1 Cuando se enteraron los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín de que el pueblo del destierro estaba edificando un templo al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel,

2 se llegaron a Zorobabel y a los jefes de casas paternas, y les dijeron: Vamos a edificar con vosotros, porque, como vosotros, buscamos a vuestro Dios, y le hemos estado ofreciendo sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón, rey de Asiria, que nos trajo aquí.

3 Pero Zorobabel y Jesúa y los demás jefes de casas paternas de Israel les dijeron: No tenéis nada en común con nosotros para que juntos edifiquemos una casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros unidos la edificaremos al SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, como nos ordenó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

4 Entonces el pueblo de aquella tierra se puso a desanimar al pueblo de Judá, y a atemorizarlos para que dejaran de edificar;

5 y tomaron a sueldo contra ellos consejeros para frustrar sus propósitos, todos los días de Ciro, rey de Persia, hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

6 En el reinado de Asuero , al principio de su reinado, escribieron una acusación contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

7 Y en los días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y sus demás compañeros escribieron a Artajerjes, rey de Persia, y el texto de la carta estaba en escritura aramea y traducido al arameo.

8 Rehum, el gobernador, y Simsai, el escriba, escribieron una carta al rey Artajerjes contra Jerusalén, de esta manera:

9 Rehum, el gobernador, Simsai, el escriba, y sus demás compañeros, los jueces y los gobernadores de menos categoría, los oficiales, los secretarios, los hombres de Erec, los babilonios, los hombres de Susa, es decir, los elamitas,

10 y las demás naciones que el grande y noble Asnapar deportó y estableció en la ciudad de Samaria, y en el resto de la provincia al otro lado del río . (Y ahora

11 esta es la copia de la carta que le enviaron.) Al rey Artajerjes, de tus siervos, los hombres de la provincia al otro lado del río: Y ahora

12 sepa el rey que los judíos que subieron de ti han venido a nosotros en Jerusalén; están reedificando la ciudad rebelde y perversa, y están terminando las murallas y reparando los cimientos.

13 Ahora sepa el rey, que si esa ciudad es reedificada y las murallas terminadas, ellos no pagarán tributo, ni impuesto, ni peaje, lo cual perjudicará los ingresos de los reyes.

14 Y debido a que estamos en el servicio del palacio, y no es apropiado que veamos el menosprecio del rey, por eso hemos enviado para hacerlo saber al rey,

15 a fin de que se investigue en el libro de las Memorias de tus padres. Y en el libro de las Memorias hallarás y sabrás que esa ciudad es una ciudad rebelde y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que en tiempos pasados se han incitado rebeliones dentro de ella; por eso fue devastada esa ciudad.

16 Nosotros informamos al rey que si esa ciudad es reedificada y las murallas terminadas, como resultado, el territorio más allá del río no será tuyo.

17 Entonces el rey envió respuesta a Rehum, el gobernador, a Simsai, el escriba, y a sus demás compañeros que habitan en Samaria y en las demás provincias al otro lado del río: Paz. Y ahora

18 el documento que nos enviasteis ha sido leído claramente delante de mí.

19 Y por mí fue proclamado un decreto; se investigaron los hechos, y se ha descubierto que esa ciudad en tiempos pasados se ha levantado contra los reyes, y que en ella se ha fomentado rebelión e insurrección;

20 que reyes poderosos han reinado sobre Jerusalén, gobernando todas las provincias más allá del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuesto y peaje.

21 Ahora pues, proclamad un decreto para que estos hombres paren la obra y que esa ciudad no sea reedificada hasta que salga un decreto de mí.

22 Y cuidaos de no ser negligentes en cumplir este asunto; ¿por qué se ha de aumentar el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?

23 Entonces, tan pronto como la copia del documento del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, del escriba Simsai, y sus compañeros, fueron a toda prisa a Jerusalén, a los judíos, y los hicieron parar por la fuerza.

24 Entonces cesó la obra en la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, y quedó suspendida hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

1 Old enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building The Temple of the God of Israel.

2 They came to Zerubbabel and the family heads and said, "We'll help you build. We worship your God the same as you. We've been offering sacrifices to him since Esarhaddon king of Assyria brought us here."

3 Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel said to them, "Nothing doing. Building The Temple of our God is not the same thing to you as to us. We alone will build for the God of Israel. We're the ones King Cyrus of Persia commanded to do it."

4 So these people started beating down the morale of the people of Judah, harassing them as they built.

5 They even hired propagandists to sap their resolve. They kept this up for about fifteen years, throughout the lifetime of Cyrus king of Persia and on into the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 In fact, in the reign of Xerxes, at the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against those living in Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Again later, in the time of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and their associates wrote regarding the Jerusalem business to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated. (What follows is written in Aramaic.)

8 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows:

9 From: Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary, backed by the rest of their associates, the judges and officials over the people from Tripolis, Persia, Erech, and Babylon, Elamites of Susa,

10 and all the others whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal deported and settled in the city of Samaria and other places in the land across the Euphrates.

11 (This is the copy of the letter they sent to him.) To: King Artaxerxes from your servants from the land across the Euphrates.

12 We are here to inform the king that the Jews who came from you to us have arrived in Jerusalem and have set about rebuilding that rebellious and evil city. They are busy at work finishing the walls and rebuilding the foundations.

13 The king needs to know that once that city is rebuilt and the wall completed they will no longer pay a penny of tribute, tax, or duty. The royal treasury will feel the loss.

14 We're loyal to the king and cannot sit idly by while our king is being insulted - that's why we are passing this information on.

15 We suggest that you look into the court records of your ancestors; you'll learn from those books that that city is a rebellious city, a thorn in the side to kings and provinces, an historic center of unrest and revolt. That's why the city was wiped out.

16 We are letting the king know that if that city gets rebuilt and its walls restored, you'll end up with nothing in your province beyond the Euphrates.

17 The king sent his reply to Rehum the commanding officer, Shimshai the secretary, and the rest of their associates who lived in Samaria and other places beyond the Euphrates.

18 The letter that you sent has been translated and read to me.

19 I gave orders to search the records, and sure enough it turns out that this city has revolted against kings time and again - rebellion is an old story there.

20 I find that they've had their share of strong kings who have taken over beyond the Euphrates and exacted taxes, tribute, and duty.

21 So do this: Order these men to stop work immediately - not a lick of rebuilding in that city unless I order it.

22 Act quickly and firmly; they've done enough damage to kings!

23 The letter of King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum and Shimshai the secretary and their associates. They lost no time. They went to the Jews in Jerusalem and made them quit work.

24 That put a stop to the work on The Temple of God in Jerusalem. Nothing more was done until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
