1 In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah: we have a strong city; salvation will he appoint for walls and bulwarks.
1
On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city. Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.
2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth faith may enter in.
2
Open the gates so a righteous nation can come in- one that remains faithful.
3 Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]; because he trusteth in thee.
3
You will keep in perfect peace the mind [that is] dependent [on You], for it is trusting in You.
4 Trust ye in Jehovah for ever; for in Jehovah, [even] Jehovah, is an everlasting rock.
4
Trust in the Lord forever, because in Yah, the Lord, is an everlasting rock!
5 For he hath brought down them that dwell on high, the lofty city: he layeth it low, he layeth it low even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.
5
For He has humbled those who live in lofty places- an inaccessible city. He brings it down; He brings it down to the ground; He throws it to the dust.
6 The foot shall tread it down; even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.
6
Feet trample it, the feet of the humble, the steps of the poor.
7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou that art upright dost direct the path of the just.
7
The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path for the righteous.
8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Jehovah, have we waited for thee; to thy name, even to thy memorial [name], is the desire of our soul.
8
Yes, Lord, we wait for You in the path of Your judgments. Our desire is for Your name and renown.
9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee earnestly: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
9
I long for You in the night; yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks You, for when Your judgments are [in] the land, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10 Let favor be showed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness will he deal wrongfully, and will not behold the majesty of Jehovah.
10
[But if] the wicked is shown favor, he does not learn righteousness. In a righteous land he acts unjustly and does not see the majesty of the Lord.
11 Jehovah, thy hand is lifted up, yet they see not: but they shall see [thy] zeal for the people, and be put to shame; yea, fire shall devour thine adversaries.
11
Lord, Your hand is lifted up [to take action], but they do not see it. They will see [Your] zeal for [Your] people, and they will be put to shame. The fire for Your adversaries will consume them!
12 Jehovah, thou wilt ordain peace for us; for thou hast also wrought all our works for us.
12
Lord, You will establish peace for us, for You have also done all our work for us.
13 O Jehovah our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us; but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
13
Lord, our God, other lords than You have ruled over us, but we remember Your name alone.
14 [They are] dead, they shall not live; [they are] deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all remembrance of them to perish.
14
The dead do not live; departed spirits do not rise up. Indeed, You have visited and destroyed them; You have wiped out all memory of them.
15 Thou hast increased the nation, O Jehovah, thou hast increased the nation; thou art glorified; thou hast enlarged all the borders of the land.
15
You have added to the nation, Lord. You have added to the nation; You are honored. You have expanded all the borders of the land.
16 Jehovah, in trouble have they visited thee; they poured out a prayer [when] thy chastening was upon them.
16
Lord, they went to You in their distress; they poured out whispered [prayers because] Your discipline [fell] on them.
17 Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain and crieth out in her pangs; so we have been before thee, O Jehovah.
17
As a pregnant woman about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pains, so we were before You, Lord.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
18
We became pregnant, we writhed in pain; we gave birth to wind. We have won no victories on earth, and the earth's inhabitants have not fallen.
19 Thy dead shall live; my dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in the dust; for thy dew is [as] the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast forth the dead.
19
Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring forth the departed spirits.
20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
20
Go, my people, enter your rooms and close your doors behind you. Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.
21 For, behold, Jehovah cometh forth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
21
For look, the Lord is coming from His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity. The earth will reveal the blood shed on it and will no longer conceal her slain.
