1 LA parola del Signore mi fu ancora indirizzata, dicendo:

2 Figliuol d’uomo, parla a’ figliuoli del tuo popolo, e di’ loro: Quando io farò venire la spada sopra un paese, e il popolo del paese prenderà un uomo d’infra loro, e se lo porrà per vedetta;

3 ed esso, veggendo venir la spada sopra il paese, avrà sonato con la tromba, ed avrà avvisato il popolo;

4 se alcuno, avendo udito il suon della tromba, non si guarda, e la spada, essendo giunta, lo coglie, il suo sangue sarà sopra il suo capo.

5 Egli ha udito il suon della tromba, e non si è guardato; il suo sangue sarà sopra lui; se si fosse guardato, avrebbe scampata la vita sua.

6 Ma, se la vedetta vede venir la spada, e non suona con la tromba, e il popolo non è stato avvisato, e la spada viene, e coglie alcuna persona d’infra esso, ben sarà quella stata colta per la sua iniquità; ma io ridomanderò il suo sangue alla vedetta.

7 Così, figliuol d’uomo, io ti ho costituito vedetta, alla casa d’Israele; ascolta adunque la parola dalla mia bocca, ed ammoniscili da parte mia.

8 Quando io avrò detto all’empio: Empio, di certo tu morrai; e tu non avrai parlato, per ammonir l’empio che si ritragga dalla sua via, esso empio morrà per la sua iniquità; ma io ridomanderò il suo sangue dalla tua mano.

9 Ma se tu ammonisci l’empio ch’egli si converta dalla sua via, ed egli non se ne converte, egli morrà per la sua iniquità; ma tu avrai scampata l’anima tua.

10 Ora, figliuol d’uomo, di’ ancora alla casa d’Israele: Voi avete parlato così, dicendo: I nostri peccati, e i nostri misfatti son sopra noi; e noi ci siamo strutti per essi; e come potremo noi vivere?

11 Di’ loro: Come io vivo, dice il Signore Iddio, io non prendo diletto nella morte dell’empio: anzi prendo diletto che l’empio si converta dalla sua via, e che viva; convertitevi, convertitevi dalle vostre vie malvage: e perchè morreste voi, o casa d’Israele?

12 Figliuol d’uomo, di’ ancora a’ figliuoli del tuo popolo: La giustizia del giusto non lo salverà, qualora egli avrà misfatto; ed altresì l’empio non caderà per la sua empietà, nel giorno ch’egli si sarà convertito dalla sua empietà; come per essa il giusto non potrà vivere, nel giorno ch’egli avrà peccato.

13 Quando io avrò detto al giusto, ch’egli di certo viverà, se egli, confidatosi nella sua giustizia, commette iniquità, tutte le sue giustizie non saranno ricordate; anzi egli morrà per la sua iniquità, ch’egli avrà commessa.

14 Quando altresì avrò detto all’empio: Di certo tu morrai; se egli si converte dal suo peccato, e fa giudicio, e giustizia;

15 e rende il pegno, e restituisce ciò ch’egli ha rapito, e cammina negli statuti della vita, per non commettere iniquità; di certo egli viverà, non morrà.

16 Tutti i suoi peccati, ch’egli avrà commessi, non gli saranno ricordati; egli ha fatto giudicio e giustizia; egli viverà di certo.

17 Ora i figliuoli del tuo popolo han detto: La via del Signore non è bene addirizzata; ma la lor propria via è quella che non è bene addirizzata.

18 Quando il giusto si ritrarrà dalla sua giustizia, e commetterà iniquità, egli morrà per queste cose.

19 Quando altresì l’empio si ritrarrà dalla sua empietà, e farà giudicio, e giustizia, egli viverà per queste cose.

20 E voi avete detto: La via del Signore non è bene addirizzata! O casa d’Israele, io vi giudicherò, ciascuno secondo le sue vie.

21 OR avvenne che nell’anno duodecimo della nostra cattività, nel quinto giorno del decimo mese, venne a me uno ch’era scampato di Gerusalemme, dicendo: La città è stata percossa.

22 E la sera avanti la venuta di colui ch’era scampato, la mano del Signore era stata sopra me; ed egli mi avea aperta la bocca, finchè colui venne a me la mattina; e così la mia bocca fu aperta, e non fui più mutolo.

23 E la parola del Signore mi fu indirizzata, dicendo:

24 Figliuol d’uomo, gli abitatori di quei luoghi deserti, nel paese d’Israele, dicono: Abrahamo era solo, e pur possedette il paese; e noi siamo molti; il paese ci è dato in eredità.

25 Perciò, di’ loro: Così ha detto il Signore Iddio: Voi mangiate la carne col sangue, e levate gli occhi verso i vostri idoli, e spandete il sangue; possedereste voi il paese?

26 Voi vi mantenete in su la vostra spada, voi fate cose abbominevoli, e contaminate ciascuno la moglie del suo prossimo; e possedereste voi il paese?

27 Di’ loro così: Così ha detto il Signore Iddio: Come io vivo, quelli che sono in quei luoghi deserti caderanno per la spada; ed io darò coloro che son per li campi alle fiere, acciocchè li divorino; e quelli che son nelle fortezze e nelle spelonche morranno di pestilenza.

28 E metterò il paese in desolazione, e in deserto; e l’alterezza della sua forza verrà meno; e i monti d’Israele saranno deserti, senza che vi passi più alcuno.

29 Ed essi conosceranno che io sono il Signore, quando avrò messo il paese in desolazione, e in deserto, per tutte le loro abbominazioni, che hanno commesse.

30 Ora, quant’è a te, figliuol d’uomo, i figliuoli del tuo popolo favellan di te, presso alle pareti, e in su gli usci delle case; e parlano l’un con l’altro, ciascuno col suo fratello, dicendo: Deh! venite, e udite quale è la parola ch’è proceduta dal Signore.

31 E vengono a te, come per maniera di raunanza di popolo; e il mio popolo siede davanti a te, ed ascolta le tue parole, ma non le mette ad effetto; perciocchè egli ne fa de’ ragionamenti d’amori nella sua bocca; ma il cuor suo va dietro alla sua avarizia.

32 Ed ecco, tu sei loro a guisa d’una canzone di amori, d’uno che abbia bella voce, e suoni bene; ed essi ascoltano le tue parole, ma non le metton punto ad effetto.

33 Ma quando la cosa sarà avvenuta ecco viene!, essi conosceranno che vi è stato un profeta in mezzo di loro.

GOD'S WORD Translation GW

1 The LORD spoke his word to me. He said,

2 "Son of man, speak to your people. Tell them, 'Suppose I bring war on this country, and the people of this country choose one of their men and make him their watchman.

3 If he sees the enemy coming to attack the country, he will blow his horn to warn the people.

4 If the people hear the horn and ignore the warning and the enemy comes and takes them, they will be responsible for their own deaths.

5 They heard the sound of the horn but ignored its warning. So they are responsible for their own deaths. If they had taken the warning, they would have saved themselves.

6 "'But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn't blow his horn to warn the people and the enemy comes and kills someone, that watchman must die because of his sin. I will hold him responsible for their deaths.'

7 "Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for the people of Israel. Listen to what I say, and warn them for me.

8 Suppose I say to a wicked person, 'You wicked person, you will certainly die,' and you say nothing to warn him to change his ways. That wicked person will die because of his sin, and I will hold you responsible for his death.

9 But if you warn a wicked person to turn from his ways and he doesn't turn from them, then he will die because of his sin. However, you will save yourself.

10 "Son of man, say to the people of Israel, 'You have said this, "Our wickedness and our sins weigh us down, and we are rotting away because of them. How can we live?"'

11 "Tell them, 'As I live, declares the Almighty LORD, I don't want wicked people to die. Rather, I want them to turn from their ways and live. Change the way you think and act! Turn from your wicked ways! Do you want to die, people of Israel?'

12 "Son of man, say to your people, 'The right things that a righteous person has done will not save him when he rebels. The wicked things that a wicked person has done will not make him stumble when he turns from his wickedness. The righteous person will not live when he sins.'

13 I may promise the righteous person that he will certainly live. But if he trusts in the right things that he has done and he does evil, none of the right things that he has done will be remembered. He will die because of the evil things he has done.

14 I may warn the wicked person that he will certainly die. But suppose he turns from his sin and does what is fair and right.

15 He returns the security for a loan, pays back everything he stole, lives by the rules of life, and does nothing evil. Then he will certainly live. He will not die.

16 None of the sins that he has done will be remembered. He has done what is fair and right. He will certainly live.

17 "But your people say, 'The Lord's way is unfair.' Yet, their ways are unfair.

18 If the righteous person turns from the right things that he has done and does evil, he will die because of it.

19 If the wicked person turns from his wickedness and does what is fair and right, he will live because of it.

20 Yet, the people of Israel say, 'The Lord's way is unfair.' I will judge each of you by your own ways, people of Israel."

21 On the fifth day of the tenth month in the twelfth year of our captivity, a refugee from Jerusalem came to me. He said, "The city has been captured."

22 The evening before the refugee arrived, the power of the LORD came over me. On the morning the refugee arrived, the LORD made me speak. So I spoke, and I was no longer quiet.

23 The LORD spoke his word to me. He said,

24 "Son of man, those who live in the ruined cities in Israel are saying, 'Abraham was only one person, and he was given the land. But we are many. Certainly the land has been given to us.'

25 So tell them, 'This is what the Almighty LORD says: You eat meat with blood in it. You look to your idols for help. You murder people. Should the land be given to you?

26 You rely on your swords. You do disgusting things. You dishonor your neighbor's wife. Should the land be given to you?'

27 "Tell them, 'This is what the Almighty LORD says: As I live, whoever is in the ruined cities will be killed in battle. Whoever is in the open field will become food for wild animals. Whoever is in fortified places and caves will die from plagues.

28 I will turn the land into a barren wasteland. People will no longer brag about its power. The mountains of Israel will become so ruined that no one will travel through them.

29 Then people will know that I am the LORD, when I make the land a barren wasteland because of all the disgusting things that they have done.'

30 "Son of man, your people are talking about you by the walls and in the doorways of their homes. They are saying to each other, 'Let's go and hear the word that has come from the LORD.'

31 Then they come to you, as if they are still my people, and they sit down in front of you. They listen to what you say, but they don't do it. They say that they love me, but in their hearts they chase dishonest profits.

32 To them you are nothing more than a singer with a beautiful voice who sings love songs or a musician who plays an instrument. They listen to your words, but they don't do them.

33 When all your words come true--and they certainly will come true--these people will know that a prophet has been among them."
