1 E BILDAD Suhita rispose, e disse:

Are you finally through with your windy speech?
2 Infino a quando proferirai tali ragionamenti, E saranno le parole della tua bocca come un vento impetuoso?

3 Iddio pervertirebbe egli il giudicio? L’Onnipotente pervertirebbe egli la giustizia?

God never twists justice; he never fails to do what is right.
4 Se i tuoi figliuoli hanno peccato contro a lui, Egli altresì li ha dati in mano del lor misfatto.

Your children must have sinned against God, and so he punished them as they deserved.
5 Ma quant’è a te, se tu ricerchi Iddio, E chiedi grazia all’Onnipotente;

But turn now and plead with Almighty God;
6 Se tu sei puro e diritto, Certamente egli si risveglierà di presente in favor tuo, E farà prosperare il tuo giusto abitacolo.

if you are so honest and pure, then God will come and help you and restore your household as your reward.
7 E la tua condizione di prima sarà stata piccola, E l’ultima diventerà grandissima.

All the wealth you lost will be nothing compared with what God will give you then.
8 Perciocchè domanda pur le età primiere, E disponti ad informarti da’ padri loro;

Look for a moment at ancient wisdom; consider the truths our ancestors learned.
9 Imperocchè, quant’è a noi, siamo sol da ieri in qua, E non abbiamo intendimento; Perchè i nostri giorni son come un’ombra sopra la terra;

Our life is short, we know nothing at all; we pass like shadows across the earth.
10 Non insegnerannoti essi, e non parlerannoti, E non trarranno essi fuori ragionamenti dal cuor loro?

But let the ancient wise people teach you; listen to what they had to say:
11 Il giunco sorgerà egli senza pantano? L’erba de’ prati crescerà ella senz’acqua?

"Reeds can't grow where there is no water; they are never found outside a swamp.
12 E pure, mentre è ancor verde, e non è ancora segata, Si secca avanti ogni altra erba.

If the water dries up, they are the first to wither, while still too small to be cut and used.
13 Tali son le vie di tutti quelli che dimenticano Iddio, E così perirà la speranza dell’ipocrita;
13
Godless people are like those reeds; their hope is gone, once God is forgotten.
14 La cui speranza sarà troncata, E la cui confidanza sarà una casa di ragnolo.

They trust a thread - a spider's web.
15 Egli si appoggerà in su la casa sua, ma quella non istarà ferma; Egli si atterrà ad essa, ma ella non istarà in piè.
15
If they lean on a web, will it hold them up? If they grab for a thread, will it help them stand?"
16 Egli è verdeggiante al sole, E i suoi rami si spandono fuori in sul giardino, nel quale è piantato;

Evil people sprout like weeds in the sun, like weeds that spread all through the garden.
17 Le sue radici s’intralciano presso alla fonte, Egli mira la casa di pietra.

Their roots wrap around the stones and hold fast to every rock.
18 Ma, se alcuno lo manderà in ruina, divellendolo dal luogo suo, Questo lo rinnegherà dicendo: Io non ti vidi giammai.

But then pull them up - no one will ever know they were there.
19 Ecco, tale è l’allegrezza della sua via, E dalla polvere ne germoglieranno altri.

Yes, that's all the joy evil people have; others now come and take their places.
20 Ecco, Iddio non disdegna l’uomo intiero; Ma altresì non presta la mano a’ maligni.

But God will never abandon the faithful or ever give help to evil people.
21 Ancora empierà egli la tua bocca di riso, E le tue labbra di giubilo.

He will let you laugh and shout again,
22 Quelli che ti odiano saranno vestiti di vergogna; Ma il tabernacolo degli empi non sarà più.
22
but he will bring disgrace on those who hate you, and the homes of the wicked will vanish.
