1 GUAI al paese che fa ombra con le ale, che è di là da’ fiumi d’Etiopia!

2 Che manda messi per lo mare, e in vaselli di giunchi sopra le acque, dicendo; Andate, messi leggieri, alla gente di lunga statura, e dipelata; al popolo spaventevole, che è più oltre di quella; alla gente sparsa qua e là, e calpestata, la cui terra i fiumi predano.

3 Voi tutti gli abitatori del mondo, e voi gli abitanti della terra, quando si leverà la bandiera sopra i monti, riguardate; e quando si sonerà la tromba, ascoltate.

4 Perciocchè, così mi ha detto il Signore: Io me ne starò cheto, e riguarderò, dimorando nella mia stanza, a guisa di un calor chiaro più che il sole; come una nuvola rugiadosa nel calore della ricolta.

5 Perciocchè, avanti la mietitura, dopo che la vite avrà finito di metter le gemme, e che il fiore sarà divenuto agresto, che si andrà maturando, Iddio taglierà i magliuoli con falci, e torrà via i tralci, e li riciderà.

6 Saranno tutti quanti lasciati in abbandono agli uccelli de’ monti, ed alle bestie della terra; e gli uccelli passeranno la state sopra essi, ed ogni bestia della terra vi passerà il verno.

7 In quel tempo sarà portato presente al Signor degli eserciti da parte del popolo di lunga statura, e dipelato; e da parte del popolo spaventevole, che è più oltre di quello; e della gente sparsa qua e là, e calpestata, la cui terra i fiumi predano; al luogo del Nome del Signor degli eserciti, al monte di Sion. 1 How horrible it will be for the land of whirring wings which lies beyond the rivers of Sudan.

2 It sends messengers by sea in boats made of reeds [skimming] over the surface of the water. Go, swift messengers, to a tall and smooth-skinned people, a people [who are] feared far and near, a strong and aggressive nation, whose land is divided by rivers.

3 Look when someone raises a flag on the mountains. Listen when someone blows a ram's horn, all you inhabitants of the world who live on the earth.

4 This is what the LORD says to me: I will keep quiet and watch from my dwelling place. My presence will be like scorching heat in the sunshine, like heavy dew in the heat of the harvest.

5 Before the harvest, when blossoms are gone and grapes are ripening from blossoms, he will cut off the shoots with pruning shears and chop off the spreading branches.

6 They will be left for the birds of prey on the mountains and the wild animals. The birds of prey will feed on them in the summer, and all the wild animals on earth will feed on them in the winter.

7 At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Armies from a tall and smooth-skinned people, a people [who are] feared far and near, a strong and aggressive nation, whose land is divided by rivers. They will be brought to Mount Zion, the place where the name of the LORD of Armies is.
