1 Y sucedió que el mismo año, al principio del reinado de Sedequías, rey de Judá, en el año cuarto, en el mes quinto, el profeta Hananías, hijo de Azur, que era de Gabaón, me habló en la casa del SEÑOR en presencia de los sacerdotes y de todo el pueblo, diciendo:

2 Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: "He quebrado el yugo del rey de Babilonia.

3 "Dentro de dos años haré volver a este lugar todos los utensilios de la casa del SEÑOR, que Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, tomó de este lugar y llevó a Babilonia.

4 "Y a Jeconías, hijo de Joacim, rey de Judá, y a todos los desterrados de Judá que fueron a Babilonia, yo los haré volver a este lugar"declara el SEÑOR"porque romperé el yugo del rey de Babilonia."

5 El profeta Jeremías respondió al profeta Hananías en presencia de los sacerdotes y en presencia de todo el pueblo que estaba de pie en la casa del SEÑOR;

6 y el profeta Jeremías dijo: Amén, así lo haga el SEÑOR. Confirme el SEÑOR tus palabras, que has profetizado para que sean devueltos los utensilios de la casa del SEÑOR y vuelvan todos los desterrados de Babilonia a este lugar.

7 Pero oye ahora esta palabra que voy a hablar a tus oídos y a oídos de todo el pueblo:

8 Los profetas que fueron antes de mí y antes de ti desde la antiguedad, profetizaron guerra, calamidad y pestilencia contra muchas tierras y contra grandes reinos.

9 Si un profeta profetiza paz, cuando la palabra del profeta se cumpla, entonces ese profeta será conocido como el que el SEÑOR en verdad ha enviado.

10 Entonces el profeta Hananías quitó el yugo del cuello del profeta Jeremías y lo rompió.

11 Y Hananías habló en presencia de todo el pueblo, diciendo: Así dice el SEÑOR: "De esta manera romperé el yugo de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, dentro de dos años, del cuello de todas las naciones." Y el profeta Jeremías se fue por su camino.

12 Entonces vino a Jeremías la palabra del SEÑOR, después que Hananías había roto el yugo del cuello del profeta Jeremías, diciendo:

13 Ve y habla a Hananías, diciendo: "Así dice el SEÑOR: 'Has roto yugos de madera, pero en su lugar harás yugos de hierro.'

14 "Porque así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: 'Yugo de hierro he puesto sobre el cuello de todas estas naciones, para que sirvan a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y le servirán. Y le he dado también las bestias del campo.'"

15 Y el profeta Jeremías dijo al profeta Hananías: Escucha ahora, Hananías, el SEÑOR no te ha enviado, y tú has hecho que este pueblo confíe en una mentira.

16 Por tanto, así dice el SEÑOR: "He aquí, te voy a quitar de sobre la faz de la tierra. Este año morirás, porque has aconsejado la rebelión contra el SEÑOR."

17 Y murió el profeta Hananías aquel mismo año, en el mes séptimo.

1 Later that same year (it was in the fifth month of King Zedekiah's fourth year) Hananiah son of Azzur, a prophet from Gibeon, confronted Jeremiah in the Temple of God in front of the priests and all the people who were there.

2 Hananiah said:

3 Before two years are out I'll have all the furnishings of God's Temple back here, all the things that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon plundered and hauled off to Babylon.

4 I'll also bring back Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and all the exiles who were taken off to Babylon.' God's Decree. 'Yes, I will break the king of Babylon's yoke. You'll no longer be in harness to him.'"

5 Prophet Jeremiah stood up to Prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people who were in God's Temple that day.

6 Prophet Jeremiah said, "Wonderful! Would that it were true - that God would validate your preaching by bringing the Temple furnishings and all the exiles back from Babylon.

7 But listen to me, listen closely. Listen to what I tell both you and all the people here today:

8 The old prophets, the ones before our time, preached judgment against many countries and kingdoms, warning of war and disaster and plague.

9 So any prophet who preaches that everything is just fine and there's nothing to worry about stands out like a sore thumb. We'll wait and see. If it happens, it happens - and then we'll know that God sent him."

10 At that, Hananiah grabbed the yoke from Jeremiah's shoulders and smashed it.

11 And then he addressed the people: "This is God's Message: In just this way I will smash the yoke of the king of Babylon and get him off the neck of all the nations - and within two years." Jeremiah walked out.

12 Later, sometime after Hananiah had smashed the yoke from off his shoulders, Jeremiah received this Message from God:

13 "Go back to Hananiah and tell him, 'This is God's Message: You smashed the wooden yoke-bars; now you've got iron yoke-bars.

14 This is a Message from God-of-the-Angel-Armies, Israel's own God: I've put an iron yoke on all these nations. They're harnessed to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. They'll do just what he tells them. Why, I'm even putting him in charge of the wild animals.'"

15 So prophet Jeremiah told prophet Hananiah, "Hold it, Hananiah! God never sent you. You've talked the whole country into believing a pack of lies!

16 And so God says, 'You claim to be sent? I'll send you all right - right off the face of the earth! Before the year is out, you'll be dead because you fomented sedition against God.'"

17 Prophet Hananiah died that very year, in the seventh month.
