1 El concilio de Jerusalén<br />Cuando Pablo y Bernabé estaban en Antioquía de Siria, llegaron unos hombres de Judea y comenzaron a enseñarles a los creyentes:<br /> «A menos que se circunciden como exige la ley de Moisés, no podrán ser salvos».

2 Pablo y Bernabé no estaban de acuerdo con ellos y discutieron con vehemencia. Finalmente, la iglesia decidió enviar a Pablo y a Bernabé a Jerusalén, junto con algunos creyentes del lugar, para que hablaran con los apóstoles y con los ancianos sobre esta cuestión.

3 La iglesia envió a los delegados a Jerusalén, quienes de camino se detuvieron en Fenicia y Samaria para visitar a los creyentes. Les contaron —para alegría de todos— que los gentiles<br /> también se convertían.

4 Cuando llegaron a Jerusalén, toda la iglesia —incluidos los apóstoles y los ancianos— dio la bienvenida a Pablo y a Bernabé, quienes les informaron acerca de todo lo que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos.

5 Pero después algunos creyentes que pertenecían a la secta de los fariseos se pusieron de pie e insistieron: «Los convertidos gentiles deben ser circuncidados y hay que exigirles que sigan la ley de Moisés».

6 Así que los apóstoles y los ancianos se reunieron para resolver este asunto.

7 En la reunión, después de una larga discusión, Pedro se puso de pie y se dirigió a ellos de la siguiente manera: «Hermanos, todos ustedes saben que hace tiempo Dios me eligió de entre ustedes para que predicara a los gentiles a fin de que pudieran oír la Buena Noticia y creer.

8 Dios conoce el corazón humano y él confirmó que acepta a los gentiles al darles el Espíritu Santo, tal como lo hizo con nosotros.

9 Él no hizo ninguna distinción entre nosotros y ellos, pues les limpió el corazón por medio de la fe.

10 Entonces, ¿por qué ahora desafían a Dios al poner cargas sobre los creyentes<br /> gentiles con un yugo que ni nosotros ni nuestros antepasados pudimos llevar?

11 Nosotros creemos que todos somos salvos de la misma manera, por la gracia no merecida que proviene del Señor Jesús».

12 Todos escucharon en silencio mientras Bernabé y Pablo les contaron de las señales milagrosas y maravillas que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos entre los gentiles.

13 Cuando terminaron, Santiago se puso de pie y dijo: «Hermanos, escúchenme.

14 Pedro<br /> les ha contado de cuando Dios visitó por primera vez a los gentiles para tomar de entre ellos un pueblo para sí mismo.

15 Y la conversión de los gentiles es precisamente lo que los profetas predijeron. Como está escrito:

16 “Después yo volveré<br />y restauraré la casa<br /> caída de David.<br />Reconstruiré sus ruinas<br />y la restauraré,

17 para que el resto de la humanidad busque al Señor<br />,<br />incluidos todos los gentiles,<br />todos los que he llamado para que sean míos.<br />El Señor<br /> ha hablado,

18 Aquel que hizo que estas cosas se dieran a conocer desde hace mucho”<br />.

19 »Y mi opinión entonces es que no debemos ponerles obstáculos a los gentiles que se convierten a Dios.

20 Al contrario, deberíamos escribirles y decirles que se abstengan de comer alimentos ofrecidos a ídolos, de inmoralidad sexual, de comer carne de animales estrangulados y de consumir sangre.

21 Pues esas leyes de Moisés se han predicado todos los días de descanso en las sinagogas judías de cada ciudad durante muchas generaciones».

22 Carta para los creyentes gentiles<br />Entonces los apóstoles y los ancianos, junto con toda la iglesia de Jerusalén, escogieron delegados y los enviaron a Antioquía de Siria con Pablo y Bernabé para que informaran acerca de esta decisión. Los delegados escogidos eran dos de los líderes de la iglesia:<br /> Judas (también llamado Barsabás) y Silas.

23 La carta que llevaron decía lo siguiente:<br />«Nosotros, los apóstoles y los ancianos, sus hermanos de Jerusalén, escribimos esta carta a los creyentes gentiles de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia. ¡Saludos!

24 »Tenemos entendido que unos hombres de aquí los han perturbado e inquietado con su enseñanza, ¡pero nosotros no los enviamos!

25 Así que decidimos, después de llegar a un acuerdo unánime, enviarles representantes oficiales junto con nuestros amados Bernabé y Pablo,

26 quienes han arriesgado la vida por el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

27 Les enviamos a Judas y a Silas para confirmar lo que hemos decidido con relación a la pregunta de ustedes.

28 »Pues nos pareció bien al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros no imponer sobre ustedes una carga mayor que estos pocos requisitos:

29 deben abstenerse de comer alimentos ofrecidos a ídolos, de consumir sangre o la carne de animales estrangulados y de la inmoralidad sexual. Si hacen esto, harán bien. Adiós».

30 Los mensajeros salieron de inmediato para Antioquía, donde convocaron a una reunión general de los creyentes y entregaron la carta.

31 Y hubo mucha alegría en toda la iglesia ese día cuando leyeron este mensaje alentador.

32 Entonces Judas y Silas, ambos profetas, hablaron largo y tendido con los creyentes para animarlos y fortalecerlos en su fe.

33 Se quedaron allí un tiempo, y luego los creyentes los enviaron de regreso a la iglesia de Jerusalén con una bendición de paz.

35 Pablo y Bernabé se quedaron en Antioquía. Ellos y muchos otros enseñaban y predicaban la palabra del Señor en esa ciudad.

36 Pablo y Bernabé se separan<br />Después de un tiempo Pablo le dijo a Bernabé: «Volvamos a visitar cada una de las ciudades donde ya antes predicamos la palabra del Señor para ver cómo andan los nuevos creyentes».

37 Bernabé estuvo de acuerdo y quería llevar con ellos a Juan Marcos;

38 pero Pablo se opuso terminantemente ya que Juan Marcos los había abandonado en Panfilia y no había continuado con ellos en el trabajo.

39 Su desacuerdo fue tan intenso que se separaron. Bernabé tomó a Juan Marcos consigo y navegó hacia Chipre.

40 Pablo escogió a Silas y, al salir, los creyentes lo encomendaron al cuidado misericordioso del Señor.

41 Luego viajó por toda Siria y Cilicia, fortaleciendo a las iglesias.

1 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.”

2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.

3 The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad.

4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”

6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question.

7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.

9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.

10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear?

11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

13 When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me.

14 Simon has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles.

15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

16 “ ‘After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,

17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things’ —

18 things known from long ago.

19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.

21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers.

23 With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings.

24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.

25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul—

26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing.

28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:

29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. FAREWELL.

30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter.

31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.

32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers.

33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them.

35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.”

37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them,

38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work.

39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus,

40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.

41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
