1 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del SEÑOR, cuando Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y todo su ejército y todos los reinos de la tierra que estaban bajo su dominio y todos los pueblos peleaban contra Jerusalén y contra todas sus ciudades, diciendo:

2 Así dice el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: "Ve y habla a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y dile: 'Así dice el SEÑOR: "He aquí, yo entrego esta ciudad en manos del rey de Babilonia, y él le prenderá fuego.

3 "Y tú no escaparás de su mano, sino que ciertamente serás capturado y entregado en su mano; tus ojos verán los ojos del rey de Babilonia, y él te hablará cara a cara, y a Babilonia irás.'""

4 Sin embargo oye la palabra del SEÑOR, oh Sedequías, rey de Judá. Así dice el SEÑOR acerca de ti: "No morirás a espada;

5 en paz morirás. Como quemaron especias por tus padres, los reyes anteriores que te precedieron, así quemarán especias por ti, y con '¡Ay, Señor!' harán lamento por ti": Porque yo he hablado la palabradeclara el SEÑOR.

6 Entonces habló el profeta Jeremías a Sedequías, rey de Judá, todas estas palabras en Jerusalén

7 mientras el ejército del rey de Babilonia peleaba contra Jerusalén y contra todas las ciudades que quedaban en Judá, es decir, Laquis y Azeca, pues sólo éstas quedaban como ciudades fortificadas entre las ciudades de Judá.

8 Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte del SEÑOR, después que el rey Sedequías había hecho un pacto con todo el pueblo que había en Jerusalén para proclamarles libertad:

9 que cada uno debía poner en libertad a su siervo y a su sierva hebreos, para que nadie retuviera a un judío, hermano suyo, en servidumbre.

10 Y obedecieron todos los oficiales y todo el pueblo que habían entrado en el pacto, de que cada uno dejara en libertad a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, de modo que nadie los mantuviera más en servidumbre; obedecieron y los pusieron en libertad.

11 Pero después se arrepintieron y volvieron a tomar a los siervos y a las siervas a quienes habían dejado en libertad, y los redujeron a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas.

12 Entonces vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Jeremías, diciendo:

13 Así dice el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: "Yo hice un pacto con vuestros padres el día que los saqué de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre, diciendo:

14 'Al cabo de siete años cada uno de vosotros pondrá en libertad al hermano hebreo que le fue vendido y que le ha servido por seis años, y lo enviará libre de junto a sí; pero vuestros padres no me escucharon, ni inclinaron su oído.

15 'Aunque recientemente os habíais arrepentido y habíais hecho lo que es recto ante mis ojos, cada uno proclamando libertad a su prójimo, habiendo hecho un pacto delante de mí en la casa que es llamada por mi nombre,

16 ahora os habéis vuelto atrás y profanado mi nombre, y cada uno ha tomado de nuevo a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, a quienes habíais dejado libres según su deseo, y los habéis reducido a servidumbre como siervos y como siervas.'"

17 Por tanto, así dice el SEÑOR: "Vosotros no me habéis obedecido proclamando libertad cada uno a su hermano y cada uno a su prójimo. He aquí, proclamo contra vosotros libertad"declara el SEÑOR"a la espada, a la pestilencia y al hambre; y haré de vosotros motivo de espanto para todos los reinos de la tierra.

18 "Y entregaré a los hombres que han transgredido mi pacto, que no han cumplido las palabras del pacto que hicieron delante de mí, cuando cortaron en dos el becerro y pasaron entre los pedazos,

19 a los oficiales de Judá, a los oficiales de Jerusalén, a los oficiales de la corte, a los sacerdotes y a todo el pueblo de la tierra que pasaron entre los pedazos del becerro;

20 y los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos y en manos de los que buscan su vida. Sus cadáveres servirán de comida para las aves del cielo y para las bestias de la tierra.

21 "Y a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y a sus oficiales los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos, en manos de los que buscan su vida y en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, que se ha retirado de vosotros.

22 "He aquí, daré órdenes"declara el SEÑOR"y los haré volver a esta ciudad, y pelearán contra ella, la tomarán y le prenderán fuego; y haré de las ciudades de Judá una desolación sin habitantes."

1 God's Message to Jeremiah at the time King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon mounted an all-out attack on Jerusalem and all the towns around it with his armies and allies and everyone he could muster:

2 "I, God, the God of Israel, direct you to go and tell Zedekiah king of Judah: 'This is God's Message. Listen to me. I am going to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he is going to burn it to the ground.

3 And don't think you'll get away. You'll be captured and be his prisoner. You will have a personal confrontation with the king of Babylon and be taken off with him, captive, to Babylon.

4 "'But listen, O Zedekiah king of Judah, to the rest of the Message of God. You won't be killed.

5 You'll die a peaceful death. They will honor you with funeral rites as they honored your ancestors, the kings who preceded you. They will properly mourn your death, weeping, "Master, master!" This is a solemn promise. God's Decree.'"

6 The prophet Jeremiah gave this Message to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, gave it to him word for word.

7 It was at the very time that the king of Babylon was mounting his all-out attack on Jerusalem and whatever cities in Judah that were still standing - only Lachish and Azekah, as it turned out (they were the only fortified cities left in Judah).

8 God delivered a Message to Jeremiah after King Zedekiah made a covenant with the people of Jerusalem to decree freedom

9 to the slaves who were Hebrews, both men and women. The covenant stipulated that no one in Judah would own a fellow Jew as a slave.

10 All the leaders and people who had signed the covenant set free the slaves, men and women alike.

11 But a little while later, they reneged on the covenant, broke their promise and forced their former slaves to become slaves again.

12 Then Jeremiah received this Message from God:

13 "God, the God of Israel, says, 'I made a covenant with your ancestors when I delivered them out of their slavery in Egypt. At the time I made it clear:

14 "At the end of seven years, each of you must free any fellow Hebrew who has had to sell himself to you. After he has served six years, set him free." But your ancestors totally ignored me.

15 "'And now, you - what have you done? First you turned back to the right way and did the right thing, decreeing freedom for your brothers and sisters - and you made it official in a solemn covenant in my Temple.

16 And then you turned right around and broke your word, making a mockery of both me and the covenant, and made them all slaves again, these men and women you'd just set free. You forced them back into slavery.

17 "'So here is what I, God, have to say: You have not obeyed me and set your brothers and sisters free. Here is what I'm going to do: I'm going to set you free - God's Decree - free to get killed in war or by disease or by starvation. I'll make you a spectacle of horror. People all over the world will take one look at you and shudder.

18 Everyone who violated my covenant, who didn't do what was solemnly promised in the covenant ceremony when they split the young bull into two halves and walked between them,

19 all those people that day who walked between the two halves of the bull - leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, palace officials, priests, and all the rest of the people -

20 I'm handing the lot of them over to their enemies who are out to kill them. Their dead bodies will be carrion food for vultures and stray dogs.

21 "'As for Zedekiah king of Judah and his palace staff, I'll also hand them over to their enemies, who are out to kill them. The army of the king of Babylon has pulled back for a time,

22 but not for long, for I'm going to issue orders that will bring them back to this city. They'll attack and take it and burn it to the ground. The surrounding cities of Judah will fare no better. I'll turn them into ghost towns, unlivable and unlived in.'" God's Decree.
