1 «¡Oh, Israel! —dice el Señor—,<br />si quisieras, podrías volver a mí.<br />Podrías desechar tus ídolos detestables<br />y no alejarte nunca más.

2 Después, cuando jures por mi nombre diciendo:<br />“Tan cierto como que el Señor<br /> vive”,<br />lo podrías hacer<br />con verdad, justicia y rectitud.<br />Entonces serías una bendición a las naciones del mundo,<br />y todos los pueblos vendrían y alabarían mi nombre».

3 Se acerca el juicio a Judá<br />Esto dice el Señor<br /> a la gente de Judá y de Jerusalén:<br />«¡Pasen el arado por el terreno endurecido de sus corazones!<br />No desperdicien la buena semilla entre los espinos.

4 Oh habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén,<br />renuncien a su orgullo y a su poder.<br />Cambien la actitud del corazón ante el Señor<br />,<br />o mi enojo arderá como fuego insaciable<br />debido a todos sus pecados.

5 »¡Griten a la gente de Judá y proclamen a los de Jerusalén!<br />Díganles que toquen alarma en toda la tierra:<br />“¡Corran y salven sus vidas!<br />¡Huyan a las ciudades fortificadas!”.

6 Levanten una bandera de señales como una advertencia para Jerusalén:<br />“¡Huyan de inmediato! ¡No se demoren!”.<br />Pues desde el norte traigo una<br />terrible destrucción sobre ustedes».

7 Desde su guarida un león acecha,<br />un destructor de naciones.<br />Ha salido de su guarida y se dirige hacia ustedes.<br />¡Arrasará su tierra!<br />Sus ciudades quedarán en ruinas,<br />y ya nadie vivirá en ellas.

8 Así que póngase ropa de luto<br />y lloren con el corazón destrozado,<br />porque la ira feroz del Señor<br />todavía está sobre nosotros.

9 «En aquel día —dice el Señor<br />—,<br />el rey y los funcionarios temblarán de miedo.<br />Los sacerdotes quedarán paralizados de terror<br />y los profetas, horrorizados».

10 Entonces dije: «Oh Señor<br /> Soberano,<br />el pueblo ha sido engañado por lo que dijiste,<br />porque prometiste paz para Jerusalén.<br />¡Sin embargo, la espada está en su cuello!».

11 Se acerca la hora en que el Señor<br /> dirá<br />a la gente de Jerusalén:<br />«Mi querido pueblo, desde el desierto sopla un viento abrasador,<br />y no la brisa suave que se usa para separar la paja del grano.

12 ¡Es una ráfaga estrepitosa que yo envié!<br />¡Ahora pronuncio la destrucción contra ti!».

13 ¡Nuestro enemigo avanza hacia nosotros como nubarrones!<br />Sus carros de guerra son como torbellinos;<br />sus caballos son más veloces que las águilas.<br />¡Qué horrible será, pues estamos condenados!

14 Oh Jerusalén, limpia tu corazón<br />para que seas salvada.<br />¿Hasta cuándo guardarás<br />tus malos pensamientos?

15 Tu destrucción ya se anunció<br />desde Dan y la zona montañosa de Efraín.

16 «Adviertan a las naciones vecinas<br />y anuncien esto a Jerusalén:<br />“El enemigo viene desde una tierra lejana,<br />dando gritos de guerra contra las ciudades de Judá.

17 Rodean a Jerusalén como guardianes alrededor de un campo<br />porque mi pueblo se rebeló contra mí<br />—dice el Señor<br />—.

18 Tus propios hechos han traído todo esto sobre ti.<br />Este castigo es amargo, ¡te penetra hasta el corazón!”».

19 Jeremías llora por su pueblo<br />¡Mi corazón, mi corazón, me retuerzo de dolor!<br />¡Mi corazón retumba dentro de mí! No puedo quedarme quieto.<br />Pues he escuchado el sonar de las trompetas enemigas<br />y el bramido de sus gritos de guerra.

20 Olas de destrucción cubren la tierra,<br />hasta dejarla en completa desolación.<br />Súbitamente mis carpas son destruidas;<br />de repente mis refugios son demolidos.

21 ¿Hasta cuándo tendré que ver las banderas de combate<br />y oír el toque de trompetas de guerra?

22 «Mi pueblo es necio<br />y no me conoce —dice el Señor<br />—.<br />Son hijos tontos,<br />sin entendimiento.<br />Son lo suficientemente listos para hacer lo malo,<br />¡pero no tienen ni idea de cómo hacer lo correcto!».

23 Visión de Jeremías del desastre venidero<br />Miré a la tierra y estaba vacía y no tenía forma;<br />miré a los cielos y no había luz.

24 Miré a las montañas y colinas<br />que temblaban y se agitaban.

25 Miré y toda la gente se había ido;<br />todos los pájaros del cielo se habían volado.

26 Miré y los terrenos fértiles se habían convertido en desiertos;<br />las ciudades estaban en ruinas,<br />destruidas por la ira feroz del Señor<br />.

27 Esto dice el Señor<br />:<br />«La tierra entera será arrasada,<br />pero no la destruiré por completo.

28 La tierra estará de luto<br />y los cielos serán tapizados de negro<br />a causa de la sentencia que pronuncié contra mi pueblo.<br />Lo he decidido y no lo cambiaré».

29 Al oír el ruido de los carros de guerra y los arqueros,<br />la gente huye aterrorizada.<br />Ellos se esconden en los matorrales<br />y corren a las montañas.<br />Todas las ciudades han sido abandonadas,<br />¡no queda nadie en ellas!

30 ¿Qué es lo que haces,<br />tú que has sido saqueado?<br />¿Por qué te vistes de ropas hermosas<br />y te pones joyas de oro?<br />¿Por qué te resaltas los ojos con rímel?<br />¡Arreglarte así de nada te servirá!<br />Los aliados que fueron tus amantes<br />te desprecian y buscan tu muerte.

31 Oigo gritos, como los de una mujer que está de parto,<br />los gemidos de una mujer dando a luz a su primer hijo.<br />Es la bella Jerusalén,<br />que respira con dificultad y grita:<br />«¡Socorro! ¡Me están matando!».

1 “If you, Israel, will return, then return to me,” declares the LORD. “If you put your detestable idols out of my sight and no longer go astray,

2 and if in a truthful, just and righteous way you swear, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ then the nations will invoke blessings by him and in him they will boast.”

3 This is what the LORD says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem: “Break up your unplowed ground and do not sow among thorns.

4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, circumcise your hearts, you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire because of the evil you have done— burn with no one to quench it.

5 “Announce in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say: ‘Sound the trumpet throughout the land!’ Cry aloud and say: ‘Gather together! Let us flee to the fortified cities!’

6 Raise the signal to go to Zion! Flee for safety without delay! For I am bringing disaster from the north, even terrible destruction.”

7 A lion has come out of his lair; a destroyer of nations has set out. He has left his place to lay waste your land. Your towns will lie in ruins without inhabitant.

8 So put on sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of the LORDhas not turned away from us.

9 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “the king and the officials will lose heart, the priests will be horrified, and the prophets will be appalled.”

10 Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign LORD! How completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’ when the sword is at our throats!”

11 At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse;

12 a wind too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments against them.”

13 Look! He advances like the clouds, his chariots come like a whirlwind, his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! We are ruined!

14 Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart and be saved. How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?

15 A voice is announcing from Dan, proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.

16 “Tell this to the nations, proclaim concerning Jerusalem: ‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land, raising a war cry against the cities of Judah.

17 They surround her like men guarding a field, because she has rebelled against me,’ ” declares the LORD.

18 “Your own conduct and actions have brought this on you. This is your punishment. How bitter it is! How it pierces to the heart!”

19 Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart! My heart pounds within me, I cannot keep silent. For I have heard the sound of the trumpet; I have heard the battle cry.

20 Disaster follows disaster; the whole land lies in ruins. In an instant my tents are destroyed, my shelter in a moment.

21 How long must I see the battle standard and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 “My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.”

23 I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty; and at the heavens, and their light was gone.

24 I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking; all the hills were swaying.

25 I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.

26 I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert; all its towns lay in ruins before the LORD, before his fierce anger.

27 This is what the LORD says: “The whole land will be ruined, though I will not destroy it completely.

28 Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above grow dark, because I have spoken and will not relent, I have decided and will not turn back.”

29 At the sound of horsemen and archers every town takes to flight. Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks. All the towns are deserted; no one lives in them.

30 What are you doing, you devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels of gold? Why highlight your eyes with makeup? You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers despise you; they want to kill you.

31 I hear a cry as of a woman in labor, a groan as of one bearing her first child— the cry of Daughter Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands and saying, “Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers.”
