1 Auf meinem Lager in den Nächten suchte ich, den meine Seele liebt: ich suchte ihn und fand ihn nicht.

Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.
2 Ich will doch aufstehen und in der Stadt umhergehen, auf den Straßen und auf den Plätzen, will suchen, den meine Seele liebt. Ich suchte ihn und fand ihn nicht.

"I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves." I sought him, but found him not.
3 Es fanden mich die Wächter, die in der Stadt umhergehen: Habt ihr den gesehen, den meine Seele liebt?

The sentinels found me, as they went about in the city. "Have you seen him whom my soul loves?"
4 Kaum war ich an ihnen vorüber, da fand ich, den meine Seele liebt. Ich ergriff ihn und ließ ihn nicht, bis ich ihn gebracht hatte in das Haus meiner Mutter und in das Gemach meiner Gebärerin.

Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him, and would not let him go until I brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
5 Ich beschwöre euch, Töchter Jerusalems, bei den Gazellen oder bei den Hindinnen des Feldes, daß ihr nicht wecket noch aufwecket die Liebe, bis es ihr gefällt!

I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the wild does: do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready!
6 Wer ist die, die da heraufkommt von der Wüste her wie Rauchsäulen, durchduftet von Myrrhe und Weihrauch, von allerlei Gewürzpulver des Krämers?

What is that coming up from the wilderness, like a column of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all the fragrant powders of the merchant?
7 Siehe da, Salomos Tragbett: Sechzig Helden rings um dasselbe her von den Helden Israels.

Look, it is the litter of Solomon! Around it are sixty mighty men of the mighty men of Israel,
8 Sie alle führen das Schwert, sind geübt im Kriege; ein jeder hat sein Schwert an seiner Hüfte, zum Schutz vor dem Schrecken in den Nächten. -

all equipped with swords and expert in war, each with his sword at his thigh because of alarms by night.
9 Der König Salomo hat sich ein Prachtbett gemacht von dem Holze des Libanon.

King Solomon made himself a palanquin from the wood of Lebanon.
10 Seine Säulen hat er von Silber gemacht, seine Lehne von Gold, seinen Sitz von Purpur; das Innere ist kunstvoll gestickt, aus Liebe, von den Töchtern Jerusalems.

He made its posts of silver, its back of gold, its seat of purple; its interior was inlaid with love. Daughters of Jerusalem,
11 Kommet heraus, Töchter Zions, und betrachtet den König Salomo in der Krone, mit welcher seine Mutter ihn gekrönt hat am Tage seiner Vermählung und am Tage der Freude seines Herzens!

come out. Look, O daughters of Zion, at King Solomon, at the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, on the day of the gladness of his heart.
