1 Y orando Esdras y confesando, llorando y postrándose delante de la casa de Dios, se juntó a él una muy grande multitud de Israel, hombres y mujeres y niños; y lloraba el pueblo con gran llanto.

While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly.
2 <I>Entonces</I> respondió Secanías hijo de Jehiel, de los hijos Elam, y dijo a Esdras: Nos hemos rebelado contra nuestro Dios, pues tomamos mujeres extranjeras de los pueblos de la tierra; mas hay aún esperanza para Israel sobre esto.

Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.
3 Por tanto ahora hagamos alianza con nuestro Dios, que echaremos todas las mujeres y los nacidos de ellas, según el consejo del Señor, y de los que temen el mandamiento de nuestro Dios; y hágase conforme a la ley.

Now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.
4 Levántate, porque a ti toca el negocio, y nosotros <I>estaremos</I> contigo; esfuérzate, y ponlo por obra.

Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”
5 Entonces se levantó Esdras, y juramentó a los príncipes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo Israel, que harían conforme a esto; y <I>ellos</I> juraron.

So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath.
6 Se levantó <I>luego</I> Esdras de delante <I>de</I> la Casa de Dios, y se fue a la cámara de Johanán hijo de Eliasib; e ido allá, no comió pan ni bebió agua, porque se entristeció sobre la prevaricación de <I>los</I> de la transmigración.

Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water, because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
7 E hicieron pasar pregón por Judá y por Jerusalén a todos los hijos de la transmigración, que se juntasen en Jerusalén;

A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem.
8 y que el que no viniera dentro de tres días, conforme al acuerdo de los príncipes y de los ancianos, perdiese toda su hacienda, y él fuese apartado de la compañía <I>de los</I> de la transmigración.

Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
9 Así fueron reunidos todos los varones de Judá y de Benjamín en Jerusalén dentro de tres días, a los veinte del mes, el cual <I>era</I> el mes noveno; y se sentó todo el pueblo en la plaza de la Casa de Dios, temblando con motivo de aquel negocio, y a causa de las lluvias.

Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain.
10 Y se levantó Esdras el sacerdote, y les dijo: Vosotros habéis prevaricado, por cuanto tomásteis mujeres extrañas, añadiendo <I>así</I> sobre el pecado de Israel.

Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt.
11 Ahora pues, dad confesión al SEÑOR Dios de vuestros padres, y haced su voluntad, y apartaos de los pueblos de las tierras, y de las mujeres extranjeras.

Now honor the LORD, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.”
12 Y respondió toda la congregación, y dijeron en alta voz: Así se haga conforme a tu palabra.

The whole assembly responded with a loud voice: “You are right! We must do as you say.
13 Mas el pueblo <I>es</I> mucho, y el tiempo lluvioso, y no hay fuerza para estar en la calle; ni la obra es de un día ni de dos, porque somos muchos los que hemos prevaricado en este negocio.

But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing.
14 Estén ahora nuestro príncipes, <I>los</I> de toda la congregación; y todos aquellos que en nuestras ciudades hubieren tomado mujeres extranjeras, vengan a tiempos aplazados, y con ellos los ancianos de cada ciudad, y los jueces de ellas, hasta que apartemos de nosotros el furor de la ira de nuestro Dios sobre esto.

Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
15 Fueron pues puestos sobre este negocio Jonatán hijo de Asael, y Jahazías hijo de Ticva; y Mesulam y Sabetai, levitas, les ayudaron.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, opposed this.
16 E hicieron así los hijos de la transmigración. Y fueron apartados Esdras <I>y</I> los varones cabezas de los padres en la casa de sus padres, y todos ellos por <I>sus</I> nombres; y se sentaron el primer día del mes décimo para inquirir sobre el negocio.

So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases,
17 Y concluyeron, con todos aquellos que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, al primer día del mes primero.

and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.
18 Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, fueron hallados éstos: De los hijos de Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, y Eliezer, y Jarib, y Gedalías;

Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women: From the descendants of Joshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah.
19 y dieron su mano en promesa de echar sus mujeres, y <I>ofrecieron como</I> culpados un carnero de los rebaños por su delito.

(They all gave their hands in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)
