1 El hombre y la mujer pecan<br />La serpiente era el más astuto de todos los animales salvajes que el Señor<br /> Dios había hecho. Cierto día le preguntó a la mujer:<br />—¿De veras Dios les dijo que no deben comer del fruto de ninguno de los árboles del huerto?

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 —Claro que podemos comer del fruto de los árboles del huerto —contestó la mujer—.

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3 Es solo del fruto del árbol que está en medio del huerto del que no se nos permite comer. Dios dijo: “No deben comerlo, ni siquiera tocarlo; si lo hacen, morirán”.

but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4 —¡No morirán! —respondió la serpiente a la mujer—.

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
5 Dios sabe que, en cuanto coman del fruto, se les abrirán los ojos y serán como Dios, con el conocimiento del bien y del mal.

“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 La mujer quedó convencida. Vio que el árbol era hermoso y su fruto parecía delicioso, y quiso la sabiduría que le daría. Así que tomó del fruto y lo comió. Después le dio un poco a su esposo que estaba con ella, y él también comió.

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7 En ese momento, se les abrieron los ojos, y de pronto sintieron vergüenza por su desnudez. Entonces cosieron hojas de higuera para cubrirse.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Cuando soplaba la brisa fresca de la tarde, el hombre<br /> y su esposa oyeron al Señor<br /> Dios caminando por el huerto. Así que se escondieron del Señor<br /> Dios entre los árboles.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 Entonces el Señor<br /> Dios llamó al hombre:<br />—¿Dónde estás?

But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 El hombre contestó:<br />—Te oí caminando por el huerto, así que me escondí. Tuve miedo porque estaba desnudo.

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 —¿Quién te dijo que estabas desnudo? —le preguntó el Señor<br /> Dios—. ¿Acaso has comido del fruto del árbol que te ordené que no comieras?

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 El hombre contestó:<br />—La mujer que tú me diste fue quien me dio del fruto, y yo lo comí.

The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Entonces el Señor<br /> Dios le preguntó a la mujer:<br />—¿Qué has hecho?<br />—La serpiente me engañó —contestó ella—. Por eso comí.

Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 Entonces el Señor<br /> Dios le dijo a la serpiente:<br />«Por lo que has hecho, eres maldita<br />más que todos los animales, tanto domésticos como salvajes.<br />Andarás sobre tu vientre,<br />arrastrándote por el polvo durante toda tu vida.

So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15 Y pondré hostilidad entre tú y la mujer,<br />y entre tu descendencia y la descendencia de ella.<br />Su descendiente te golpeará<br /> la cabeza,<br />y tú le golpearás el talón».

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
16 Luego le dijo a la mujer:<br />«Haré más agudo el dolor de tu embarazo,<br />y con dolor darás a luz.<br />Y desearás controlar a tu marido,<br />pero él gobernará sobre ti».

To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17 Y al hombre le dijo:<br />«Dado que hiciste caso a tu esposa y comiste del fruto del árbol<br />del que te ordené que no comieras,<br />la tierra es maldita por tu culpa.<br />Toda tu vida lucharás para poder vivir de ella.

To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
18 Te producirá espinos y cardos,<br />aunque comerás de sus granos.

It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 Con el sudor de tu frente<br />obtendrás alimento para comer<br />hasta que vuelvas a la tierra<br />de la que fuiste formado.<br />Pues fuiste hecho del polvo,<br />y al polvo volverás».

By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
20 El paraíso perdido: el juicio de Dios<br />Después, el hombre —Adán— le puso a su esposa el nombre Eva, porque ella sería la madre de todos los que viven.

Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 Y el Señor<br /> Dios hizo ropa de pieles de animales para Adán y su esposa.

The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
22 Luego el Señor<br /> Dios dijo: «Miren, los seres humanos<br /> se han vuelto como nosotros, con conocimiento del bien y del mal. ¿Y qué ocurrirá si toman el fruto del árbol de la vida y lo comen? ¡Entonces vivirán para siempre!».

And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
23 Así que el Señor<br /> Dios los expulsó del jardín de Edén y envió a Adán a cultivar la tierra de la cual él había sido formado.

So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 Después de expulsarlos, el Señor<br /> Dios puso querubines poderosos al oriente del jardín de Edén; y colocó una espada de fuego ardiente —que destellaba al moverse de un lado a otro— a fin de custodiar el camino hacia el árbol de la vida.

After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
