1 ED Elihu proseguì a parlare, e disse:

2 Voi savi, udite i miei ragionamenti; E voi intendenti, porgetemi l’orecchio.

3 Perciocchè l’orecchio esamina i ragionamenti, Come il palato assapora ciò che si deve mangiare.

4 Proponiamoci la dirittura, Giudichiamo fra noi che cosa sia bene.

5 Conciossiachè Giobbe abbia detto: Io son giusto; Iddio mi ha tolta la mia ragione.

6 Mentirei io intorno alla mia ragione? La saetta, con la quale son ferito, è dolorosissima, Senza che vi sia misfatto in me.

7 Quale è l’uomo simile a Giobbe, Che beve lo scherno come acqua?

8 E che cammina in compagnia con gli operatori d’iniquità, E va con gli uomini empi?

9 Perciocchè egli ha detto: L’uomo non fa niun profitto Di rendersi grato a Dio.

10 Perciò, uomini di senno, ascoltatemi; Tolga Iddio che vi sia empietà in Dio, O perversità nell’Onnipotente.

11 Perciocchè egli rende all’uomo secondo l’opera sua, E fa trovare a ciascuno secondo la sua via.

12 Sì veramente Iddio non opera empiamente, E l’Onnipotente non perverte la ragione.

13 Chi gli ha commesso il governo della terra? E chi gli ha imposta la cura del mondo tutto intiero?

14 Se egli ponesse mente all’uomo, Egli ritrarrebbe a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio;

15 Ogni carne insieme trapasserebbe, E l’uomo ritornerebbe nella polvere.

16 Se pur tu hai del senno, ascolta questo; Porgi l’orecchio alla voce de’ miei ragionamenti.

17 Di vero, colui che odia la dirittura signoreggerebbe egli? E condannerai tu colui che è sommamente giusto?

18 Direbbesi egli ad un re: Scellerato? E a’ principi: Empio?

19 Quanto meno a colui che non ha riguardo alla qualità de’ principi, Ed appo cui non è riconosciuto il possente, Per essere antiposto al povero, Perchè essi tutti sono opera delle sue mani?

20 Essi muoiono in un momento, E di mezza notte tutto un popolo è conquassato, e perisce; E il potente è tolto via senza opera di mani.

21 Perciocchè gli occhi suoi son sopra le vie dell’uomo, Ed egli vede tutti i passi di esso.

22 Non vi è oscurità, nè ombra di morte alcuna, Ove si possan nascondere gli operatori d’iniquità.

23 Perciocchè Iddio non ha più riguardo all’uomo, Quando esso è per venire in giudicio davanti a lui.

24 Egli fiacca i possenti incomprensibilmente, E ne costituisce altri in luogo loro.

25 Perciò, conoscendo egli le opere loro, Nel girar d’una notte son fiaccati,

26 Egli li sbatte come empi, In luogo di molti spettatori;

27 Perciocchè si son rivolti indietro da lui, E non hanno considerate tutte le sue vie;

28 Facendo pervenire infino a lui il grido del povero, E facendogli udire lo strido degli afflitti.

29 Se egli rimanda in pace, chi condannerà? E se nasconde la sua faccia, chi lo riguarderà? O sia una nazione intiera, o un uomo solo;

30 Acciocchè l’uomo profano non regni più E che il popolo non sia più tenuto ne’ lacci.

31 Certo ei ti si conveniva indirizzarti a Dio, dicendo: Io ho portato la pena; io non peccherò più.

32 Se vi è alcuna cosa, oltre a ciò che io veggo, mostramelo; Se io ho operato perversamente, io non continuerò più.

33 Vorresti tu, ch’egli ti facesse la retribuzione di ciò ch’è proceduto da te? Sei tu che rifiuti ed eleggi, non già io; Di’ pure ciò che tu sai.

34 Gli uomini di senno diranno meco, E l’uomo savio mi acconsentirà,

35 Che Giobbe non parla con conoscimento, E che le sue parole non sono con intendimento.

36 O padre mio, sia pur Giobbe provato infino all’ultimo, Per cagione delle sue repliche, simili a quelle degli uomini iniqui.

37 Perciocchè altrimenti egli aggiungerà misfatto al suo peccato, Si batterà a palme fra noi, E moltiplicherà le parole sue contro a Dio.

Good News Translation GNT

1 You men are so wise, so clever; listen now to what I am saying.

3 You know good food when you taste it, but not wise words when you hear them.

4 It is up to us to decide the case.

5 Job claims that he is innocent, that God refuses to give him justice.

6 He asks, "How could I lie and say I am wrong? I am fatally wounded, but I am sinless."

7 Have you ever seen anyone like this man Job? He never shows respect for God.

8 He likes the company of evil people and goes around with sinners.

9 He says that it never does any good to try to follow God's will.

10 Listen to me, you men who understand! Will Almighty God do what is wrong?

11 He rewards people for what they do and treats them as they deserve.

12 Almighty God does not do evil; he is never unjust to anyone.

13 Did God get his power from someone else? Did someone put him in charge of the world?

14 If God took back the breath of life,

15 then everyone living would die and turn into dust again.

16 Now listen to me, if you are wise.

17 Are you condemning the righteous God? Do you think that [he ]hates justice?

18 God condemns kings and rulers when they are worthless or wicked.

19 He does not take the side of rulers nor favor the rich over the poor, for he created everyone.

20 We may suddenly die at night. God strikes us down and we perish; he kills the mighty with no effort at all.

21 He watches every step we take.

22 There is no darkness dark enough to hide a sinner from God.

23 God does not need to set a time for us to go and be judged by him.

24 He does not need an investigation to remove leaders and replace them with others.

25 Because he knows what they do; he overthrows them and crushes them by night.

26 He punishes sinners where all can see it,

27 because they have stopped following him and ignored all his commands.

28 They forced the poor to cry out to God, and he heard their calls for help.

29 If God decided to do nothing at all, no one could criticize him. If he hid his face, we would be helpless.

30 There would be nothing that nations could do to keep godless oppressors from ruling them.

31 Job, have you confessed your sins to God and promised not to sin again?

32 Have you asked God to show you your faults, and have you agreed to stop doing evil?

33 Since you object to what God does, can you expect him to do what you want? The decision is yours, not mine; tell us now what you think.

34 Any sensible person will surely agree; and the wise who hear me will say

35 that Job is speaking from ignorance and that nothing he says makes sense.

36 Think through everything that Job says; you will see that he talks like an evil man.

37 To his sins he adds rebellion; in front of us all he mocks God.
