1 Trarrai tu fuori il leviatan con l’amo, O con una fune che tu gli avrai calata sotto alla lingua?

Can you catch Leviathan with a fishhook or tie his tongue down with a rope?
2 Gli metterai tu un uncino al muso? Gli forerai tu le mascelle con una spina?

Can you put a rope through his snout or put a hook through his jaws?
3 Userà egli molti preghi teco? Ti parlerà egli con lusinghe?

Will he beg you to let him go? Will he plead with you for mercy?
4 Patteggerà egli teco, Che tu lo prenda per servo in perpetuo?

Will he make an agreement with you and promise to serve you forever?
5 Scherzerai tu con lui, come con un uccello? E lo legherai tu con un filo, per darlo alle tue fanciulle?

Will you tie him like a pet bird, like something to amuse your servant women?
6 I compagni ne faranno essi un convito? Lo spartiranno essi fra i mercatanti?

Will fishermen bargain over him? Will merchants cut him up to sell?
7 Gli empirai tu la pelle di roncigli, E la testa di raffi da pescare?

Can you fill his hide with fishing spears or pierce his head with a harpoon?
8 Pongli pur la mano addosso, Tu non ricorderai mai più la guerra.

Touch him once and you'll never try it again; you'll never forget the fight!
9 Ecco, la speranza di pigliarlo è fallace; Anzi l’uomo non sarà egli atterrato, solo a vederlo?

Anyone who sees Leviathan loses courage and falls to the ground.
10 Non vi è alcuno così feroce, che ardisca risvegliarlo; E chi potrà presentarsi davanti a me?

When he is aroused, he is fierce; no one would dare to stand before him.
11 Chi mi ha prevenuto in darmi cosa alcuna? ed io gliela renderò; Quello che è sotto tutti i cieli è mio.

Who can attack him and still be safe? No one in all the world can do it.
12 Io non tacerò le membra di quello, Nè ciò ch’è delle sue forze, nè la grazia della sua disposizione.

Let me tell you about Leviathan's legs and describe how great and strong he is.
13 Chi scoprirà il disopra della sua coverta? Chi verrà a lui con le sue doppie redini?

No one can tear off his outer coat or pierce the armor he wears.
14 Chi aprirà gli usci del suo muso? Lo spavento è d’intorno a’ suoi denti.

Who can make him open his jaws, ringed with those terrifying teeth?
15 I suoi forti scudi sono una cosa superba; Son serrati strettamente come con un suggello.

His back is made of rows of shields, fastened together and hard as stone.
16 L’uno si attiene all’altro, Talchè il vento non può entrar per entro.

Each one is joined so tight to the next, not even a breath can come between.
17 Sono attaccati gli uni agli altri, ed accoppiati insieme, E non possono spiccarsi l’uno dall’altro.

They all are fastened so firmly together that nothing can ever pull them apart.
18 I suoi starnuti fanno sfavillar della luce, E i suoi occhi son simili alle palpebre dell’alba.

Light flashes when he sneezes, and his eyes glow like the rising sun.
19 Della sua gola escono fiaccole, Scintille di fuoco ne sprizzano.

Flames blaze from his mouth, and streams of sparks fly out.
20 Delle sue nari esce un fumo, Come d’una pignatta bollente, o d’una caldaia.

Smoke comes pouring out of his nose, like smoke from weeds burning under a pot.
21 L’alito suo accende i carboni, E fiamma esce della sua bocca.

His breath starts fires burning; flames leap out of his mouth.
22 La possa alberga nel suo collo, E la doglia tresca davanti a lui.

His neck is so powerful that all who meet him are terrified.
23 Le polpe della sua carne son compresse; Egli ha la carne addosso soda, e non tremola punto.

There is not a weak spot in his skin; it is as hard and unyielding as iron.
24 Il cuor suo è sodo come una pietra, E massiccio come un pezzo della macina disotto.

His stony heart is without fear, as unyielding and hard as a millstone.
25 I più forti e valenti hanno paura di lui, quando egli si alza; E si purgano de’ lor peccati, per lo gran fracasso.

When he rises up, even the strongest are frightened; they are helpless with fear.
26 Nè la spada di chi l’aggiungerà potrà durare, Nè l’asta, nè lo spuntone, nè la corazza:

There is no sword that can wound him; no spear or arrow or lance that can harm him.
27 Egli reputa il ferro per paglia, E il rame per legno intarlato.

For him iron is as flimsy as straw, and bronze as soft as rotten wood.
28 La saetta non lo farà fuggire; Le pietre della frombola si mutano inverso lui in istoppia.

There is no arrow that can make him run; rocks thrown at him are like bits of straw.
29 Gli ordigni son da lui riputati stoppia; Ed egli si beffa del vibrare dello spuntone.

To him a club is a piece of straw, and he laughs when men throw spears.
30 Egli ha sotto di sè de’ testi pungenti; Egli striscia come una trebbia di ferro in sul pantano.

The scales on his belly are like jagged pieces of pottery; they tear up the muddy ground like a threshing sledge.
31 Egli fa bollire il profondo mare come una caldaia; Egli rende il mare simile a una composizione d’unguentaro.

He churns up the sea like boiling water and makes it bubble like a pot of oil.
32 Egli fa rilucere dietro a sè un sentiero, E l’abisso pare canuto.

He leaves a shining path behind him and turns the sea to white foam.
33 Non vi è alcuno animale in su la terra che gli possa essere assomigliato, Che sia stato fatto per esser senza paura.

There is nothing on earth to compare with him; he is a creature that has no fear.
34 Egli riguarda ogni cosa eccelsa, Ed è re sopra tutte le più fiere belve.

He looks down on even the proudest animals; he is king of all wild beasts.
