1 En el mes doce (es decir, el mes de Adar), el día trece cuando estaban para ejecutarse el mandato y edicto del rey, el mismo día que los enemigos de los judíos esperaban obtener dominio sobre ellos, sucedió lo contrario, porque fueron los judíos los que obtuvieron dominio sobre los que los odiaban.

2 Se reunieron los judíos en sus ciudades por todas las provincias del rey Asuero para echar mano a los que buscaban su daño; y nadie podía oponérseles, porque el temor a ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.

3 Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, los sátrapas, los gobernadores y los que manejaban los negocios del rey ayudaron a los judíos, porque el temor a Mardoqueo había caído sobre ellos,

4 pues Mardoqueo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama se había extendido por todas las provincias, porque Mardoqueo se hacía más y más grande.

5 Y los judíos hirieron a todos sus enemigos a filo de espada, con matanza y destrucción; e hicieron lo que quisieron con los que los odiaban.

6 En la fortaleza de Susa los judíos mataron y destruyeron a quinientos hombres,

7 también a Parsandata, Dalfón, Aspata,

8 Porata, Adalía, Aridata,

9 Parmasta, Arisai, Aridai y Vaizata,

10 los diez hijos de Amán, hijo de Hamedata, enemigo de los judíos; pero no echaron mano a los bienes.

11 Aquel mismo día comunicaron al rey el número de los que fueron muertos en la fortaleza de Susa.

12 Y el rey dijo a la reina Ester: En la fortaleza de Susa los judíos han matado y exterminado a quinientos hombres y a los diez hijos de Amán. ¡Qué habrán hecho en las demás provincias del rey! ¿Cuál es tu petición ahora? Pues te será concedida. ¿Qué más quieres? También te será hecho.

13 Entonces Ester dijo: Si le place al rey, que mañana también se conceda a los judíos que están en Susa hacer conforme al edicto de hoy; y que los diez hijos de Amán sean colgados en la horca.

14 El rey ordenó que así se hiciera; y un edicto fue promulgado en Susa, y los diez hijos de Amán fueron colgados.

15 Los judíos que se hallaban en Susa se reunieron también el día catorce del mes de Adar y mataron a trescientos hombres en Susa, pero no echaron mano a los bienes.

16 Y los demás judíos que se hallaban en las provincias del rey se reunieron para defender sus vidas y librarse de sus enemigos; y mataron a setenta y cinco mil de los que los odiaban, pero no echaron mano a los bienes.

17 Esto sucedió el día trece del mes de Adar, y el día catorce descansaron, y lo proclamaron día de banquete y de regocijo.

18 Pero los judíos que se hallaban en Susa se reunieron el trece y el catorce del mismo mes, y descansaron el día quince y lo proclamaron día de banquete y de regocijo.

19 Por eso los judíos de las áreas rurales, que habitan en las ciudades abiertas, proclaman el día catorce del mes de Adar día festivo para regocijarse, hacer banquetes y enviarse porciones de comida unos a otros.

20 Entonces Mardoqueo escribió estos hechos, y envió cartas a todos los judíos que se hallaban en todas las provincias del rey Asuero, tanto cercanas como lejanas,

21 ordenándoles que celebraran anualmente el día catorce del mes de Adar, y el día quince del mismo mes,

22 porque en esos días los judíos se libraron de sus enemigos, y fue para ellos un mes que se convirtió de tristeza en alegría y de duelo en día festivo; para que los hicieran días de banquete y de regocijo y para que se enviaran porciones de comida unos a otros, e hicieran donativos a los pobres.

23 Así los judíos llevaron a cabo lo que habían comenzado a hacer, y lo que Mardoqueo les había escrito.

24 Pues Amán, hijo de Hamedata, agagueo, enemigo de todos los judíos, había hecho planes contra los judíos para destruirlos, y había echado el Pur, es decir, la suerte, para su ruina y destrucción.

25 Pero cuando esto llegó al conocimiento del rey, éste ordenó por carta que el perverso plan que había tramado contra los judíos recayera sobre su cabeza, y que él y sus hijos fueran colgados en la horca.

26 Por eso estos días son llamados Purim, por el nombre Pur. Y a causa de las instrucciones en esta carta, tanto por lo que habían visto sobre este asunto y por lo que les había acontecido,

27 los judíos establecieron e hicieron una costumbre para ellos, para sus descendientes y para todos los que se aliaban con ellos, para que no dejaran de celebrar estos dos días conforme a su ordenanza y conforme a su tiempo señalado cada año.

28 Y estos días debían ser recordados y celebrados por todas las generaciones, por cada familia, cada provincia y cada ciudad; y que estos días de Purim no dejaran de celebrarse entre los judíos, ni su memoria se extinguiera entre sus descendientes.

29 Entonces la reina Ester, hija de Abihail, y el judío Mardoqueo escribieron con toda autoridad para confirmar esta segunda carta acerca de Purim.

30 Y se enviaron cartas a todos los judíos, a las ciento veintisiete provincias del reino de Asuero, palabras de paz y de verdad,

31 para establecer estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, tal como habían establecido para ellos el judío Mardoqueo y la reina Ester, según habían fijado para ellos y sus descendientes con instrucciones para sus tiempos de ayuno y de lamentaciones.

32 El mandato de Ester estableció estas costumbres acerca de Purim, y esto fue escrito en el libro.

1 On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the king's order came into effect. This was the very day that the enemies of the Jews had planned to overpower them, but the tables were now turned: the Jews overpowered those who hated them!

2 The Jews had gathered in the cities throughout King Xerxes' provinces to lay hands on those who were seeking their ruin. Not one man was able to stand up against them - fear made cowards of them all.

3 What's more, all the government officials, satraps, governors - everyone who worked for the king - actually helped the Jews because of Mordecai; they were afraid of him.

4 Mordecai by now was a power in the palace. As Mordecai became more and more powerful, his reputation had grown in all the provinces.

5 So the Jews finished off all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering them right and left, and did as they pleased to those who hated them.

6 In the palace complex of Susa the Jews massacred five hundred men.

7 They also killed the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the archenemy of the Jews: Parshandatha Dalphon

10 But they took no plunder.

11 That day, when it was all over, the number of those killed in the palace complex was given to the king.

12 The king told Queen Esther, "In the palace complex alone here in Susa the Jews have killed five hundred men, plus Haman's ten sons. Think of the killing that must have been done in the rest of the provinces! What else do you want? Name it and it's yours. Your wish is my command."

13 "If it please the king," Queen Esther responded, "give the Jews of Susa permission to extend the terms of the order another day. And have the bodies of Haman's ten sons hanged in public display on the gallows."

14 The king commanded it: The order was extended; the bodies of Haman's ten sons were publicly hanged.

15 The Jews in Susa went at it again. On the fourteenth day of Adar they killed another three hundred men in Susa. But again they took no plunder.

16 Meanwhile in the rest of the king's provinces, the Jews had organized and defended themselves, freeing themselves from oppression. On the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, they killed 75,000 of those who hated them but did not take any plunder.

17 The next day, the fourteenth, they took it easy and celebrated with much food and laughter.

18 But in Susa, since the Jews had banded together on both the thirteenth and fourteenth days, they made the fifteenth their holiday for laughing and feasting.

19 (This accounts for why Jews living out in the country in the rural villages remember the fourteenth day of Adar for celebration, their day for parties and the exchange of gifts.)

20 Mordecai wrote all this down and sent copies to all the Jews in all King Xerxes' provinces, regardless of distance,

21 calling for an annual celebration on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar

22 as the occasion when Jews got relief from their enemies, the month in which their sorrow turned to joy, mourning somersaulted into a holiday for parties and fun and laughter, the sending and receiving of presents and of giving gifts to the poor.

23 And they did it. What started then became a tradition, continuing the practice of what Mordecai had written to them.

24 Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the archenemy of all Jews, had schemed to destroy all Jews. He had cast the pur (the lot) to throw them into a panic and destroy them.

25 But when Queen Esther intervened with the king, he gave written orders that the evil scheme that Haman had worked out should boomerang back on his own head. He and his sons were hanged on the gallows.

26 That's why these days are called "Purim," from the word pur or "lot."

27 the Jews agreed to continue. It became a tradition for them, their children, and all future converts to remember these two days every year on the specified dates set down in the letter.

28 These days are to be remembered and kept by every single generation, every last family, every province and city. These days of Purim must never be neglected among the Jews; the memory of them must never die out among their descendants.

29 Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, backed Mordecai the Jew, using her full queenly authority in this second Purim letter

30 to endorse and ratify what he wrote. Calming and reassuring letters went out to all the Jews throughout the 127 provinces of Xerxes' kingdom

31 to fix these days of Purim their assigned place on the calendar, dates set by Mordecai the Jew - what they had agreed to for themselves and their descendants regarding their fasting and mourning.

32 Esther's word confirmed the tradition of Purim and was written in the book.
