1 DOPO queste cose, Gesù se ne andò all’altra riva del mar della Galilea, che è il mar di Tiberiade.

2 E gran moltitudine lo seguitava, perciocchè vedevano i miracoli ch’egli faceva negl’infermi.

3 Ma Gesù salì in sul monte, e quivi sedeva co’ suoi discepoli.

4 Or la pasqua, la festa de’ Giudei, era vicina.

5 Gesù adunque, alzati gli occhi, e veggendo che gran moltitudine veniva a lui, disse a Filippo: Onde comprerem noi del pane, per dar da mangiare a costoro?

6 Or diceva questo, per provarlo, perciocchè egli sapeva quel ch’era per fare.

7 Filippo gli rispose: Del pane per dugento denari non basterebbe loro, perchè ciascun d’essi ne prendesse pure un poco.

8 Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, l’uno de’ suoi discepoli, gli disse:

9 V’e qui un fanciullo, che ha cinque pani d’orzo, e due pescetti; ma, che è ciò per tanti?

10 E Gesù disse: Fate che gli uomini si assettino. Or v’era in quel luogo erba assai. La gente adunque si assettò, ed erano in numero d’intorno a cinquemila.

11 E Gesù prese i pani, e, rese grazie, li distribuì a’ discepoli, e i discepoli alla gente assettata; il simigliante fece dei pesci, quanti ne volevano.

12 E dopo che furon saziati, Gesù disse a’ suoi discepoli: Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati, che nulla se ne perda.

13 Essi adunque li raccolsero, ed empierono dodici corbelli di pezzi di que’ cinque pani d’orzo, ch’erano avanzati a coloro che aveano mangiato.

14 Laonde la gente, avendo veduto il miracolo che Gesù avea fatto, disse: Certo costui è il profeta, che deve venire al mondo.

15 Gesù adunque, conoscendo che verrebbero, e lo rapirebbero per farlo re, si ritrasse di nuovo in sul monte, tutto solo.

16 E QUANDO fu sera, i suoi discepoli discesero verso il mare.

17 E montati nella navicella, traevano all’altra riva del mare, verso Capernaum; e già era scuro, e Gesù non era venuto a loro.

18 E perchè soffiava un gran vento, il mare era commosso.

19 Ora, quando ebbero vogato intorno a venticinque o trenta stadi, videro Gesù che camminava in sul mare, e si accostava alla navicella, ed ebbero paura.

20 Ma egli disse loro: Son io, non temiate.

21 Essi adunque volonterosamente lo ricevettero dentro la navicella; e subitamente la navicella arrivò là dove essi traevano.

22 IL giorno seguente, la moltitudine ch’era restata all’altra riva del mare, avendo veduto che quivi non v’era altra navicella che quell’una nella quale erano montati i discepoli di Gesù, e ch’egli non v’era montato con loro; anzi che i suoi discepoli erano partiti soli

23 or altre navicelle eran venute di Tiberiade, presso del luogo, ove, avendo il Signore rese grazie, aveano mangiato il pane;

24 la moltitudine, dico, come ebbe veduto che Gesù non era quivi, nè i suoi discepoli, montò anch’ella in quelle navicelle, e venne in Capernaum, cercando Gesù.

25 E trovatolo di là dal mare, gli disse: Maestro, quando sei giunto qua?

26 Gesù rispose loro, e disse: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che voi mi cercate, non perciocchè avete veduti miracoli; ma, perciocchè avete mangiato di quei pani, e siete stati saziati.

27 Adoperatevi, non intorno al cibo che perisce, ma intorno al cibo che dimora in vita eterna, il quale il Figliuol dell’uomo vi darà; perciocchè esso ha il Padre, cioè Iddio, suggellato.

28 Laonde essi gli dissero: Che faremo, per operar le opere di Dio?

29 Gesù rispose, e disse loro: Questa è l’opera di Dio: che voi crediate in colui ch’egli ha mandato.

30 Laonde essi gli dissero: Qual segno fai tu adunque, acciocchè noi lo veggiamo, e ti crediamo? che operi?

31 I nostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, come è scritto: Egli diè loro a mangiare del pan celeste.

32 Allora Gesù disse loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che Mosè non vi ha dato il pane celeste; ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane celeste.

33 Perciocchè il pan di Dio è quel che scende dal cielo, e dà vita al mondo.

34 Essi adunque gli dissero: Signore, dacci del continuo cotesto pane.

35 E Gesù disse loro: Io sono il pan della vita; chi viene a me non avrà fame, e chi crede in me non avrà giammai sete.

36 Ma io vi ho detto che, benchè mi abbiate veduto, non però credete.

37 Tutto quello che il Padre mi dà verrà a me, ed io non caccerò fuori colui che viene a me.

38 Perciocchè io son disceso del cielo, non acciocchè io faccia la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.

39 Ora questa è la volontà del Padre che mi ha mandato: ch’io non perda niente di tutto ciò ch’egli mi ha dato; anzi, ch’io lo riscusciti nell’ultimo giorno.

40 Ma altresì la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato è questa: che chiunque vede il Figliuolo, e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna; ed io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

41 I Giudei adunque mormoravano di lui, perciocchè egli avea detto: Io sono il pane ch’è disceso dal cielo.

42 E dicevano: Costui non è egli Gesù, figliuol di Giuseppe, di cui noi conosciamo il padre e la madre? come adunque dice costui: Io son disceso dal cielo?

43 Laonde Gesù rispose, e disse loro: Non mormorate tra voi.

44 Niuno può venire a me, se non che il Padre che mi ha mandato lo tragga; ed io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

45 Egli è scritto ne’ profeti: E tutti saranno insegnati da Dio. Ogni uomo dunque che ha udito dal Padre, ed ha imparato, viene a me.

46 Non già che alcuno abbia veduto il Padre, se non colui ch’è da Dio; esso ha veduto il Padre.

47 In verità, in verità, io vi dico: Chi crede in me ha vita eterna.

48 Io sono il pan della vita.

49 I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, e morirono.

50 Quest’è il pane ch’è disceso dal cielo, acciocchè chi ne avrà mangiato non muoia.

51 Io sono il vivo pane, ch’è disceso dal cielo; se alcun mangia di questo pane viverà in eterno; or il pane che io darò è la mia carne, la quale io darò per la vita del mondo.

52 I Giudei adunque contendevan fra loro, dicendo: Come può costui darci a mangiar la sua carne?

53 Perciò Gesù disse loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che se voi non mangiate la carne del Figliuol dell’uomo, e non bevete il suo sangue, voi non avete la vita in voi.

54 Chi mangia la mia carne, e beve il mio sangue, ha vita eterna; ed io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

55 Perciocchè la mia carne è veramente cibo, ed il mio sangue è veramente bevanda.

56 Chi mangia la mia carne, e beve il mio sangue, dimora in me, ed io in lui.

57 Siccome il vivente Padre mi ha mandato, ed io vivo per il Padre, così, chi mi mangia viverà anch’egli per me.

58 Quest’è il pane ch’è disceso dal cielo; non quale era la manna che i vostri padri mangiarono, e morirono; chi mangia questo pane viverà in eterno.

59 Queste cose disse nella sinagoga, insegnando in Capernaum.

60 LAONDE molti de’ suoi discepoli, uditolo, dissero: Questo parlare è duro, chi può ascoltarlo?

61 E Gesù, conoscendo in sè stesso che i suoi discepoli mormoravan di ciò, disse loro: Questo vi scandalezza egli?

62 Che sarà dunque, quando vedrete il Figliuol dell’uomo salire ove egli era prima?

63 Lo spirito è quel che vivifica, la carne non giova nulla; le parole che io vi ragiono sono spirito e vita.

64 Ma ve ne sono alcuni di voi, i quali non credono poichè Gesù conosceva fin dal principio chi erano coloro che non credevano, e chi era colui che lo tradirebbe.

65 E diceva: Perciò vi ho detto che niuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre mio.

66 Da quell’ora molti de’ suoi discepoli si trassero indietro, e non andavano più attorno con lui.

67 Laonde Gesù disse a’ dodici: Non ve ne volete andare ancor voi?

68 E Simon Pietro gli rispose: Signore, a chi ce ne andremmo? tu hai le parole di vita eterna.

69 E noi abbiamo creduto, ed abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuol dell’Iddio vivente.

70 Gesù rispose loro: Non ho io eletti voi dodici? e pure un di voi è diavolo.

71 Or egli diceva ciò di Giuda Iscariot, figliuol di Simone; perciocchè esso era per tradirlo, quantunque fosse uno de’ dodici.

1 After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.

2 A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.

3 Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him.

4 (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.)

5 Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”

6 He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.

7 Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”

8 Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.

9 “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)

11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.

12 After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”

13 So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.

14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”

15 When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.

16 That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.

17 But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.

18 Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough.

19 They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,

20 but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here! ”

21 Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them.

23 Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.

24 So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him.

25 They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.

27 But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

28 They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”

29 Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”

30 They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?

31 After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.

33 The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”

35 Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

36 But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me.

37 However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.

38 For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.

39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.

40 For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

42 They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

43 But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said.

44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.

45 As it is written in the Scriptures, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.

46 (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.)

47 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.

48 Yes, I am the bread of life!

49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.

50 Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”

52 Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.

53 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.

54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.

55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

56 Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.

57 I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.

58 I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”

59 He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

60 Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”

61 Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, “Does this offend you?

62 Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?

63 The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

64 But some of you do not believe me.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)

65 Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”

66 At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.

67 Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?”

68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.

69 We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God. ”

70 Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”

71 He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him.
