1 CONSOLATE, consolate il mio popolo, dirà il vostro Dio.

2 Parlate al cuor di Gerusalemme, e predicatele che il suo termine è compiuto, che la sua iniquità è quietata; perchè ella ha ricevuto dalla mano del Signore il castigo di tutti i suoi peccati al doppio.

3 Vi è una voce d’uno che grida: Acconciate nel deserto la via del Signore, addirizzate per la solitudine la strada all’Iddio nostro.

4 Ogni valle sia alzata, ed ogni monte e colle sia abbassato; e sieno i luoghi distorti ridirizzati, e i luoghi erti ridotti in pianura.

5 E la gloria del Signore si manifesterà, ed ogni carne la vedrà; perciocchè la bocca del Signore ha parlato.

6 Vi è una voce che dice: Grida. Ed è stato detto: Che griderò? Grida, che ogni carne è fieno, e che tutto il bene ch’ella fa è come un fiore della campagna.

7 Il fieno si secca, il fiore si appassa, quando lo Spirito del Signore vi soffia contra; in verità il popolo non è altro che fieno.

8 Il fieno si secca, il fiore si appassa; ma la parola di Dio dimora in eterno.

9 O Sion, che rechi le buone novelle, sali sopra un alto monte; o Gerusalemme, che rechi le buone novelle, alza di forza la tua voce; alzala, non temere; di’ alle città di Giuda: Ecco l’Iddio vostro.

10 Ecco, il Signore Iddio verrà contro al forte, e il suo braccio lo signoreggerà; ecco, la sua mercede è con lui, e la sua opera è dinanzi alla sua faccia.

11 Egli pasturerà la sua greggia, a guisa di pastore; egli si accoglierà gli agnelli in braccio, e li torrà in seno; egli condurrà pian piano le pregne.

12 CHI ha misurate le acque col pugno, e chi ha fatto il conto dello spazio del cielo con la spanna, ed ha compresa la polvere della terra in una misura, ed ha pesati i monti con la stadera, e i colli con la bilancia?

13 Chi ha addirizzato lo Spirito del Signore? o chi è stato suo consigliere, e chi gli ha insegnata alcuna cosa?

14 Con chi si è egli consigliato, e chi l’ha avvisato, o chi l’ha ammaestrato nel sentier del giudicio? e chi gli ha insegnata scienza, o mostrata la via degl’intendimenti?

15 Ecco, le genti sono come una gocciola della secchia, e son reputate come la polvere minuta delle bilance; ecco, egli può trasportar le isole di luogo in luogo, come polvere minuta.

16 E il Libano non basterebbe per lo fuoco, e le bestie che sono in quello non basterebbero per l’olocausto.

17 Tutte le genti sono come un niente nel suo cospetto; son da lui reputate men di nulla, e per una vanità.

18 Ed a cui assomigliereste Iddio, e qual sembianza gli adattereste?

19 Il fabbro fonde la scultura, e l’orafo vi distende su l’oro, da coprirla; e le fonde de’ cancelli di argento.

20 Colui che fa povera offerta sceglie un legno che non intarli; egli si cerca un artefice industrioso, per formargli una scultura che non si muove.

21 Non avete voi alcun conoscimento? non ascoltate voi? la cosa non vi è ella stata dichiarata fin dal principio? non intendete voi come la terra è stata fondata?

22 Egli è quel che siede sopra il globo della terra, ed a cui gli abitanti di essa sono come locuste; che stende i cieli come una tela, e li tende come una tenda da abitare;

23 che riduce i principi a niente, e fa che i rettori della terra son come una cosa vana;

24 come se non fossero pure stati piantati, nè pur seminati, o che il lor ceppo non fosse pure stato radicato in terra; sol che soffi contro a loro, si seccano, e il turbo li porta via come stoppia.

25 A cui dunque mi assomigliereste? o a cui sarei io agguagliato? dice il Santo.

26 Levate ad alto gli occhi vostri, e vedete; chi ha create quelle cose? chi fa uscire l’esercito loro a conto? chi le chiama tutte per nome, per la grandezza della sua forza, e, perciocchè egli è potente in virtù, senza che ne manchi pure una?

27 Perchè diresti, o Giacobbe; e perchè, o Israele, parleresti così: La mia via è occulta al Signore, e la mia ragione non viene più davanti all’Iddio mio?

28 Non sai tu, non hai tu udito? Il Signore è l’Iddio eterno, che ha create le estremità della terra; egli non si stanca, e non si affatica; il suo intendimento è infinito.

29 Egli dà forza allo stanco, ed accresce vigore a chi è senza forze.

30 I giovani si stancano, e si affaticano; e i più scelti giovani traboccano, e cadono.

31 Ma quelli che sperano nel Signore acquistano del continuo nuove forze; salgono con l’ale, come l’aquile; corrono, e non si affaticano; camminano, e non si stancano.

1 "Comfort my people! Comfort them!" says your God.

2 "Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and announce to it that its time of hard labor is over and its wrongs have been paid for. It has received from the LORD double for all its sins."

3 A voice cries out in the desert: "Clear a way for the LORD. Make a straight highway in the wilderness for our God.

4 Every valley will be raised. Every mountain and hill will be lowered. Steep places will be made level. Rough places will be made smooth.

5 Then the LORD's glory will be revealed and all people will see it together. The LORD has spoken."

6 A voice called, "Call out!" I asked, "What should I call out?" "Call out: All people are like grass, and all their beauty is like a flower in the field.

7 Grass dries up, and flowers wither when the LORD's breath blows on them. Yes, people are like grass.

8 Grass dries up, and flowers wither, but the word of our God will last forever."

9 Go up a high mountain, Zion. Tell the good news! Call out with a loud voice, Jerusalem. Tell the good news! Raise your voice without fear. Tell the cities of Judah: "Here is your God!"

10 The Almighty LORD is coming with power to rule with authority. His reward is with him, and the people he has won arrive ahead of him.

11 Like a shepherd he takes care of his flock. He gathers the lambs in his arms. He carries them in his arms. He gently helps the sheep and their lambs.

12 Who has measured the water of the sea with the palm of his hand or measured the sky with the length of his hand? Who has held the dust of the earth in a bushel basket or weighed the mountains on a scale and the hills on a balance?

13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD or instructed him as his adviser?

14 Whom did he consult? Who gave him understanding? Who taught him the right way? Who taught him knowledge? Who informed him about the way to understanding?

15 The nations are like a drop in a bucket and are considered to be like dust on a scale. The weight of the islands is like fine dust.

16 All the trees in Lebanon are not enough to burn an offering. Its wild animals are not enough for a single burnt offering.

17 All the nations amount to nothing in his presence. He considers them less than nothing and worthless.

18 To whom, then, can you compare God? To what statue can you compare him?

19 Craftsmen make idols. Goldsmiths cover them with gold. Silversmiths make silver chains for them.

20 The poorest people choose wood that will not rot and search out skillful craftsmen to set up idols that will not fall over.

21 Don't you know? Haven't you heard? Haven't you been told from the beginning? Don't you understand the foundations of the earth?

22 God is enthroned above the earth, and those who live on it are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the sky like a canopy and spreads it out like a tent to live in.

23 He makes rulers unimportant and makes earthly judges worth nothing.

24 They have hardly been planted. They have hardly been sown. They have hardly taken root in the ground. Then he blows on them and they wither, and a windstorm sweeps them away like straw.

25 "To whom, then, can you compare me? Who is my equal?" asks the Holy One.

26 Look at the sky and see. Who created these things? Who brings out the stars one by one? He calls them all by name. Because of the greatness of his might and the strength of his power, not one of them is missing.

27 Jacob, why do you complain? Israel, why do you say, "My way is hidden from the LORD, and my rights are ignored by my God"?

28 Don't you know? Haven't you heard? The eternal God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn't grow tired or become weary. His understanding is beyond reach.

29 He gives strength to those who grow tired and increases the strength of those who are weak.

30 Even young people grow tired and become weary, and young men will stumble and fall.

31 Yet, the strength of those who wait with hope in the LORD will be renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and won't become weary. They will walk and won't grow tired.
