1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose e disse:

2 Deve un uomo savio pronunziare opinioni vane, Ed empiersi il ventre di vento orientale?

3 Ed argomentar con parole inutili, E con ragionamenti onde non può trarre alcun vantaggio?

4 Sì certo, tu annulli il timor di Dio, Ed impedisci l’orazione che deve farsi davanti a lui.

5 Perciocchè la tua bocca dimostra la tua iniquità, Poichè tu hai scelto il parlar de’ frodolenti.

6 La tua bocca ti condanna, e non io; E le tue labbra testificano contro a te.

7 Sei tu il primiero uomo che sia nato nel mondo? O sei tu stato formato avanti i colli?

8 Hai tu udito il segreto di Dio, E ne hai tu sottratta a te la sapienza?

9 Che sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che intendi tu, che non sia appo noi?

10 Fra noi vi è eziandio alcun canuto, alcun molto vecchio, Più attempato che tuo padre.

11 Son le consolazioni di Dio troppo poca cosa per te? Hai tu alcuna cosa riposta appo te?

12 Perchè ti trasporta il cuor tuo? E perchè ammiccano gli occhi tuoi,

13 Che tu rivolga il tuo soffio, E proferisca della tua bocca parole contro a Dio?

14 Che cosa è l’uomo, ch’egli sia puro? E che cosa è chi è nato di donna, ch’egli sia giusto?

15 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi santi, Ed i cieli non son puri nel suo cospetto;

16 Quanto più abbominevole e puzzolente È l’uomo, che beve l’iniquità come acqua?

17 Io ti dichiarerò, ascoltami pure, E ti racconterò ciò che io ho veduto;

18 Il che i savi hanno narrato, E non l’hanno celato, avendolo ricevuto da’ padri loro;

19 A’ quali soli la terra fu data, E per mezzo i cui paesi non passò mai straniero.

20 L’empio è tormentato tutti i giorni della sua vita; Ed al violento è riposto un piccol numero d’anni.

21 Egli ha negli orecchi un romor di spaventi; In tempo di pace il guastatore gli sopraggiunge.

22 Egli non si fida punto di potere uscir delle tenebre; Egli sta sempre in guato, aspettando la spada.

23 Egli va tapinando per cercar dove sia del pane; Egli sa che ha in mano tutto presto il giorno delle tenebre.

24 Angoscia e tribolazione lo spaventano; Lo sopraffanno come un re apparecchiato alla battaglia.

25 Perciocchè egli ha distesa la sua mano contro a Dio, E si è rinforzato contro all’Onnipotente;

26 E gli è corso col collo fermo, Co’ suoi spessi e rilevati scudi;

27 Perciocchè egli ha coperto il suo viso di grasso, Ed ha fatte delle pieghe sopra i suoi fianchi;

28 Ed è abitato in città desolate, in case disabitate, Ch’erano preste ad esser ridotte in monti di ruine.

29 Egli non arricchirà, e le sue facoltà non saranno stabili, E il suo colmo non si spanderà nella terra.

30 Egli non si dipartirà giammai dalle tenebre, La fiamma seccherà i suoi rampolli, Ed egli sarà portato via dal soffio della bocca di Dio.

31 Non confidisi già nella vanità, dalla quale è sedotto; Perciocchè egli muterà stato, e sarà ridotto al niente.

32 Questo mutamento si compierà fuor del suo tempo, E i suoi rami non verdeggeranno.

33 Il suo agresto sarà rapito come quel d’una vigna, E le sue gemme saranno sbattute come quelle di un ulivo.

34 Perciocchè la raunanza de’ profani sarà deserta, E il fuoco divorerà i tabernacoli di quelli che prendon presenti;

35 I quali concepiscono perversità, e partoriscono iniquità, E il cui ventre macchina fraude.

1 Empty words, Job!

2 Empty words!

3 No one who is wise would talk the way you do or defend himself with such meaningless words.

4 If you had your way, no one would fear God; no one would pray to him.

5 Your wickedness is evident by what you say; you are trying to hide behind clever words.

6 There is no need for me to condemn you; you are condemned by every word you speak.

7 Do you think you were the first person born? Were you there when God made the mountains?

8 Did you overhear the plans God made? Does human wisdom belong to you alone?

9 There is nothing you know that we don't know.

10 We learned our wisdom from gray-haired people - those born before your father.

11 God offers you comfort; why still reject it? We have spoken for him with calm, even words.

12 But you are excited and glare at us in anger.

13 You are angry with God and denounce him.

14 Can any human being be really pure? Can anyone be right with God?

15 Why, God does not trust even his angels; even they are not pure in his sight.

16 And we drink evil as if it were water; yes, we are corrupt; we are worthless.

17 Now listen, Job, to what I know.

18 Those who are wise have taught me truths which they learned from their ancestors, and they kept no secrets hidden.

19 Their land was free from foreigners; there was no one to lead them away from God.

20 The wicked who oppress others will be in torment as long as they live.

21 Voices of terror will scream in their ears, and robbers attack when they think they are safe.

22 They have no hope of escaping from darkness, for somewhere a sword is waiting to kill them,

23 and vultures are waiting to eat their corpses. They know their future is dark;

24 disaster, like a powerful king, is waiting to attack them.

25 That is the fate of those who shake their fists at God and defy the Almighty.

26 They are proud and rebellious; they stubbornly hold up their shields and rush to fight against God.

28 They are the ones who captured cities and seized houses whose owners had fled, but war will destroy those cities and houses.

29 They will not remain rich for long; nothing they own will last. Even their shadows will vanish,

30 and they will not escape from darkness. They will be like trees whose branches are burned by fire, whose blossoms are blown away by the wind.

31 If they are foolish enough to trust in evil, then evil will be their reward.

32 Before their time is up they will wither, wither like a branch and never be green again.

33 They will be like vines that lose their unripe grapes; like olive trees that drop their blossoms.

34 There will be no descendants for godless people, and fire will destroy the homes built by bribery.

35 These are the ones who plan trouble and do evil; their hearts are always full of deceit.
