1 Cornelio manda a buscar a Pedro<br />En Cesarea vivía un oficial del ejército romano<br /> llamado Cornelio, quien era un capitán del regimiento italiano.

2 Era un hombre devoto, temeroso de Dios, igual que todos los de su casa. Daba generosamente a los pobres y oraba a Dios con frecuencia.

3 Una tarde, como a las tres, tuvo una visión en la cual vio que un ángel de Dios se le acercaba.<br />—¡Cornelio! —dijo el ángel.

4 Cornelio lo miró fijamente, aterrorizado.<br />—¿Qué quieres, señor? —le preguntó al ángel.<br />Y el ángel contestó:<br />—¡Dios ha recibido tus oraciones y tus donativos a los pobres como una ofrenda!

5 Ahora pues, envía a algunos hombres a Jope y manda llamar a un hombre llamado Simón Pedro.

6 Él está hospedado con Simón, un curtidor que vive cerca de la orilla del mar.

7 En cuanto el ángel se fue, Cornelio llamó a dos de los sirvientes de su casa y a un soldado devoto, que era uno de sus asistentes personales.

9 Pedro visita a Cornelio<br />Al día siguiente, mientras los mensajeros de Cornelio se acercaban a la ciudad, Pedro subió a la azotea a orar. Era alrededor del mediodía,

10 y tuvo hambre; pero mientras preparaban la comida, cayó en un estado de éxtasis.

11 Vio los cielos abiertos y algo parecido a una sábana grande que bajaba por sus cuatro puntas.

12 En la sábana había toda clase de animales, reptiles y aves.

13 Luego una voz le dijo:<br />—Levántate, Pedro; mátalos y come de ellos.

14 —No, Señor —dijo Pedro—. Jamás he comido algo que nuestras leyes judías declaren impuro e inmundo.

15 Pero la voz habló de nuevo:<br />—No llames a algo impuro si Dios lo ha hecho limpio.

16 La misma visión se repitió tres veces, y repentinamente la sábana fue subida al cielo.

17 Pedro quedó muy desconcertado. ¿Qué podría significar la visión? Justo en ese momento, los hombres enviados por Cornelio encontraron la casa de Simón. De pie, frente a la puerta,

18 preguntaron si se hospedaba allí un hombre llamado Simón Pedro.

19 Entre tanto, mientras Pedro trataba de descifrar la visión, el Espíritu Santo le dijo: «Tres hombres han venido a buscarte.

20 Levántate, baja y vete con ellos sin titubear. No te preocupes, porque yo los he enviado».

21 Entonces Pedro bajó y dijo:<br />—Yo soy el hombre que ustedes buscan. ¿Por qué han venido?

22 Ellos dijeron:<br />—Nos envió Cornelio, un oficial romano. Es un hombre devoto y temeroso de Dios, muy respetado por todos los judíos. Un ángel santo le dio instrucciones para que vayas a su casa a fin de que él pueda escuchar tu mensaje.

23 Entonces Pedro invitó a los hombres a quedarse para pasar la noche. Al siguiente día, fue con ellos, acompañado por algunos hermanos de Jope.

24 Llegaron a Cesarea al día siguiente. Cornelio los estaba esperando y había reunido a sus parientes y amigos cercanos.

25 Cuando Pedro entró en la casa, Cornelio cayó a sus pies y lo adoró;

26 pero Pedro lo levantó y le dijo: «¡Ponte de pie, yo soy un ser humano como tú!».

27 Entonces conversaron y entraron en donde muchos otros estaban reunidos.

28 Pedro les dijo:<br />—Ustedes saben que va en contra de nuestras leyes que un hombre judío se relacione con gentiles<br /> o que entre en su casa; pero Dios me ha mostrado que ya no debo pensar que alguien es impuro o inmundo.

29 Por eso, sin oponerme, vine aquí tan pronto como me llamaron. Ahora díganme por qué enviaron por mí.

30 Cornelio contestó:<br />—Hace cuatro días, yo estaba orando en mi casa como a esta misma hora, las tres de la tarde. De repente, un hombre con ropa resplandeciente se paró delante de mí.

31 Me dijo: “Cornelio, ¡tu oración ha sido escuchada, y Dios ha tomado en cuenta tus donativos para los pobres!

32 Ahora, envía mensajeros a Jope y manda llamar a un hombre llamado Simón Pedro. Está hospedado en la casa de Simón, un curtidor que vive cerca de la orilla del mar”.

33 Así que te mandé a llamar de inmediato, y te agradezco que hayas venido. Ahora, estamos todos aquí, delante de Dios, esperando escuchar el mensaje que el Señor te ha dado.

34 Los gentiles oyen la Buena Noticia<br />Entonces Pedro respondió:<br />—Veo con claridad que Dios no muestra favoritismo.

35 En cada nación, él acepta a los que lo temen y hacen lo correcto.

36 Este es el mensaje de la Buena Noticia para el pueblo de Israel: que hay paz con Dios por medio de Jesucristo, quien es Señor de todo.

37 Ustedes saben lo que pasó en toda Judea, comenzando en Galilea, después de que Juan empezó a predicar su mensaje de bautismo.

38 Y saben que Dios ungió a Jesús de Nazaret con el Espíritu Santo y con poder. Después Jesús anduvo haciendo el bien y sanando a todos los que eran oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él.

39 »Y nosotros, los apóstoles, somos testigos de todo lo que él hizo por toda Judea y en Jerusalén. Lo mataron, colgándolo en una cruz,

40 pero Dios lo resucitó al tercer día. Después Dios permitió que se apareciera,

41 no al público en general,<br /> sino a nosotros, a quienes Dios había elegido de antemano para que fuéramos sus testigos. Nosotros fuimos los que comimos y bebimos con él después de que se levantó de los muertos.

42 Y él nos ordenó que predicáramos en todas partes y diéramos testimonio de que Jesús es a quien Dios designó para ser el juez de todos, de los que están vivos y de los muertos.

43 De él dan testimonio todos los profetas cuando dicen que a todo el que cree en él se le perdonarán los pecados por medio de su nombre.

44 Los gentiles reciben el Espíritu Santo<br />Mientras Pedro aún estaba diciendo estas cosas, el Espíritu Santo descendió sobre todos los que escuchaban el mensaje.

45 Los creyentes judíos<br /> que habían llegado con Pedro quedaron asombrados al ver que el don del Espíritu Santo también era derramado sobre los gentiles.

46 Pues los oyeron hablar en otras lenguas<br /> y alabar a Dios.<br />Entonces Pedro preguntó:

47 «¿Puede alguien oponerse a que ellos sean bautizados ahora que han recibido el Espíritu Santo, tal como nosotros lo recibimos?».

48 Por lo tanto, dio órdenes de que fueran bautizados en el nombre de Jesucristo. Después Cornelio le pidió que se quedara varios días con ellos.

1 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

2 He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

3 One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, “Cornelius!”

4 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.

5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.

6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.

8 He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.

9 About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.

10 He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.

11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.

12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.

13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”

14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”

16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate.

18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.

19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you.

20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?”

22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”

23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.

24 The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.

25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.

26 But Peter made him get up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.”

27 While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.

28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.

29 So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?”

30 Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me

31 and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.

32 Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’

33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism

35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached—

38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,

40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.

41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.

43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.

45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.

46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,

47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”

48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
