1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose, e disse:

Job, will you be annoyed if I speak?
2 Se noi imprendiamo a parlarti, ti sarà egli molesto? Ma pur chi potrebbe rattener le parole?

I can't keep quiet any longer.
3 Ecco, tu correggevi molti, E rinforzavi le mani rimesse.
3
You have taught many people and given strength to feeble hands.
4 I tuoi ragionamenti ridirizzavano quelli che vacillavano, E tu raffermavi le ginocchia che piegavano.
4
When someone stumbled, weak and tired, your words encouraged him to stand.
5 Ma ora che il male ti è avvenuto, tu te ne affanni; Ora ch’è giunto fino a te, tu ne sei smarrito.

Now it's your turn to be in trouble, and you are too stunned to face it.
6 La tua pietà non è ella stata la tua speranza, E l’integrità delle tue vie la tua aspettazione?

You worshiped God, and your life was blameless; and so you should have confidence and hope.
7 Deh! rammemorati, quale innocente perì mai, Ed ove furono gli uomini diritti mai distrutti?

Think back now. Name a single case where someone righteous met with disaster.
8 Siccome io ho veduto che quelli che arano l’iniquità, E seminano la perversità, la mietono.

I have seen people plow fields of evil and plant wickedness like seed; now they harvest wickedness and evil.
9 Essi periscono per l’alito di Dio, E son consumati dal soffiar delle sue nari.

Like a storm, God destroys them in his anger.
10 Il ruggito del leone, e il grido del fier leone son ribattuti; E i denti de’ leoncelli sono stritolati.

The wicked roar and growl like lions, but God silences them and breaks their teeth.
11 Il vecchio leone perisce per mancamento di preda, E i figli della leonessa son dissipati.

Like lions with nothing to kill and eat, they die, and all their children are scattered.
12 Or mi è stata di nascosto significata una parola, E l’orecchio mio ne ha ritenuto un poco.

Once a message came quietly, so quietly I could hardly hear it.
13 Fra le immaginazioni delle visioni notturne, Quando il più profondo sonno cade sopra gli uomini,

Like a nightmare it disturbed my sleep.
14 Mi è venuto uno spavento ed un tremito, Che ha spaventate tutte quante le mie ossa.

I trembled and shuddered; my whole body shook with fear.
15 Ed uno spirito è passato davanti a me, Che mi ha fatto arricciare i peli della mia carne;

A light breeze touched my face, and my skin crawled with fright.
16 Egli si è fermato, ed io non ho riconosciuto il suo aspetto; Una sembianza è stata davanti agli occhi miei, Ed io ho udita una voce sommessa che diceva:

I could see something standing there; I stared, but couldn't tell what it was. Then I heard a voice out of the silence:
17 L’uomo sarebbe egli giustificato da Dio? L’uomo sarebbe egli giudicato puro dal suo fattore?

"Can anyone be righteous in the sight of God or be pure before his Creator?
18 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi servitori, E scorge della temerità ne’ suoi Angeli.

God does not trust his heavenly servants; he finds fault even with his angels.
19 Quanto più in coloro che abitano in case di fango, Il cui fondamento è nella polvere, E che son ridotti in polvere, esposti a’ vermi?

Do you think he will trust a creature of clay, a thing of dust that can be crushed like a moth?
20 Dalla mattina alla sera sono stritolati, E periscono in perpetuo, senza che alcuno vi ponga mente.

We may be alive in the morning, but die unnoticed before evening comes.
21 L’eccellenza ch’era in loro non si diparte ella? Muoiono, ma non con sapienza.

All that we have is taken away; we die, still lacking wisdom."
