The Bible in Basic English BBE
Good News Translation GNT
1 Come, let us go back to the Lord; for he has given us wounds and he will make us well; he has given blows and he will give help.
1
The people say, "Let's return to the Lord! He has hurt us, but he will be sure to heal us; he has wounded us, but he will bandage our wounds, won't he?
2 After two days he will give us life, and on the third day he will make us get up, and we will be living before him.
2
In two or three days he will revive us, and we will live in his presence.
3 And let us have knowledge, let us go after the knowledge of the Lord; his going out is certain as the dawn, his decisions go out like the light; he will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain watering the earth.
3
Let us try to know the Lord. He will come to us as surely as the day dawns, as surely as the spring rains fall upon the earth."
4 O Ephraim, what am I to do to you? O Judah, what am I to do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew which goes early away.
4
But the Lord says, "Israel and Judah, what am I going to do with you? Your love for me disappears as quickly as morning mist; it is like dew, that vanishes early in the day.
5 So I have had it cut in stones; I gave them teaching by the words of my mouth;
5
That is why I have sent my prophets to you with my message of judgment and destruction. What I want from you is plain and clear:
6 Because my desire is for mercy and not offerings; for the knowledge of God more than for burned offerings.
6
I want your constant love, not your animal sacrifices. I would rather have my people know me than burn offerings to me.
7 But like a man, they have gone against the agreement; there they were false to me.
7
"But as soon as they entered the land at Adam, they broke the covenant I had made with them.
8 Gilead is a town of evil-doers, marked with blood.
8
Gilead is a city full of evil people and murderers.
9 And like a band of thieves waiting for a man, so are the priests watching secretly the way of those going quickly to Shechem, for they are working with an evil design.
9
The priests are like a gang of robbers who wait in ambush for someone. Even on the road to the holy place at Shechem they commit murder. And they do all this evil deliberately!
10 In Israel I have seen a very evil thing; there false ways are seen in Ephraim, Israel is unclean;
10
I have seen a horrible thing in Israel: my people have defiled themselves by worshiping idols.
11 And Judah has put up disgusting images for himself.
11
"And as for you, people of Judah, I have set a time to punish you also for what you are doing.
