The Message Bible MSG
1 ADONAI said to me, "Take a large tablet, and write on it in easily readable letters; 'Maher shalal, hash baz [the spoil hurries, the prey speeds along].'"
1
Then God told me, "Get a big sheet of paper and write in indelible ink, 'This belongs to Maher-shalal-hash-baz (Spoil-Speeds-Plunder-Hurries).'"
2 I had it witnessed for me by reliable witnesses - Uriyah the cohen and Z'kharyahu the son of Y'verekhyahu.
2
I got two honest men, Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah, to witness the document.
3 Then I had sexual relations with my wife; she became pregnant and gave birth to a son; and ADONAI said to me, "Name him Maher Shalal Hash Baz;
3
Then I went home to my wife, the prophetess. She conceived and gave birth to a son.
4 because before the child knows how to cry, 'Abba!' and 'Eema!', the riches of Dammesek and the spoil of Shomron will be carried off and given to the king of Ashur."
4
Before that baby says 'Daddy' or 'Mamma' the king of Assyria will have plundered the wealth of Damascus and the riches of Samaria."
5 ADONAI went on speaking and said more to me:
5
God spoke to me again, saying:
6 "Since this people has rejected the gently flowing waters from Shilo'ach and takes joy in Retzin and the son of Remalyah;
6
"Because this people has turned its back on the gently flowing stream of Shiloah And gotten all excited over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
7 now Adonai will bring upon them the mighty floodwaters of the [Euphrates] River - that is, the king of Ashur and his power. It will rise above all its channels and overflow all its banks.
7
I'm stepping in and facing them with the wild floodwaters of the Euphrates, The king of Assyria and all his fanfare, a river in flood, bursting its banks,
8 It will sweep through Y'hudah, flooding everything and passing on. It will reach even up to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the whole expanse of the land." God is with us! [Hebrew: 'immanu El]
8
Pouring into Judah, sweeping everything before it, water up to your necks, A huge wingspan of a raging river, O Immanuel, spreading across your land."
9 You may make an uproar, peoples; but you will be shattered. Listen, all of you from distant lands: arm yourselves, but you will be shattered; yes, arm yourselves, but you will be shattered;
9
But face the facts, all you oppressors, and then wring your hands. Listen, all of you, far and near. Prepare for the worst and wring your hands. Yes, prepare for the worst and wring your hands!
10 devise a plan, but it will come to nothing; say anything you like, but it won't happen; because God is with us [Hebrew: 'immanu El].
10
Plan and plot all you want - nothing will come of it. All your talk is mere talk, empty words, Because when all is said and done, the last word is Immanuel - God-With-Us. A Boulder Blocking Your Way
11 For this is what ADONAI said to me, speaking with a strong hand, warning me not to live the way this people does:
11
God spoke strongly to me, grabbed me with both hands and warned me not to go along with this people. He said:
12 "Don't regard as alliance what this people calls alliance, and don't fear what they fear or be awestruck by it;
12
"Don't be like this people, always afraid somebody is plotting against them. Don't fear what they fear. Don't take on their worries.
13 but ADONAI-Tzva'ot - consecrate him! Let him be the object of your fear and awe!
13
If you're going to worry, worry about The Holy. Fear God-of-the-Angel-Armies.
14 He is there to be a sanctuary. But for both the houses of Isra'el he will be a stone to stumble over, a rock obstructing their way; a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
14
The Holy can be either a Hiding Place or a Boulder blocking your way, The Rock standing in the willful way of both houses of Israel, A barbed-wire Fence preventing trespass to the citizens of Jerusalem.
15 Many of them will stumble and fall, be broken and trapped and captured.
15
Many of them are going to run into that Rock and get their bones broken, Get tangled up in that barbed wire and not get free of it."
16 Wrap up this document, and confine its teaching to those I have instructed."
16
Gather up the testimony, preserve the teaching for my followers,
17 I will wait for ADONAI, who is hiding his face from the house of Ya'akov; yes, I will look for him.
17
While I wait for God as long as he remains in hiding, while I wait and hope for him.
18 Meanwhile, I and the children whom ADONAI has given me will become for Isra'el signs and wonders from ADONAI-Tzva'ot living on Mount Tziyon. YESHA'YAHU (ISAIAH) 819
18
I stand my ground and hope, I and the children God gave me as signs to Israel, Warning signs and hope signs from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, who makes his home in Mount Zion.
19 So when they tell you to consult those squeaking, squawking mediums and fortune-tellers; [you are to answer], "Shouldn't a people seek their God? Must the living ask the dead
19
When people tell you, "Try out the fortunetellers. Consult the spiritualists. Why not tap into the spirit-world, get in touch with the dead?"
20 for teaching and instruction?" For they will indeed give you this unenlightened suggestion.
20
Tell them, "No, we're going to study the Scriptures." People who try the other ways get nowhere - a dead end!
21 Distressed and hungry they will pass through the land; and because of their hunger they will grow angry and curse by their king and by their God. But whether they look up [to God]
21
Frustrated and famished, they try one thing after another. When nothing works out they get angry, cursing first this god and then that one, Looking this way and that,
22 or [down] at the earth, they will see only trouble and darkness, anguished gloom and pervasive darkness.
22
up, down, and sideways - and seeing nothing, A blank wall, an empty hole. They end up in the dark with nothing.
