1 GUAI ad Ariel; ad Ariel, alla città dove risedette Davide! aggiungete anno ad anno, scanninsi i sacrificii delle feste.

2 Ed io metterò Ariel in distretta; e la città non sarà altro che tristizia e cordoglio; e mi sarà come Ariel.

3 Ed io mi porrò, a campo contro a te a tondo, e ti assedierò con edificii, e rizzerò contro a te delle fortezze, e de’ ripari.

4 E tu sarai abbassata, tu parlerai da terra, e il tuo parlare, venendo dalla polvere, sarà sommesso; e la tua voce, procedente dalla terra, sarà come quella di uno spirito di Pitone, e il tuo parlare bisbiglierà dalla polvere.

5 E la moltitudine de’ tuoi stranieri sarà come polvere minuta, e il gran numero de’ bravi guerrieri come pula che trapassa, e quella non sarà se non per un piccol momento.

6 Ella sarà visitata dal Signor degli eserciti, con tuono, con tremoto, e con gran romore; con turbo, e con tempesta, e con fiamma di fuoco divorante.

7 E la moltitudine di tutte le genti che guerreggeranno contro ad Ariel, e tutti quelli che combatteranno la città, e le sue fortezze; e quelli che l’assedieranno, saranno come un sogno d’una vision notturna.

8 Ed avverrà che, come chi ha fame si sogna che, ecco, mangia; ma, quando è risvegliato, l’anima sua è vuota; e come chi ha sete si sogna che, ecco, beve; ma, quando è desto, ecco, egli è stanco, e l’anima sua è assetata; così sarà la moltitudine di tutte le genti, che guerreggeranno contro al monte di Sion.

9 Fermatevi, e vi maravigliate; sclamate, e gridate: essi sono ebbri, e non di vino; vacillano, e non di cervogia.

10 Perciocchè il Signore ha versato sopra voi uno spirito di profondo sonno, e vi ha chiusi gli occhi, ed ha appannati gli occhi de’ profeti, e de’ veggenti, vostri capi.

11 E la visione, intorno a qual si voglia cosa, vi sarà come le parole di lettere suggellate, le quali fossero date ad uno che sapesse leggere, dicendogli: Deh! leggi questo; il quale dicesse:

12 Non posso, perchè è suggellato. Ovvero, come se si dessero lettere ad uno che non sapesse leggere, dicendogli: Deh! leggi questo; il quale dicesse: Io non so leggere.

13 Oltre a ciò, il Signore ha detto: Perciocchè questo popolo, accostandosi, mi onora con la sua bocca, e con le sue labbra, e il suo cuore è lungi da me; e il timore, del quale egli mi teme, è un comandamento degli uomini, che è stato loro insegnato;

14 perciò, ecco, io continuerò a fare inverso questo popolo maraviglie grandi, e stupende; e la sapienza de’ suoi savi perirà, e l’intendimento de’ suoi intendenti si nasconderà.

15 Guai a quelli che si nascondono profondamente dal Signore, per prender segreti consigli; e le cui opere son nelle tenebre; e che dicono: Chi ci vede, e chi ci scorge?

16 Oh vostra perversità! sarebbe il vasellaio reputato come l’argilla? l’opera direbbe ella del suo fattore: Egli non mi ha fatta? e la cosa formata direbbe ella del suo formatore: Egli non l’ha intesa?

17 Non sarà il Libano fra ben poco tempo mutato in Carmel? e Carmel reputato come una selva?

18 E in quel giorno i sordi udiranno le parole del libro, e gli occhi de’ ciechi vedranno, essendo liberati di caligine, e di tenebre.

19 Ed i mansueti avranno allegrezza sopra allegrezza, nel Signore; e i poveri d’infra gli uomini gioiranno nel Santo d’Israele.

20 Perciocchè il violento sarà mancato, e non vi sarà più schernitore, e saranno stati distrutti tutti quelli che si studiano ad iniquità.

21 I quali fanno peccar gli uomini in parole, e tendono lacci a chi li riprende nella porta, e traboccano il giusto in confusione.

22 Perciò, il Signore, che ha riscattato Abrahamo, dice così della casa di Giacobbe: Ora Giacobbe non sarà più confuso, e la sua faccia non impallidirà più.

23 Quando pur vedrà in mezzo di sè i suoi figliuoli, opera delle mie mani; i quali santificheranno il mio Nome; santificheranno il Santo di Giacobbe, e temeranno l’Iddio d’Israele.

24 E quelli ch’erano traviati di spirito comprenderanno l’intendimento, ed i mormoratori impareranno la dottrina.

GOD'S WORD Translation GW

1 How horrible it will be for you Ariel, Ariel, the city where David camped. Let year after year go by. Let your annual festivals go on.

2 I will torment Ariel, and the city will be filled with people grieving and mourning. The city will become like Ariel.

3 I will set up war camps all around you. I will blockade you with towers. I will put up mounds of dirt around you.

4 When you have fallen, you will speak as you lie on the ground. Your words will be muffled by the dust. Your voice will come out of the ground like that of a ghost. Your words will be whispered from the dust.

5 Your many enemies will be like fine dust. Your many foes will be like husks blown by the wind. All of this will happen suddenly, unexpectedly.

6 The LORD of Armies will punish you with thunder, earthquakes, and loud noises, with windstorms, rainstorms, and fire storms.

7 The armies from all the nations will go to war against Ariel. They will go to war against it, blockade it, and torment it. All of this will be like a dream, like a vision in the night.

8 They will be like hungry people who dream that they're eating and wake up to find they're hungry. They will be like thirsty people who dream that they're drinking and wake up to find they're lightheaded and parched with thirst. This is what will happen to the armies from all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.

9 If you confuse yourselves, you will be confused. If you blind yourselves, you will be blinded. You are drunk, but not from wine. You stagger, but not from liquor.

10 The LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He will shut your eyes. (Your eyes are the prophets.) He will cover your heads. (Your heads are the seers. )

11 To you all these visions will be like words in a book that is closed and sealed. You give this book to someone who can read, saying, "Please read this." He answers, "I can't read it. It's sealed."

12 Then you give the book to someone who can't read, saying, "Please read this." He answers, "I can't read."

13 The Lord says, "These people worship me with their mouths and honor me with their lips. But their hearts are far from me, and their worship of me is [based on] rules made by humans.

14 That is why I am going to do something completely amazing for these people once again. The wisdom of their wise people will disappear. The intelligence of their intelligent people will be hidden."

15 How horrible it will be for those who try to hide their plans from the LORD. Their deeds are done in the dark, and they say, "No one can see us" and "No one can recognize us."

16 You turn things upside down! Is the potter no better than his clay? Can something that has been made say about its maker, "He didn't make me"? Can a piece of pottery say about the potter, "He doesn't understand"?

17 In a very short time Lebanon will be turned into a fertile field and the fertile field will be considered a forest.

18 When that day comes, the deaf will hear the words written in the book. The blind will see out of their gloom and darkness.

19 Humble people again will find joy in the LORD. The poorest of people will find joy in the Holy One of Israel.

20 Tyrants will be gone. Mockers will be finished. All who look for ways to do wrong will come to an end:

21 those who make people sin with words, those who lay traps for judges, those who, without any reason, deny justice to people who are in the right.

22 This is what the LORD, who saved Abraham, says about the descendants of Jacob: Jacob will no longer be ashamed. Jacob's face will no longer turn pale.

23 When they see all their children, the children I made with my hands, they will acknowledge my name as holy. They will treat the Holy One of Jacob as holy. They will stand in terror of the God of Israel.

24 Then those who are wayward in spirit will gain understanding, and those who complain will accept instruction.
