1 Así dijo el SEÑOR: Ve y compra una vasija de barro del alfarero, y toma contigo a algunos de los ancianos del pueblo y de los ancianos de los sacerdotes;

2 y sal al valle de Ben-hinom, que está a la entrada de la puerta de los tiestos, y proclama allí las palabras que yo te diré.

3 Dirás: "Oíd la palabra del SEÑOR, reyes de Judá y habitantes de Jerusalén. Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: 'He aquí, traeré tal calamidad sobre este lugar, que a todo el que oiga de ella le retiñirán los oídos.

4 'Porque me han abandonado, han hecho extraño este lugar y han ofrecido sacrificios en él a otros dioses, que ni ellos, ni sus padres, ni los reyes de Judá habían conocido, y han llenado este lugar de sangre de inocentes,

5 y han edificado los lugares altos de Baal para quemar a sus hijos en el fuego como holocaustos a Baal, cosa que nunca mandé, ni de la cual hablé, ni me pasó por la mente;

6 por tanto, he aquí, vienen díasdeclara el SEÑORcuando este lugar no se llamará más Tofet ni valle de Ben-hinom, sino Valle de la Matanza.

7 'Y haré nulo el consejo de Judá y de Jerusalén en este lugar, y los haré caer a espada delante de sus enemigos y a mano de los que buscan su vida, y entregaré sus cadáveres por comida a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra.

8 'También convertiré esta ciudad en desolación y burla; todo aquel que pase por ella se quedará atónito y silbará a causa de toda su destrucción.

9 'Y les haré comer la carne de sus hijos y la carne de sus hijas, y cada uno comerá la carne de su prójimo durante el sitio y en la aflicción con que les afligirán sus enemigos y los que buscan su vida.'"

10 Entonces romperás la vasija a la vista de los hombres que te acompañen,

11 y les dirás: "Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos: 'De igual manera romperé yo a este pueblo y a esta ciudad, como quien rompe una vasija de alfarero, que no se puede reparar más; y los enterrarán en Tofet por no haber otro lugar donde enterrar.

12 'Así haré con este lugar y con sus habitantesdeclara el SEÑORponiendo esta ciudad como Tofet.

13 'Y las casas de Jerusalén y las casas de los reyes de Judá serán como el lugar de Tofet, inmundas, a causa de todas las casas en cuyos terrados ofrecieron sacrificios a todo el ejército del cielo y derramaron libaciones a otros dioses.'"

14 Y volvió Jeremías de Tofet, adonde lo había enviado el SEÑOR a profetizar, y poniéndose en pie en el atrio de la casa del SEÑOR, dijo a todo el pueblo:

15 Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: "He aquí, voy a traer sobre esta ciudad y sobre todas sus aldeas la calamidad que he declarado contra ella, porque han endurecido su cerviz para no escuchar mis palabras."

1 God said to me, "Go, buy a clay pot. Then get a few leaders from the people and a few of the leading priests

2 and go out to the Valley of Ben-hinnom, just outside the Potsherd Gate, and preach there what I tell you.

3 "Say, 'Listen to God's Word, you kings of Judah and people of Jerusalem! This is the Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel. I'm about to bring doom crashing down on this place. Oh, and will ears ever ring!

4 Doom - because they've walked off and left me, and made this place strange by worshiping strange gods, gods never heard of by them, their parents, or the old kings of Judah. Doom - because they have massacred innocent people.

5 Doom - because they've built altars to that no-god Baal, and burned their own children alive in the fire as offerings to Baal, an atrocity I never ordered, never so much as hinted at!

6 "'And so it's pay day, and soon' - God's Decree! - 'this place will no longer be known as Topheth or Valley of Ben-hinnom, but Massacre Meadows.

7 I'm canceling all the plans Judah and Jerusalem had for this place, and I'll have them killed by their enemies. I'll stack their dead bodies to be eaten by carrion crows and wild dogs.

8 I'll turn this city into such a museum of atrocities that anyone coming near will be shocked speechless by the savage brutality.

9 The people will turn into cannibals. Dehumanized by the pressure of the enemy siege, they'll eat their own children! Yes, they'll eat one another, family and friends alike.'

10 "Say all this, and then smash the pot in front of the men who have come with you.

11 Then say, 'This is what God-of-the-Angel-Armies says: I'll smash this people and this city like a man who smashes a clay pot into so many pieces it can never be put together again. They'll bury bodies here in Topheth until there's no more room.

12 And the whole city will become a Topheth.

13 The city will be turned by people and kings alike into a center for worshiping the star gods and goddesses, turned into an open grave, the whole city an open grave, stinking like a sewer, like Topheth.'"

14 Then Jeremiah left Topheth, where God had sent him to preach the sermon, and took his stand in the court of God's Temple and said to the people,

15 "This is the Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies to you: 'Warning! Danger! I'm bringing down on this city and all the surrounding towns the doom that I have pronounced. They're set in their ways and won't budge. They refuse to do a thing I say.'"
