4 Entonces Jacob mandó llamar a Raquel y a Lea al campo donde él cuidaba el rebaño

5 y les dijo:<br />—Noto un cambio en la actitud de su padre hacia mí, pero el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo.

6 Ustedes saben con cuánto esfuerzo trabajé para su padre;

7 sin embargo, me ha estafado, cambiando mi salario diez veces. Pero Dios no le ha permitido que me haga ningún daño.

8 Pues, si él decía: “Los animales manchados serán tu salario”, todo el rebaño comenzaba a dar crías manchadas. Y cuando él cambiaba de opinión y decía: “Los animales rayados serán tu salario”, entonces todo el rebaño producía crías rayadas.

9 De esa manera, Dios ha tomado los animales de su padre y me los ha entregado a mí.

10 »En una ocasión, durante la época de apareamiento, tuve un sueño y vi que los chivos que se apareaban con las hembras eran rayados, manchados y moteados.

11 Y en mi sueño, el ángel de Dios me dijo: “¡Jacob!”. Y yo respondí: “Sí, aquí estoy”.

12 »El ángel dijo: “Levanta la vista, y verás que solamente los machos rayados, manchados y moteados se aparean con las hembras de tu rebaño. Pues he visto el modo en que Labán te ha tratado.

13 Yo soy el Dios que se te apareció en Betel,<br /> el lugar donde ungiste la columna de piedra y me hiciste el voto. Ahora prepárate, sal de este país y regresa a la tierra donde naciste”.

14 Raquel y Lea respondieron:<br />—¡Por nuestra parte está bien! De todos modos, nosotras no heredaremos nada de las riquezas de nuestro padre.

15 Él ha reducido nuestros derechos a los mismos que tienen las mujeres extranjeras, y después de habernos vendido, derrochó el dinero que tú le pagaste por nosotras.

16 Toda la riqueza que Dios le ha quitado a nuestro padre y te ha dado a ti nos pertenece legalmente a nosotras y a nuestros hijos. Así que, adelante, haz todo lo que Dios te ha dicho.

17 Entonces Jacob hizo que sus esposas y sus hijos subieran a los camellos

18 y puso en marcha a todos sus animales. Reunió todas las pertenencias que había adquirido en Padán-aram y salió hacia la tierra de Canaán, donde vivía su padre Isaac.

27 ¿Por qué huiste en secreto? ¿Por qué me engañaste? ¿Y por qué no me dijiste que querías marcharte? Yo te habría hecho una fiesta de despedida con cánticos y música, al son de panderetas y arpas.

28 ¿Por qué no me dejaste besar a mis hijas y a mis nietos, y despedirme de ellos? ¡Has actuado como un necio!

29 Yo podría destruirte, pero el Dios de tu padre se me apareció anoche y me advirtió: «¡Deja en paz a Jacob!».

30 Puedo entender que sientas que debes irte y anhelas intensamente la casa de tu padre, pero ¿por qué robaste mis dioses?

31 —Me apresuré a irme porque tuve miedo —contestó Jacob—. Pensé que me quitarías a tus hijas por la fuerza.

32 Ahora, en cuanto a tus dioses, si puedes encontrarlos, ¡que muera la persona que los haya tomado! Si encuentras alguna otra cosa que te pertenezca, identifícala delante de estos parientes nuestros, y yo te la devolveré.<br />Pero Jacob no sabía que Raquel había robado los ídolos de familia.

33 Labán fue a buscar primero en la carpa de Jacob, luego entró en la de Lea y después buscó en las carpas de las dos esposas esclavas, pero no encontró nada. Por último fue a la carpa de Raquel,

34 pero Raquel había tomado los ídolos y los había escondido en la montura de su camello, y estaba sentada encima de ellos. Cuando Labán terminó de buscar en cada rincón de la carpa sin encontrarlos,

35 ella le dijo a su padre: «Por favor, perdone, mi señor, si no me levanto ante usted. Es que estoy con mi período menstrual». Labán, pues, continuó su búsqueda, pero no pudo encontrar los ídolos de familia.

36 Entonces Jacob se enojó mucho y desafió a Labán.<br />—¿Cuál es mi delito? —preguntó él—. ¿Qué mal he hecho para que me persigas como si fuera un criminal?

37 Has registrado todas mis pertenencias. ¡Muéstrame ahora lo que hayas encontrado que sea tuyo! Ponlo aquí delante de nosotros, a la vista de nuestros parientes, para que todos lo vean. ¡Que ellos juzguen entre nosotros!

38 »Durante veinte años he estado contigo, cuidando de tus rebaños. En todo ese tiempo, tus ovejas y tus cabras nunca abortaron. En todos esos años, nunca tomé ni un solo carnero tuyo para comérmelo.

39 Si alguno de ellos era atacado por animales salvajes y moría, yo nunca te mostraba el cadáver ni te pedía que lo descontaras de tu rebaño. No, ¡yo mismo me hacía cargo de la pérdida! Tú me hacías pagar por cada animal robado, ya fuera a plena luz del día o en la oscuridad de la noche.

40 »Trabajé para ti bajo el sofocante calor del día y en el frío de la noche, sin dormir.

41 Sí, ¡durante veinte años trabajé como un esclavo en tu casa! Trabajé catorce años para ganarme a tus dos hijas y, después, seis años más por tu rebaño. ¡Y cambiaste mi salario diez veces!

42 En realidad, si el Dios de mi padre no hubiera estado de mi parte —el Dios de Abraham y el temible Dios de Isaac<br />—, tú me habrías despedido con las manos vacías. Pero Dios ha visto tu abuso y mi arduo trabajo. ¡Por eso se te apareció anoche y te reprendió!

43 Tratado de Jacob con Labán<br />Entonces Labán respondió a Jacob:<br />—Esas mujeres son mis hijas, esos niños son mis nietos, y esos rebaños son mis rebaños; de hecho, todo lo que ves es mío; pero ¿qué puedo hacer ahora respecto a mis hijas y a mis nietos?

44 Así que hagamos un pacto tú y yo, y ese pacto será un testimonio de nuestro compromiso.

45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra y la erigió como columna conmemorativa.

46 Y dijo a los miembros de su familia: «Recojan algunas piedras». Entonces ellos juntaron piedras y las apilaron. Luego Jacob y Labán se sentaron junto al montículo de piedras y compartieron una comida para celebrar el pacto.

47 Con el fin de conmemorar el suceso, Labán llamó a aquel lugar Jegar Sahaduta (que significa «montículo del testimonio» en arameo), y Jacob lo llamó Galaad (que significa «montículo del testimonio» en hebreo).

48 Entonces Labán declaró: «Este montículo de piedras quedará como testimonio para recordarnos el pacto que hemos hecho hoy». Esto explica por qué ese lugar fue llamado Galaad: «montículo del testimonio»,

49 pero también se le llamó Mizpa (que significa «torre de vigilancia»), pues Labán dijo: «Que el Señor<br /> nos vigile a los dos para cerciorarse de que guardemos este pacto cuando estemos lejos el uno del otro.

50 Si tú maltratas a mis hijas o te casas con otras mujeres, Dios lo verá aunque nadie más lo vea. Él es testigo de este pacto entre nosotros.

51 »Mira este montículo de piedras —continuó Labán— y mira esta columna conmemorativa que he levantado entre nosotros.

52 Están entre tú y yo como testigos de nuestros votos. Yo nunca cruzaré este montículo de piedras para hacerte daño, y tú nunca debes cruzar estas piedras o esta columna conmemorativa para hacerme daño.

53 Invoco al Dios de nuestros antepasados —el Dios de tu abuelo Abraham y el Dios de mi abuelo Nacor— para que sea juez entre nosotros».<br />Entonces Jacob juró, delante del temible Dios de su padre Isaac,<br /> respetar la línea fronteriza.

54 Luego Jacob ofreció un sacrificio a Dios allí en el monte e invitó a todos a un banquete para celebrar el pacto. Después de comer, pasaron la noche en el monte.

1 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”

2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.

3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were.

5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.

6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,

7 yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me.

8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked young.

9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me.

10 “In breeding season I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted.

11 The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’

12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.

13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’ ”

14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father’s estate?

15 Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.

16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you.”

17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,

18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated in Paddan Aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods.

20 Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away.

21 So he fled with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.

22 On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled.

23 Taking his relatives with him, he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”

25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too.

26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You’ve deceived me, and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.

27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels and harps?

28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing.

29 I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household. But why did you steal my gods?”

31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.

32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent.

34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel’s saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing.

35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I’m having my period.” So he searched but could not find the household gods.

36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged you that you hunt me down?

37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.

38 “I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.

39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.

40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

41 It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.

42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you.”

43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne?

44 Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.

46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.

47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.

48 Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” That is why it was called Galeed.

49 It was also called Mizpah, because he said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.

50 If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.”

51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me.

52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me.

53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.

54 He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.
