levites, Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.

34 Everything was counted and weighed, and a complete record was made at the same time.

35 All those who had returned from exile then brought offerings to be burned as sacrifices to the God of Israel. They offered 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, and 77 lambs; they also offered 12 goats to purify themselves from sin. All these animals were burned as sacrifices to the Lord.

36 They also took the document the emperor had given them and gave it to the governors and officials of West-of-Euphrates Province, who then gave their support to the people and the Temple worship.
