1 COSÌ ha detto il Signore: Scendi nella casa del re di Giuda, e pronunzia quivi questa parola, e di’:

2 Ascolta la parola del Signore o re di Giuda, che siedi sopra il trono di Davide; tu, e i tuoi servitori, e il tuo popolo ch’entrate per queste porte.

3 Così ha detto il Signore: Fate giudicio e giustizia; e riscotete di man dell’oppressore colui a cui è tolto il suo: e non fate torto al forestiere, nè all’orfano, nè alla vedova; non fate violenza, e non ispandete sangue innocente in questo luogo.

4 Perciocchè, se pur mettete ad affetto questa parola, i re del legnaggio di Davide, che seggono sopra il suo trono, entreranno per le porte di questa Casa, montati sopra carri, e sopra cavalli, essi, ed i lor servitori, ed il lor popolo.

5 Ma se voi non ascoltate queste parole, io giuro per me stesso, dice il Signore, che questa Casa sarà messa in desolazione.

6 Perciocchè, così ha detto il Signore intorno alla casa del re di Giuda: Tu mi sei stata come Galaad, come la sommità del Libano; se io non ti riduco in deserto, in città disabitate.

7 Io ordinerò contro a te de’ guastatori, che avranno ciascuno le sue armi; e taglieranno la scelta de’ tuoi cedri, e li gitteranno nel fuoco.

8 E molte genti passeranno presso di questa città, e diranno l’uno all’altro: Perchè ha il Signore fatto così a cotesta gran città?

9 E si dirà: Perciocchè hanno lasciato il patto del Signore Iddio loro, ed hanno adorati altri dii, ed hanno lor servito.

10 Non piangete per lo morto, e non ve ne condolete; piangete pur per quel che se ne va via; perciocchè egli non ritornerà più, e non vedrà più il suo natio paese.

11 Perciocchè il Signore ha detto così di Sallum, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, che ha regnato in luogo di Giosia, suo padre, ed è uscito di questo luogo: Egli non vi ritornerà più;

12 anzi morrà nel luogo dove è stato menato in cattività, e non vedrà più questo paese.

13 Guai a colui ch’edifica la sua casa, e non con giustizia; e le sue sale, e non con dirittura; che si serve del suo prossimo per nulla, e non gli dà il pagamento dell’opera sua; che dice:

14 Io mi edificherò una casa grande, e delle sale spaziose; e taglia a quelle delle finestre larghe, e la fa tavolata di cedri, e la dipinge di minio!

15 Regnerai tu perchè cerchi d’eccellere co’ cedri? non mangiò, e non bevve tuo padre, facendo ciò ch’è diritto, e giusto? ed allora bene gli avvenne.

16 Egli fece ragione al povero ed al bisognoso: ed allora bene gli avvenne; non è ciò conoscermi? dice il Signore.

17 Ma tu non hai gli occhi, nè il cuore, se non alla tua avarizia, ed a spandere il sangue innocente, e ad oppressione, ed a storsione, per farla.

18 Perciò, il Signore ha detto così di Gioiachim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda: Ei non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: Ahi fratel mio! Ahi sorella! Ei non se ne farà altresì cordoglio, dicendo: Ahi Signore! e: Ahi sua maestà!

19 Egli sarà seppellito della sepoltura di un asino, essendo strascinato, e gettato via lungi dalle porte di Gerusalemme.

20 Sali pure in sul Libano, e grida; e da’ fuori la tua voce in Basan, e grida a quelli che sono di là; perciocchè tutti i tuoi amanti sono stati rotti.

21 Io ti ho parlato nelle tue prosperità; ma tu hai detto: Io non ascolterò; questa è stata la tua usanza fin dalla tua fanciullezza, che tu non hai giammai ascoltata la mia voce.

22 Il vento si pascerà di tutti i tuoi pastori, ed i tuoi amanti andranno in cattività; allora sarai pure svergognata e confusa, per tutta la tua malvagità.

23 Tu dimori nel Libano, tu ti annidi sopra i cedri; oh! quanto sarai graziosa, quando ti verranno le doglie del parto; i dolori, come di donna che partorisce!

24 Come io vivo, dice il Signore, avvegnachè tu, Conia, figliuolo di Gioiachim, re di Giuda, fossi un suggello nella mia man destra, pur te ne divellerò;

25 e ti darò in man di quelli che cercano l’anima tua, e in man di quelli de’ quali tu hai spavento, e in man di Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, e in man de’ Caldei.

26 E caccerò te, e tua madre che ti ha partorito, in un paese strano, dove non siete nati; e quivi morrete.

27 E quant’è al paese, al quale essi hanno l’animo intento, per tornarvi, non vi torneranno.

28 È quest’uomo Conia un idolo sprezzato, e rotto in pezzi? è egli un vaso, del quale non si fa stima alcuna? perchè dunque sono stati cacciati egli, e la sua progenie, e gettati in un paese, che non conoscono?

29 O paese, o paese, o paese, ascolta la parola del Signore!

30 Così ha detto il Signore: Scrivete pure che quest’uomo sarà privo di figliuoli, e sarà uomo che non prospererà a’ suoi dì; e che niuno della sua progenie prospererà, sedendo sopra il trono di Davide, e signoreggiando per l’innanzi sopra Giuda.

1 This is what the LORD says: Go to the palace of the king of Judah, and speak this message there:

2 "Listen to the word of the LORD, you officials, you people who come into these gates, and you, king of Judah, the one sitting on David's throne.

3 "This is what the LORD says: Judge fairly, and do what is right. Rescue those who have been robbed from those who oppress them. Don't mistreat foreigners, orphans, or widows, and don't oppress them. Don't kill innocent people in this place.

4 If you do what I say, then the kings who sit on David's throne will ride through the gates of this palace in chariots and on horses along with their officials and their people.

5 But if you don't do what I say, I will take an oath on myself," declares the LORD, "that this palace will become a pile of rubble.

6 "This is what the LORD says about the palace of the king of Judah: This palace is like Gilead to me, like the top of Lebanon. I will certainly turn it into a desert, into cities that no one lives in.

7 I will send people to destroy you. They will have their own weapons. They will cut down your finest cedar trees and throw them on a fire.

8 "People from many nations will pass by this city and ask each other, 'Why has the LORD done this to this important city?'

9 The answer will be: 'They rejected the promise of the LORD their God. They worshiped other gods and served them.'"

10 Don't cry for the dead. Don't shake your heads at them. Cry bitterly for those who are taken away, because they won't come back to see their homeland.

11 This is what the LORD says about King Josiah's son Shallum, who succeeded his father as king of Judah and left this place: He will never come back here again.

12 He will die in the place where he was taken captive, and he will never see this land again.

13 "How horrible it will be for the person who builds his house dishonestly and his upper rooms through injustice. He makes his neighbors work for nothing and doesn't pay them for their work.

14 He says, 'I will build a large house for myself with big upper rooms.' He cuts out windows in it, panels the rooms with cedar, and paints them red.

15 Do you think you're a better king than others because you use more cedar? Your father ate and drank and did what is fair and right. Everything went well for him.

16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy. Everything went well for him. Isn't this what it means to know me?" asks the LORD.

17 "But your eyes and your mind are set on nothing but dishonest profits. You kill innocent people and violently oppress your people."

18 This is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim, son of Judah's King Josiah: People won't mourn for him and say, "How horrible it is for my brother and sister!" They won't mourn for him and say, "How horrible it is for my master and his splendor!"

19 He will receive a donkey's burial. He will be dragged off and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem.

20 "Go to Lebanon and cry! Raise your voice in Bashan! Cry out from Abarim, because all your lovers are defeated."

21 I spoke to you when you were prosperous, but you said that you wouldn't listen. This is how you've been ever since you were young. You don't listen to me.

22 The wind will blow away all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced by all your wickedness.

23 You live in Lebanon and have your nest in the cedars. But you will groan when pain strikes you, pain like a woman giving birth to a child.

24 "As I live," declares the LORD, "even though you, Jehoiakin, son of Judah's King Jehoiakim, are the signet ring on my right hand, I will pull you off my hand.

25 I will hand you over to those who want to kill you, those you fear--King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians.

26 I will throw you and your mother into another land. You weren't born there, but you will die there.

27 You will want to return to this land, but you won't be allowed to come home."

28 This Jehoiakin is like a rejected and broken pot that no one wants. Is that why he and his descendants will be thrown out and cast into another land they've never heard of?

29 O land, land, land! Listen to the word of the LORD.

30 This is what the LORD says: Write this about Jehoiakin: He will be childless. He won't prosper in his lifetime. None of his descendants will succeed him as king. They won't sit on David's throne and rule Judah again.
