1 NELL’anno nono di Sedechia, re di Giuda, nel decimo mese, Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, venne con tutto il suo esercito, sopra Gerusalemme, e l’assediò.

2 Nell’anno undecimo di Sedechia, nel quarto mese, nel nono giorno del mese, i Caldei penetrarono dentro alla città.

3 E tutti i capitani del re di Babilonia vi entrarono, e si fermarono alla porta di mezzo, cioè: Nergal-sareser, Samgar-nebu, Sarsechim, Rab-saris, Nergal-sareser, Rab-mag, e tutti gli altri capitani del re di Babilonia.

4 E quando Sedechia, re di Giuda, e tutta la gente di guerra, li ebber veduti, se ne fuggirono, e uscirono di notte della città, traendo verso l’orto del re, per la porta d’infra le due mura; e il re uscì traendo verso il deserto.

5 Ma l’esercito de’ Caldei li perseguitò, e raggiunse Sedechia nelle campagne di Gerico; e lo presero, e lo menarono a Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, in Ribla, nel paese di Hamat; e quivi egli gli pronunziò la sua sentenza.

6 E il re di Babilonia fece scannare i figliuoli di Sedechia in Ribla, in sua presenza; fece eziandio scannare tutti i nobili di Giuda.

7 Poi fece abbacinar gli occhi a Sedechia, e lo fece legar di due catene di rame, per menarlo in Babilonia.

8 E i Caldei arsero col fuoco la casa del re, e le case del popolo e disfecero le mura di Gerusalemme.

9 E Nebuzaradan, capitano delle guardie, menò in cattività in Babilonia il rimanente del popolo ch’era restato nella città; e quelli che si erano andati ad arrendere a lui, e tutto l’altro popolo ch’era restato.

10 Ma Nebuzaradan, capitano delle guardie, lasciò nel paese di Giuda i più poveri d’infra il popolo, i quali non avevano nulla; e diede loro in quel giorno vigne e campi.

11 Or Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, aveva data commessione a Nebuzaradan, capitano delle guardie, intorno a Geremia, dicendo:

12 Prendilo, ed abbi cura di lui, e non fargli alcun male; anzi fa’ inverso lui come egli ti dirà.

13 Nebuzaradan adunque, capitano delle guardie, e Nebusazban, Rab-saris, Nergal-sareser, Rab-mag, e tutti gli altri capitani del re di Babilonia,

14 mandarono a far trarre Geremia fuor delle corte della prigione, e lo diedero a Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahicam, figliuolo di Safan, per condurlo fuori in casa sua. Ma egli dimorò per mezzo il popolo.

15 Or la parola del Signore era stata indirizzata a Geremia, mentre egli era rinchiuso nella corte della prigione, dicendo:

16 Va’ e parla ad Ebed-malec Etiopo, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signor degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io fo venire le mie parole contro a questa città, in male, e non in bene; e in quel giorno esse avverranno nella tua presenza.

17 Ma in quel giorno io ti libererò, dice il Signore; e tu non sarai dato in man degli uomini, de’ quali tu temi.

18 Perciocchè io ti scamperò di certo, e tu non caderai per la spada; e l’anima tua ti sarà per ispoglia; conciossiachè tu ti sii confidato in me, dice il Signore.

1 In the tenth month of Zedekiah's ninth year as king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked Jerusalem with his entire army and blockaded it.

2 On the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year as king, they broke into the city.

3 Then all the officers of the king of Babylon came in and sat in Middle Gate: Nergal (the quartermaster), Samgar Nebo (the chief officer), Nergal (the quartermaster and the chief fortuneteller), and all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon.

4 When King Zedekiah of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls, and they took the road to the plain [of Jericho].

5 The Babylonian army pursued them and caught up with Zedekiah in the plain of Jericho. They arrested him and brought him to Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah in the territory of Hamath. The king of Babylon passed sentence on him.

6 The king of Babylon slaughtered Zedekiah's sons as Zedekiah watched at Riblah. He also slaughtered all the leaders of Judah.

7 Then he blinded Zedekiah, put him in bronze shackles, and took him to Babylon.

8 The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the people's homes, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

9 Nebuzaradan, Babylon's captain of the guard, captured the few people left in the city, those who surrendered to him, and the rest of the people.

10 But Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left some poor people who had nothing in the land of Judah. At that time he gave them vineyards and farms.

11 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon gave Nebuzaradan an order concerning Jeremiah. He said,

12 "Take him, and look after him. Don't harm him in any way, but do for him whatever he asks."

13 Nebuzaradan (the captain of the guard), Nebushazban (the chief official), Nergal (the quartermaster and the chief fortuneteller), and all the other leaders of the king of Babylon sent for Jeremiah.

14 They took Jeremiah out of the courtyard of the prison and handed him over to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, to take him home. So he lived among the people.

15 While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the prison, the LORD spoke his word to him. The LORD said,

16 "Say to Ebed Melech from Sudan, 'This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I'm going to carry out my threat against this city by bringing disaster on it instead of prosperity. At that time these things will happen as you watch.

17 But at that time I will rescue you, declares the LORD. You will not be handed over to those you fear.

18 I will certainly rescue you. You will not die in war. You will escape with your life because you trusted me, declares the LORD.'"
