1 LA parola, che fu dal Signore indirizzata a Geremia, allora che Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, e tutto il suo esercito, tutti i regni della terra, sottoposti al suo imperio, e tutti i popoli, combattevano contro a Gerusalemme, e contro a tutte le sue città, dicendo:

2 Così ha detto il Signore Iddio d’Israele: Va’, e parla a Sedechia, re di Giuda, e digli: Così ha detto il Signore: Ecco, io do questa città in man del re di Babilonia, ed egli l’arderà col fuoco,

3 e tu non iscamperai dalla sua mano; perciocchè per certo sarai preso, e sarai dato in man sua, e vedrai il re di Babilonia a faccia a faccia, ed egli ti parlerà a bocca a bocca, e tu verrai in Babilonia.

4 Ma pure, o Sedechia, re di Giuda, ascolta la parola del Signore: Il Signore ha detto così di te: Tu non morrai per la spada.

5 Tu morrai in pace, e ti saranno arsi aromati, come si è fatto a’ tuoi padri, i re precedenti, che sono stati avanti te; e si farà cordoglio di te, dicendo: Ahi Signore! perciocchè io ho pronunziata la parola, dice il Signore.

6 E il profeta Geremia pronunziò a Sedechia, re di Giuda, tutte queste parole, in Gerusalemme.

7 Or l’esercito del re di Babilonia combatteva contro a Gerusalemme, e contro a tutte le città di Giuda, ch’erano rimaste, cioè, contro a Lachis, ed Azeca; perciocchè quelle sole ch’erano città forti, erano rimaste d’infra le città.

8 LA parola che fu dal Signore indirizzata a Geremia, dopo che il re Sedechia ebbe fatto patto con tutto il popolo ch’era in Gerusalemme, di bandir loro libertà;

9 per fare che ciascuno rimandasse in libertà il suo servo, e la sua serva, Ebreo, ed Ebrea; acciocchè niuno tenesse più in servitù alcun suo fratello Giudeo.

10 Or tutti i principi, e tutto il popolo che si erano convenuti in questo patto, di rimandare in libertà ciascuno il suo servo, e la sua serva, per non tenerli più in servitù, ubbidirono, e li rimandarono.

11 Ma poi appresso fecero di nuovo tornare i servi, e le serve, che aveano rimandati in libertà, e li sforzarono ad esser loro servi, e serve.

12 Laonde la parola del Signore fu dal Signore indirizzata a Geremia, dicendo:

13 Così ha detto il Signore, l’Iddio d’Israele: Io feci patto co’ padri vostri, quando li trassi fuor del paese di Egitto, della casa di servitù, dicendo:

14 Al termine di sette anni rimandi ciascun di voi il suo fratello Ebreo, che si sarà venduto a te; servati sei anni, poi rimandalo in libertà d’appresso a te; ma i vostri padri non mi hanno ubbidito, e non hanno inchinato il loro orecchio.

15 Or voi vi eravate oggi convertiti, ed avevate fatto ciò che mi piace, in bandir libertà ciascuno al suo prossimo; e avevate fatto patto nel mio cospetto, nella Casa che si chiama del mio Nome.

16 Ma voi vi siete rivolti, ed avete profanato il mio Nome, e ciascun di voi ha fatto ritornare il suo servo, e la sua serva, che voi avevate rimandati in libertà, a lor volontà; e li avete sforzati ad esservi servi e serve.

17 Perciò, così ha detto il Signore: Voi non mi avete ubbidito, per bandir libertà ciascuno al suo fratello, e ciascuno al suo prossimo; ecco, io vi bandisco libertà, dice il Signore, alla spada, alla pestilenza, ed alla fame; e farò che sarete agitati per tutti i regni della terra.

18 E darò gli uomini che han trasgredito il mio patto, e non han messe ad effetto le parole del patto che aveano fatto nel mio cospetto, passando in mezzo delle parti del vitello che aveano tagliato in due, cioè:

19 i principi di Giuda, ed i principi di Gerusalemme, e gli eunuchi, e i sacerdoti, e tutto il popolo del paese, che son passati in mezzo delle parti del vitello;

20 li darò, dico, in man de’ lor nemici, e in man di quelli che cercano l’anima loro; e i lor corpi morti saran per pasto agli uccelli del cielo, ed alle bestie della terra.

21 Darò eziandio Sedechia, re di Giuda, e i suoi principi, in mano de’ loro nemici, e in man di quelli che cercano l’anima loro, e in man dell’esercito del re di Babilonia, che si è ora ritratto da voi.

22 Ecco, io do loro comandamento, dice il Signore; e li farò ritornare a questa città, ed essi la combatteranno, e la prenderanno, e l’arderanno col fuoco; io metterò eziandio in desolazione le città di Giuda, sì che niuno abiterà in esse.

1 The LORD spoke his word to Jeremiah when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his entire army, and all the kingdoms and people that he ruled were attacking Jerusalem and all its cities. He said,

2 "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: Go to King Zedekiah of Judah, and tell him, 'The LORD says: I'm going to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.

3 You will not escape from him. You will certainly be captured and handed over to him. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will talk to you face to face. Then you will go to Babylon.

4 "'Listen to the word of the LORD, King Zedekiah of Judah. This is what the LORD says about you: You will not die in war.

5 You will die peacefully. People will burn [funeral] fires for you as they did for your ancestors, the kings who lived before you. They will say, "Oh, master," as they mourn for you. I have spoken my word, declares the LORD.'"

6 The prophet Jeremiah told all these things to King Zedekiah of Judah in Jerusalem.

7 He did this when the army of the king of Babylon was attacking Jerusalem and the cities of Lachish and Azekah. These were the only fortified cities of Judah that were left.

8 The LORD spoke his word to Jeremiah after King Zedekiah and all the people in Jerusalem promised to free their slaves.

9 Everyone was supposed to free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female. No one was supposed to keep another Jew as a slave.

10 All the officials and all the people agreed and promised to free their male and female slaves and not to keep them as slaves anymore. So they set them free.

11 But afterwards, they changed their minds and took back the men and women they had freed and made them their slaves again.

12 The LORD spoke his word to Jeremiah. He said,

13 "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: I put a condition on the promise I made to your ancestors when I brought them from Egypt, where they were slaves. I said,

14 'Every seven years each of you must free any Hebrews who sold themselves to you. When they have served you for six years, you must set them free.' But your ancestors refused to obey me or listen to me.

15 Recently, you changed and did what I consider right. You agreed to free your neighbors, and you made a promise in my presence, in the temple that is called by my name.

16 Now you have changed again and dishonored me. You brought back the male and female slaves that you had set free to live their own lives. You have forced them to be your male and female slaves again.

17 "This is what the LORD says: You didn't obey me. You haven't freed your relatives and neighbors. Now I am going to free you," declares the LORD. "I will free you to die in wars, plagues, and famines. I will make all the kingdoms of the world horrified at the thought of you.

18 I will hand over the people who have rejected my promise. They have not kept the terms of the promise which they made in my presence when they cut a calf in two and passed between its pieces.

19 I will hand over the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the palace officials, the priests, and all the common people who passed between the pieces of the calf.

20 I will hand them over to their enemies who want to kill them, and their corpses will be food for birds and wild animals.

21 I will hand King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials over to their enemies who want to kill them and to the army of the king of Babylon, the army that has withdrawn from you.

22 I am going to give a command," declares the LORD. "I will bring that army back to this city to attack it, capture it, and burn it down. I will destroy the cities of Judah so that no one will live there."
