Hebrews 2

DBY

NCV

1 For this reason we should give heed more abundantly to the things [we have] heard, lest in any way we should slip away.
1 So we must be more careful to follow what we were taught. Then we will not stray away from the truth.
2 For if the word which was spoken by angels was firm, and every transgression and disobedience received just retribution,
2 The teaching God spoke through angels was shown to be true, and anyone who did not follow it or obey it received the punishment that was earned.
3 how shall *we* escape if we have been negligent of so great salvation, which, having had its commencement in being spoken [of] by the Lord, has been confirmed to us by those who have heard;
3 So surely we also will be punished if we ignore this great salvation. The Lord himself first told about this salvation, and it was proven true to us by those who heard him.
4 God bearing, besides, witness with [them] to [it], both by signs and wonders, and various acts of power, and distributions of [the] Holy Spirit, according to his will?
4 God also proved it by using wonders, great signs, many kinds of miracles, and by giving people gifts through the Holy Spirit, just as he wanted.
5 For he has not subjected to angels the habitable world which is to come, of which we speak;
5 God did not choose angels to be the rulers of the new world that was coming, which is what we have been talking about.
6 but one has testified somewhere, saying, What is man, that thou rememberest him, or son of man that thou visitest him?
6 It is written in the Scriptures, "Why are people important to you? Why do you take care of human beings?
7 Thou hast made him some little inferior to the angels; thou hast crowned him with glory and honour, [and hast set him over the works of thy hands;]
7 You made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You put all things under their control."
8 thou hast subjected all things under his feet. For in subjecting all things to him, he has left nothing unsubject to him. But now we see not yet all things subjected to *him*,
8 When God put everything under their control, there was nothing left that they did not rule. Still, we do not yet see them ruling over everything.
9 but we see Jesus, who [was] made some little inferior to angels on account of the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; so that by the grace of God he should taste death for every thing.
9 But we see Jesus, who for a short time was made lower than the angels. And now he is wearing a crown of glory and honor because he suffered and died. And by God's grace, he died for everyone.
10 For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make perfect the leader of their salvation through sufferings.
10 God is the One who made all things, and all things are for his glory. He wanted to have many children share his glory, so he made the One who leads people to salvation perfect through suffering.
11 For both he that sanctifies and those sanctified [are] all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
11 Jesus, who makes people holy, and those who are made holy are from the same family. So he is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters.
12 saying, I will declare thy name to my brethren; in [the] midst of [the] assembly will I sing thy praises.
12 He says, "Then, I will tell my fellow Israelites about you; I will praise you in the public meeting."
13 And again, I will trust in him. And again, Behold, I and the children which God has given me.
13 He also says, "I will trust in God." And he also says, "I am here, and with me are the children God has given me."
14 Since therefore the children partake of blood and flesh, he also, in like manner, took part in the same, that through death he might annul him who has the might of death, that is, the devil;
14 Since these children are people with physical bodies, Jesus himself became like them. He did this so that, by dying, he could destroy the one who has the power of death -- the devil --
15 and might set free all those who through fear of death through the whole of their life were subject to bondage.
15 and free those who were like slaves all their lives because of their fear of death.
16 For he does not indeed take hold of angels [by the hand], but he takes hold of the seed of Abraham.
16 Clearly, it is not angels that Jesus helps, but the people who are from Abraham.
17 Wherefore it behoved him in all things to be made like to [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people;
17 For this reason Jesus had to be made like his brothers in every way so he could be their merciful and faithful high priest in service to God. Then Jesus could bring forgiveness for their sins.
18 for, in that himself has suffered, being tempted, he is able to help those that are being tempted.
18 And now he can help those who are tempted, because he himself suffered and was tempted.
