1 ED Elihu proseguì il suo ragionamento, e disse:

It is not right, Job, for you to say that you are innocent in God's sight,
2 Hai tu stimato che ciò convenga alla ragione, Della quale tu hai detto: La mia giustizia è da Dio,
3 Di dire: Che mi gioverà ella? Che profitto ne avrò più che del mio peccato?

or to ask God, "How does my sin affect you? What have I gained by not sinning?"
4 Io ti risponderò, Ed a’ tuoi compagni teco.

I am going to answer you and your friends too.
5 Riguarda i cieli, e vedi; E mira le nuvole, quanto sono più alte di te.

Look at the sky! See how high the clouds are!
6 Se tu pecchi, che cosa opererai tu contro a lui? E se i tuoi misfatti son moltiplicati, che gli farai tu?

If you sin, that does no harm to God. If you do wrong many times, does that affect him?
7 Se tu sei giusto, che cosa gli darai? Ovvero che prenderà egli dalla tua mano?

Do you help God by being so righteous? There is nothing God needs from you.
8 Come la tua malvagità può nuocer solo ad un uomo simile a te, Così anche la tua giustizia non può giovare se non ad un figliuolo d’uomo.

Others suffer from your sins, and the good you do helps them.
9 Gli oppressati gridano per la grandezza dell’oppressione, E dànno alte strida per la violenza de’ grandi;

When people are oppressed, they groan; they cry for someone to save them.
10 Ma niuno dice: Ove è Dio, mio fattore, Il quale dà materia di cantar di notte?

But they don't turn to God, their Creator, who gives them hope in their darkest hours.
11 Il qual ci ammaestra più che le bestie della terra, E ci rende savi più che gli uccelli del cielo?

They don't turn to God, who makes us wise, wiser than any animal or bird.
12 Quivi adunque gridano, ed egli non li esaudisce, Per la superbia de’ malvagi.

They cry for help, but God doesn't answer, for they are proud and evil.
13 Certamente Iddio non esaudisce la vanità, E l’Onnipotente non la riguarda.

It is useless for them to cry out; Almighty God does not see or hear them.
14 Quanto meno esaudirà egli te, che dici che tu nol riguardi? Giudicati nel suo cospetto, e poi aspettalo.

Job, you say you can't see God; but wait patiently - your case is before him.
15 Certo ora quello che l’ira sua ti ha imposto di castigo è come nulla; Ed egli non ha preso conoscenza della moltitudine de’ tuoi peccati molto innanzi.

You think that God does not punish, that he pays little attention to sin.
16 Giobbe adunque indarno apre la sua bocca, Ed accumula parole senza conoscimento.

It is useless for you to go on talking; it is clear you don't know what you are saying.
