Genesis 23

MSG

NLT

1 Sarah lived 127 years.
1 When Sarah was 127 years old,
2 Sarah died in Kiriath Arba, present-day Hebron, in the land of Canaan. Abraham mourned for Sarah and wept.
2 she died at Kiriath-arba (now called Hebron) in the land of Canaan. There Abraham mourned and wept for her.
3 Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites:
3 Then, leaving her body, he said to the Hittite elders,
4 "I know I'm only an outsider here among you, but sell me a burial plot so that I can bury my dead decently.
4 “Here I am, a stranger and a foreigner among you. Please sell me a piece of land so I can give my wife a proper burial.”
5 The Hittites responded,
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham,
6 "Why, you're no mere outsider here with us, you're a prince of God! Bury your dead wife in the best of our burial sites. None of us will refuse you a place for burial."
6 “Listen, my lord, you are an honored prince among us. Choose the finest of our tombs and bury her there. No one here will refuse to help you in this way.”
7 Then Abraham got up, bowed respectfully to the people of the land, the Hittites,
7 Then Abraham bowed low before the Hittites
8 and said, "If you're serious about helping me give my wife a proper burial, intercede for me with Ephron son of Zohar.
8 and said, “Since you are willing to help me in this way, be so kind as to ask Ephron son of Zohar
9 Ask him to sell me the cave of Machpelah that he owns, the one at the end of his land. Ask him to sell it to me at its full price for a burial plot, with you as witnesses."
9 to let me buy his cave at Machpelah, down at the end of his field. I will pay the full price in the presence of witnesses, so I will have a permanent burial place for my family.”
10 Ephron was part of the local Hittite community. Then Ephron the Hittite spoke up, answering Abraham with all the Hittites who were part of the town council listening:
10 Ephron was sitting there among the others, and he answered Abraham as the others listened, speaking publicly before all the Hittite elders of the town.
11 "Oh no, my master! I couldn't do that. The field is yours - a gift. I'll give it and the cave to you. With my people as witnesses, I give it to you. Bury your deceased wife."
11 “No, my lord,” he said to Abraham, “please listen to me. I will give you the field and the cave. Here in the presence of my people, I give it to you. Go and bury your dead.”
12 Abraham bowed respectfully before the assembled council
12 Abraham again bowed low before the citizens of the land,
13 and answered Ephron: "Please allow me - I want to pay the price of the land; take my money so that I can go ahead and bury my wife."
13 and he replied to Ephron as everyone listened. “No, listen to me. I will buy it from you. Let me pay the full price for the field so I can bury my dead there.”
14 Then Ephron answered Abraham
14 Ephron answered Abraham,
15 "If you insist, master. What's four hundred silver shekels between us? Now go ahead and bury your wife."
15 “My lord, please listen to me. The land is worth 400 pieces of silver, but what is that between friends? Go ahead and bury your dead.”
16 Abraham accepted Ephron's offer and paid out the sum that Ephron had named before the town council of Hittites - four hundred silver shekels at the current exchange rate.
16 So Abraham agreed to Ephron’s price and paid the amount he had suggested—400 pieces of silver, weighed according to the market standard. The Hittite elders witnessed the transaction.
17 That's how Ephron's field next to Mamre - the field, its cave, and all the trees within its borders -
17 So Abraham bought the plot of land belonging to Ephron at Machpelah, near Mamre. This included the field itself, the cave that was in it, and all the surrounding trees.
18 became Abraham's property. The town council of Hittites witnessed the transaction.
18 It was transferred to Abraham as his permanent possession in the presence of the Hittite elders at the city gate.
19 Abraham then proceeded to bury his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah that is next to Mamre, present-day Hebron, in the land of Canaan
19 Then Abraham buried his wife, Sarah, there in Canaan, in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre (also called Hebron).
20 The field and its cave went from the Hittites into Abraham's possession as a burial plot.
20 So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place.
